A great short visit on our way back home from Velingrad. The park is really small for now and I do hope it gets bigger in the years to come. The mammoth is amazing and really impressive. There are some pretty nice fossils especially one gigantic mammoth tusk. And one of the guys there was really talkative and told us all about how the bones came to be there and some pretty interesting stuff about the animals. See more..

It's not a commercial tour so you will want to call in advance or book through traventuria.com (they offer day tour from Sofia to Plovdiv to see the city and visit bessa and tordoff wineries). At bessa we met the winemaker who walked us through the process and then sampled the wine with us. They offered mainly French style Cabernets and Merlots of French. Their wines were featured on Lufthansa business class flights. These are fantastic wines that taste like they should cost much more then they do. The experiences was wonderful as well and they let us take home the open bottles from the tasting as well. I strongly recommend seeing the wineries if you are in the Plovdiv area or take the Plovdiv/wine tour from Sofia with traventuria. See more..

There is a real hiking path, so it is good to have tracking shoes. When you finally get up to the hill, you will not enjoy only the remains of the castle, but also an amazing view. It is awesome! We visited one of the closer thracian sanctuaries and it was an amazing experience. It was just the right amount of extremeness for an off-road trip. The hosts had also prepared an absolutely delicious home-made tea for when we reached the destination. We saw breathtaking views and had lots of fun. Experience the romantic "time travel" back to the 20-th century by taking a trip on the last operational narrow gauge line in Bulgaria with the rare track gauge of 760mm: the line Septemvri - Dobrinishte! The route has a total length of 124,7 km. It connects the Gornotrakiyska Valley with the Rhodope, Rila and Pirin Mountains. On its way it passes through the gorge of Chepinska river, stops at the SPA-Capital Velingrad and heads towards the Avramovo Saddle, which divides Rila and the Rhodopes. This is where the highest railway station on the Balkan Peninsula lies - Station Avramovo, at 1267 m above sea level. The line then follows the river Mesta until it reaches the Razlog Valley, at the foot of the Pirin Mountain, where it stops at Bansko and finally arrives at its final station Dobrinishte. interesting exhibition that demonstrate the living in bulgaria in the past- costumes, working tools, rooms decorations etc. have special rooms with exhibition of decorated eggs. There is a spectacular display and explaination of the technique of coloring eggs. We were there on Thursday, so the entress was free. There is also a workshop where you can experiment with dyeing eggs. You can also but souvenirs at cheap prices (very unlike museums in the world). No English signs, so go with your Google Translate app. The guy in charge also spoke no English, but he happily chatted to us in Bulgarian, and whilst we didn’t understand a word, his enthusiasm shone through and we really liked him. The cave is the first that has been opened to tourist in the beginning of 20th century. It is not the greatest one in Bulgaria, but certainly among the few unique, where you have to enter with special equipment and guide. It has some parts where you have to crawl and some tine places that makes going through this cave really unique experience. I was with 2 girls 10 and 12 and they enjoyed it also very much To get there you can by car from Rakitovo - 17 km drive, from Velingrad you can get even walking, just few killometers NOTE: This experience is not recommended for people who cannot stand small places, just do not go there ... Amazing place, full of history. In this small house with the small garden you can feel like your really touched the history, with all parts of your body. There is so much to learn, I had the feeling even the walls wanna talk and explain to the visitors. I was 2 days in the city and bith of the days I went to this place. The lake is a beautiful tourist site, a must see. However, the restaurant situated right by it is ridiculous! Dirty plates, dirty silverware, had to ask for clean ones. The staff was way too talkative and untrained. The food was alright, but then the BILL... we were way overcharged. Had to call for the manager, unpleasant situation. Will not recommended visiting it. Der gesamte Park vorallem die Gehwege rund um die Seen ist leider in einem unhaltbaren schmutzigen und Unterhalt vernachlässigten Zustand. Ungepflegte Anlage mit Müll wohin das Auge reicht.
