This is one of the nearest glacier lake that we could see in person. We went there by car from Vidraru lake and no problem passing through the way where we saw some bears. Was a little crowded even on weekday, from our point of view, can't imagine on peak season weekend. There are plenty of free parking near the highway down the road. Not necessary packed between the hotels or parking lots. We stayed a night in the cabana on the lake and continued our one day hiking the next day to Capra lake. The restaurant at the hotel is super expensive and I recommend you to have some barbecue at the square. Try the baked polenta with sheep cheese, that was wrapped in aluminium foil.

Beautiful nature
Had such a wonderful time there. Highly recommend ?. If you are on this road you should not miss it. There are several hiking routes around,I was lacking out of time unfortunately could make it. Thinking about getting back!!!

The Lake Balea ... situated in the Fagaras mountains - near the Transfagarasan road , it is definitely one of those spots where you shall stop for 1-2 hours and enjoy the beauty of nature. This time - we got bad luck - in the day we went to the Balea Lake it was a cloud that stopped between the mountains , so the visibility was poor - as can e be seen in the pics. On a sunny day it is spectacular to see the lake - this time it wasn't the best experience. Stopping near the lake is in a payed parking, like 10 Ron/day ... so not that bad. The lake is situate at above 2000 m altitude , it is formed due to the melting of a glacier, the water are cold even in the summer , bathing is not recommended ... for those who have a passion for angling , once they got the paper work sorted out they can try to catch trout ... In the summer either from direction of Curtea de Arges , either from the direction of Sibiu you can drive to the lake - in the winter you can take the cable car from the Sibiu side of the Fagaras mountains , from the Cabana Balea Cascada point. Driving the Transfagarasan is forbidden and the road closed passed this point. A great place - definitely worth seeing - either in the winter either in the summer ... So if you are in the area don't miss this place.
