A well-deserved 1st place in the top preferences of tourists

This ensemble of buildings is one of the monumental architectural works in Oradea and Transylvania, typical for the secession style. The architects Komor Marcell and Jakab Dezső won the contest for the construction of this complex. Two Jewish lawyers, Dr. Kurlander Ede and Dr. Emil Adorjan, decided to finance, using their own resources, the construction of a noteworthy building in Oradea. The work started in 1907, under the supervision of the civil engineer Sztarill Ferenc, and in December 1908 the building was completed. Consisting of two unequal and asymmetrical buildings, connected to a third one, placed in the middle and more isolated, the complex housed a theatre, ballrooms, a casino and offices. The Y-shaped gallery (passage) has three entrances. The Vittorio Emanuele Gallery in Milan inspired the glass-covered interior. The gallery or the Passage, as the local people know it, concentrates the most popular bars, coffee houses and pubs in the city, being the entertainment high spot of the city.

    Extraordinary architecture !
The Black Eagle Palace is the most spectacular secession style architectural achievement in Oradea and Transylvania. The palace’s passageway is open to visitors. Situated across three streets, it is the main attraction point for tourists, but also locals. The palace is located in the union square in Oradea, km 0 of the city. There are other important tourist attractions in the same square . A must see !

    Enter and Look up
The old “arcade” as it is called is a covered pedestrian stroll among a few buildings. Enter beneath the beautiful stained glass awning off of Piata Unirii by the tramvai/streetcar stop. As you go straight ahead you will see some black and white posters of renovations over many years. LOOK UP! The ceiling in that area is stunning and worth a visit for that alone. Many shops and bars are vacant thanks to the pandemic, but stroll along and see what you find. One souvenir shop was excellent with beautiful handmade arts and crafts like painted wooden spoons. Exit onto the side street where restaurants abound.
