If you're looking for a beautiful and peaceful destination for kayaking/boating/fishing in Lapland look no further. There are over 3000 islands in this huge lake and most of them are totally uninhabited. There are many free well equipped camping areas to choose from. You can sleep in the wilderness cabins but it's better to have you own tent too. The lake is also great for fishing and with some effort it is possible to eat fresh fish every night. There's also a cool ice cave on the island called "Korkia Maura". The icy floor of the cave has been frozen for over 500 years. This cave alone is a sight worth visiting. Just remember that this lake can turn it's beautiful mirror surface into a sea of rough dwelling waves in no time. See more..
  2. 4.5 Pakasaivo (14 reviews)
    - Concentrated Sami Culture.

    Pakasaivo image
Reindeers, gravel roads through forests and swamps of Lapponia. Pakasaivo is a Sami sacred sinkhole, passage to the land of Saivo-people, the dead, who walk under the bottom of the lake upside down. And a deep, deep lake it is. Under the surface some 13 metres down, water turns anaerobic due to hydrogen sulphide. The water in lake preserves all that sinks to the bottom 60 metres under the surface. Very clear water. Some horseflies and mosquitoes. Easier to reach during summer. See more..

We stopped at the Kukkolankoski rapids to admire the view and the work of the traditional fishermen (dip netting), and enjoyed a cup of coffee and pastries at the cafe by the rapids. Sweden could be seen just across the river. At 3.5 km long (and 14 m drop), the rapids are the largest in Finland, and the area is recognised as a significant cultural heritage site. See more..

One of the biggest rivers in Finland, the Ounasjoki River starts its journey from Enontekio. The Ounasjoki is an ancient thoroughfare of Lapland and it continues its journey through Lapland, all the way to Rovaniemi. You can explore the river by canoeing or rowing or you can just relax and try to catch a salmon! The river takes you on an adventure into the untouched nature and to the little villages along the riverbank. See more..
