A must if you are in Maramures!

This complex of wooden churches and buildings is an amazing place of peace and serenity. The main church is 57 m high and it was built recently between 1993-1995. We have visited the complex during sunset and we were blown away by the beauty of the place. This complex should be put on the itinerary of every traveller that visits Maramures. It is a UNESCO Heritage Site and it has plenty of facilities from souvenir shop to kiosks selling the local pie and refreshing drinks. There is even an ATM of BRD near the parking area. There is no entrance fee for touring the complex.

    Peaceful monastery inviting contemplation
Bârsana Monastery is a beautifully sited monastery complex built of carved wood. The original monastery and church was built in 1391, but was burned in 1717 during the Tatar invasion. The church and monastery were replaced in 1720, on nearby Jbar Hill, used as a cemetery for the plague victims. The monastery was abolished in 1791, but the church and abbey continued to serve the community. The old church was moved to its present location in 1806. A new church (dedicated to the 12 Apostles) was completed in 1995, on the eastern side of the monastery complex. Other buildings include the summer altar, Aghiasmatarul, priory, nuns’ house, confessor’s house, belfry and a museum. Buildings are typical of wooden country churches in the Maramureş area, with steeply sloped roof (to shed snow), tall triangular spire covering the bell tower, and stout oak walls. The new church has a veranda (reached by two stairs), narthex (vestibule), nave, and altar, all carved from wood. A small museum has icons and artifacts from the nunnery dating back to the 16th century, and a gift shop with hand-made items. Ten nuns and and abbot live at the monastery, which is a popular pilgrimage site. As I wandered along the paved paths winding between flower beds and buildings, I was struck by the peace and harmony of the place which invited contemplation. The monastery is open daily; there are church services at 10.45am on Sundays.

    Finding your peace
This place is one of that you must view if you are in the area of Maramures. A great place with few objectives in a large and beautiful courtyard. The church inside of monastery is not the old one, the original you will find in the village Barsana not far away from this area. That church is UNESCO monument and you must to see it also. The new one from here is built since 1993. In the museum of monastery you will see great icons who belonged of the old monastery, but also other beautiful things which are connected with the customs and life from Maramures. Everything in this courtyard is very well preserved and beautiful for the eye of who come here. A moment of peace you will find inside the church.
