Top places to visit (27 attractions)

  1. 5.0 Belogradchik Rocks (94 reviews)
    - A lovely view from the fortress
Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Geologic Formations
    Belogradchik Rocks image
The rock formation definitely makes the already excellent experience in the fortress that little bit better. The signposts throughout give you the names of the formations and what they are supposed to represent, with our tour guide giving us the stories behind them, pretty much all of them involve someone or something falling for a beautiful woman. All part of your ridiculously low entry fee of the fortress. See more..
  2. 5.0 St. Panteleimon Church (11 reviews)
    - Superb Old Church
Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    St. Panteleimon Church image
If you find yourself in the tired and dilapidated town of Vidin, make St Panteleimon Church the place you visit. Sadly there was no guide the day we were there (other reviewers noted one). But if you know your Bible, you can easily "read" the frescoes and icons. While in good condition, we can easily imagine how bright and colorful the frescoes would be if the centuries of incense smoke were removed. This was the highlight of Vidin. Sorry we couldn't take pictures indoors, but we wanted to respect their wishes. See more..

Exciting experience, wonderful memories. It was our first flight with hot air balloon. Evitim, the pilot, and his team did an excellent job. The stones are beautiful. The agency's staff very nice and helpful. Thank you for this amazing experience! See more..
  4. 5.0 Shisha Lounge & Bar Luas (1 review)

  5. 4.5 Belogradchik Fortress (312 reviews)
    - Stunning castle with great views
Historic Sites • Historic Walking Areas
    Belogradchik Fortress image
Our Multi Travel Bulgaria tours first stop from Sofia was to the spectacular Belogradchik Fortress. The approach gives off real Game of Thrones/Lord of the Rings vibes, with its turrets and gate leading to the impressive rock formations within the castle. Within the castle some of the climbs could be a little hard if you aren't fully mobile, but are certainly worth the effort. If you get some good weather like we did in late May it certainly adds to the visit as you can see into both Serbia and Romania. A word of warning as our guide said to make sure we had our passports with us as border patrol often stop people around this area. The entry fee is under £3.00 which in itself is just insane. It is three hours from Sofia but well worth the trip if staying for more than a couple of nights See more..
  6. 4.5 Venetsa Cave (13 reviews)
    - Nice experience, don't trust the GPS
    Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Caverns & Caves
    Venetsa Cave image
Don't believe the GPS. Go to Belogradčik and then before entering the city turn left (if you're coming from Vidin), for Oreshets. If you are not on an asphalt road turn back because it's the wrong road. You have a nice parking to park and then a 5min walk to the entrance. Tours are every hour and last around 30, 45 minutes. The cave is nice and would look beautiful with white lights. The colored lights are nice on picture but actually hide all the beauty. Anyway I recommend the visit See more..
  7. 4.5 Vidin Drama Theatre (5 reviews)

    Architectural Buildings
    Vidin Drama Theatre image

  10. 4.0 Baba Vida Fortress (169 reviews)
    - The most preserved historical site in my view
    Speciality Museums
    Baba Vida Fortress image
Baba Vida is gracefully situated on the bench of the Danube river. It is surprisingly well preserved (or better to say, reconstructed), with a few installations in some of the first "cells" following the entrance. It has a spectacular view over the river and with its summer theater represents a great place for events - weddings for example. In my view it is much nicer than Tzarevetz. See more..
  11. 4.0 The Magura Cave (81 reviews)
    - Combines cave stone formations with prehistoric paintings
    Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM Spent 2-3 hours Caverns & Caves
    The Magura Cave image
If seeing the 10,000 year old cave art up close and in-person get you going, this is a great place. No English spoken here (beyond a couple of brochures), so read ahead and by all means get a guidebook. This cave is improved (stairs, lights, etc) and can be seen only with guided groups. And if you don't speak Bulgarian, the guide is merely setting the pace. Despite signs cameras were tolerated in the caves, resulting in a unique experience. Be prepared for plenty of stairs and some slippery spots. The lighting can use some improvement (blinding in spots and missing in others), but everyone in our party enjoyed the experience. Cave exit is about a 1K walk to the entrance parking lot, so there's a little more walking left when you finish. See more..
  12. 4.0 Memorial of Victims in Serbo-Bulgarian War (18 reviews)
    - A unique memorial that does not glorify the winners but expresses grief and sadness
    Monuments & Statues
Memorial of Victims in Serbo-Bulgarian War image
The most famous Bulgarian sculptor Andrey Nikolov created a unique monument. It is dedicated to the victims in the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885. An English journalist who visited Vidin, wrote in this connection: "Bulgaria has a monument of victory like no other in Europe. The dying grenadier, despite being a winner, is plunged into grief. Bulgarians are only capable of such attitude.” See more..
  13. 4.0 St. Dimitar Cathedral (17 reviews)
    - Interesting visit on a Saturday afternoon
    Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
    St. Dimitar Cathedral image
Vidin is an important religious centre. The proof for that statement is St. Dimitar - the second biggest church in Bulgaria after St. Alexander Nevski in Sofia. The dome is 33 meteres high. Absolute beauty and must-see. See more..
  14. 4.0 Dzhamiya and Library (14 reviews)
    - Mosque and Library
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites • Educational sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    Dzhamiya and Library image
The Mosque is open for visit. The only musk in Bulgaria and in Balkan Peninsula (may be in the world) that do not have a crescent on the top of the minaret and library but heart. It was built by Osman Pazvantoglu in memory of his parents. His mother has been high educated for those times and the Library beside the Mosque is in her memory. It contained a lot of books for household's economy, geography, history, literature in French, German, English, Bulgarian. The remains of the library were kept: partin National Library of Bulgaria, and the another part in Turkey. See more..

  19. 4.0 Epigraphic Centre and Lapidarium (3 reviews)
    - An interesting and equational collection of Roman carved stonework in Vidin.
Spent < 1 hour Speciality Museums
This was an interesting and educational collection of Roman carved stonework and also later times in history. If you're in the area it's worth a visit, but it's not necessarily worth a trip on its own. At the time we visited there was no one there to answer questions and the door was open wide. See more..
  20. 3.5 Vidin Synagogue (65 reviews)
    - So sad to see
    Religious Sites
    Vidin Synagogue image
On our Viking River Cruise we stopped in Vidin and walked the town. The Vidin Synagogue is so sad to see. The chain link fence was down so we respectfully ventured in to see the interior. One can imagine worshipers praying & coming together as a faith community. Though we’re Christian we feel the loss of this house of worship - shalom. See more..
