Lots to See in the Historical Center

I highly recommend a walk through the historical center. Pick up a map at the tourist information office on Alba Iulia Street. Then visit as many sights as you can. Alba Iulia Street has an installation of umbrellas overhead. The walls of the houses are part of the old fortifications. Be sure to visit Union Square, Liberty Square, and Victory Square.

Historical past of this city revealed through the architecture of this square
Communism destroyed a lot of the city's monuments, the beautiful edifices of this square were left for decay. Lucky Timisoara will be European Cultural capital 2021 and is making efforts to show itself from its best side. Visiting in the later half of 2020 will have you encounter more construction sites and buildings under renovation than you probably fancy. Just a warning. The square features a mix of architectural styles, the Hapsburg era being the most prevalent. Even if not in need of medication pay a visit to the only pharmacy in the square, it still has all original apothecary interior. The Serbian episcopacy and St. George's cathedral are testimony of the peaceful melting pot that this part of Romania has always been. Don't miss. The bars and restaurants will provide a lovely break and chance to people watch.

Historical Center ? indeed and definitely more than meets the eye at first.
The Historical center of Timisoara .., it is a very big area in the city center so here are some points of interest: - Victoriei Square with its palaces on 2 sides (the Orthodox Cathedral is recent built between 1936 and 1941 .... so not even 100 years old , it is interesting is big but it ain't old.... ). - You walk on Alba Iulia street to the Libertatii Square - use to the the Parade square with the Fortress commandment building and the officers casino. Also the old City Hall is situated here and in the center you will find the monument of the Virgin Mary and John Nepomuk. - From here you can move to the St. George square - a small place loaded with history - in the 15 hundreds a turkish mosque was standing here - than after 1716 it got demolished and a iezuit church got built there (the church got demolished in the 19 hundreds - so today is just a square with beautiful palaces surrounding ) . Also in the square you shall find a plaque marking the house that was the birthplace of Georg (Gorgy ) Klapka - General in the hungarian army during the revolution of 1848-1849, he was not executed in Arad as the 13 Martyrs. - getting to Unirii square is just a few steps - beautiful place with palaces and churches - the moorish style Synagogue also in walking distance. - and finally walk down the Eugene of Savoy street to the Theresia Bastion for a look at the last - almost complete bastion of the once mighty Timisoara Fortress. And these are a few things - go and check out what other treasures you can find. So , for those of you who are interested in history - for sure you will have a lot interesting landmarks to discover - for those of you into arts and architecture likewise. Given all of the above I would say - a very good experience - go and walk around the historical center it is worth it.
