Danube River, Ruse Province, Bulgaria

Vibrant part of town

Park "Keya" (meaning a pier in Bulgarian) along the Danube River is a vibrant part of Ruse. Children's playgrounds, a couple of cafes, manicured gardens but not too many trees to protect you from the sunshine are there in the park which clearly has been well taken care of recently. It is a perfect place for a relaxing stroll in the early summer evening to watch the sunset and the passing-by river ships and barges. A number of very good restaurants are up on the boulevard above the park.

    Strolling along the Danube
Ruse is a pleasant city to walk around: open, structured and it breathes a good atmosphere. Part of this is related to the ability of walking along the Danube. There are lots of open spaces and plenty benches to sit down and oversee the river and overthink life.

    Walk from Ruse to Romania
Ruse is Bulgaria's biggest town on the Danube with its main port just East from the city. An important bridge (for trains and trucks) crosses the Danube to Romania. It is possible to walk all the way along the Danube on an old disused quay to the bridge. Only the last part of this route leads through a post-communist industrial area. I continued on foot along a narrow foot path over the bridge to Giurgiu on the other side where I took a bus to Bucharest (one hour, 16 Lei), but it is also possible to return from the bridge area to Ruse with a local bus (green marshrutka) that goes regularly. To the middle of the bridge is 8 km from Ruse center. To Giurgiu bus station is 14 km. Take your passport with you as there is border control.
