Wonderful winter wonderland, really unspoilt, lots of skiing, and winter sports tied to local cultures. Friendly populace, English spoken everywhere, mountain was safe if cold at -20C. Sirkka village is at the foot of the ski slopes and walkable end to end in 20 minutes but bustles regardless. Taxis readily available to the local Elf village and we even met Father Christmas despite being early January. And in its white coat and twilight the countryside is breathtakingly beautiful and eerie. Lots to do, slightly expensive for UK travellers but less so if you were from Switzerland. We’ve had a great time just doing the usual tourist trail, night horse ride, skidoos, snow shoeing, etc. but we’d come back for the skiing. See more..

As the second biggest National Park in Finland this park offers peace and tranquility just few steps from the center of Saariselkä village. You have easy walking routes coming to the border and then short and longer snowshoeing trail. Short one you can do on any weather but the longer one takes you up on the fjell so you don't want to take that in a bad weather. Skiing tracks are going more deeply inside the park. At the summer hiking routes are going everywhere. See more..

I hadnt skied for 20 years and was a bit apprehensive. However from the rental shop to the lift passes, the uplift, the pistes and the great cafes it was brilliant. Excellent quaility skis and boots. The t bar tows, which I remembered from at home could take the legs from under you, were smooth and easy. Sadly it was too windy for the gondola so can’t comment. Even better no massive queues and no jostling for places! Beautifully groomed pistes and excellent cafes for a much needed hot chocolate and a “Munkii”. (Wrong spelling but a delicious enormous doughring). Highly recommend, great for families. We were with a Finnish family who were introducing their tinies to downhill skiing and it was perfect. 7. 4.5 Ounasvaaran Hiihtokeskus Oy (103 reviews)
    - First time skiing
Monday: 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM Ski & Snowboard Areas
    Ounasvaaran Hiihtokeskus Oy image
Our first time skiing and it couldn’t have went better. Ounasvaara were so accommodating, our package, time and date was booked easily via email. We booked the “easy 45” package for €99 each. This included ski lessons for 45 mins, ski equipment and our ski pass for the full day. The instructor, Sanna, was lovely, went above and beyond for us even helping us put on equipment. My 7 year was nervous and apprehensive about coming but Sanna instantly put her at ease, she helped her up the “magic carpet” and took the time to help her and guide her, by the end of the lesson my 7 year old was going up and coming down independently. Sanna also made sure to use our names which I felt was an extremely approachable way of teaching, some wouldn’t bother asking names of a group of 4 never mind remember them. She was fantastic and made our first ski experience doable and enjoyable. Slopes were well managed and we had no issues at all during our stay. See more..
