Originally built in 1685, this is one of the oldest wooden churches in Finland. The altar painting is from 1739. I had never seen anything like it! On a nice summer day, the smell of tar reinforced the historical feel. The old church is well signposted from the "new" church (built in 1859) and definitely worth a visit.See more..

Beautiful little church in the woods at Nellim. We visited during a snowmobile safari from Nellim Wilderness Hotel, but we also walked there from the hotel separately beforehand after a fellow guest said it was a lovely spot to walk to. Perhaps we struck lucky when we visited as part of the snowmobile trip, or maybe it was part of the arrangement, but it was open that time, with a local lady looking after it, so we got to see the inside. Enontekio Church is one of the most beautiful modern churches in Finland. It's located in the centre of Hetta village. Architect Veikko Larkas designed the present church and it was built in 1952 with help of American Lutherans. The mural on the wall behind the altar was designed by the artist Uuno Eskola. This Lapland themed mosaic work manifests the resurrected Christ blessing the people of Lapland and their daily life.See more..
we saw this while out on a snow mobile ride. Its a beautiful old building, well maintained & obviously well loved by the locals with many people using it to get married in, even in summer despite guests having a lengthy journey to get there by foot. Tervolan udempi kirkko oli suljettuna mutta vanhassa kirkossa olivat ovet auki. Siinä on aitoa vanhan ajan henkeä. Jopa puuistuimissa oli pienet takapuolipainumat näkyvillä, kun vuosisatoja suunnilleen samoilla paikoilla istuttu! Kannattaa poiketa. Mitään esittelyä ei nyt sattunut olemaan, se avaisi varmaan paikkaa vielä aivan eri tavalla.See more..

Vi stannade till i Kemijärvi och gick in i deras kyrka. Den var egentligen stängd just då men några vänliga damer öppnade så vi kunde gå in och titta. Ganska lite utsmyckat där det vackraste var altartavlan. I övrigt inte så mycket att se men heder till damerna som hade vänligheten att öppna kyrkan.See more..
