Monroe Lake is part of the Indiana State Parks system. It covers 23,952-acres, including a 10,750-acre lake (the largest in Indiana and known for bass fishing) with both open and no-wake areas. The property includes 9 State Recreation Areas (Paynetown, Fairfax, Cutright, Moore's Creek, Salt Creek, Pinegrove, Allen's Creek, Crooked Creek, and Cartop) and 3 Wildlife Resting Areas (Stillwater-Northfork, Middlefork, and Southfork). Facilities vary at each location. The two most-developed sites are Paynetown SRA (campground, swimming beach, marina, general store, activity center, and other amenities) and Fairfax SRA (hotel resort, restaurants, marina, swimming beach, and other amenities). There is a seasonal entrance fee to enter Paynetown and Fairfax ($5/vehicle for Indiana residents, $7/vehicle for out-of-state residents). Refer to our website or call the Property Office for specifics about amenities available at each of the 9 SRAs. Hunting is allowed in all non-developed areas of the property, with special restrictions in the Wildlife Resting Areas. Call the Property Office for information about hunter access.See more..
4.0Brookville Lake(66 reviews) - Biking the Scenic Trail at Mounds State Recreation Bodies of Water
I road my bike on the Scenic Trail. It is an abandon road that is now used for hiking and biking. It was in great shape for biking. The redbug trees were all blooming on the side of the road and were spectacular! I started at the parking lot on the south end. It was 7 miles round trip and the only steep climb was at the north end. If I ride it again, I would start on the south end and turn around at the top of the hill on the north end and skip that climb.See more..
4.0East Race Waterway(62 reviews) - Great Youth Group Trip Bodies of Water
Brought our middle school and high school students here and they loved it. 12/12 said they want go go again! We did 3 rides which took us just about 2 hours total. After each run you put your gear in the back of the truck and walk up the river walk to the start point. The walk is fun because you can spectate everyone else going down the river. Very fun rapids for beginners to more experienced paddlers. The river has lots of life guards stationed along the river so if you fall out you’re never far from a throw rope and advice on getting back in your raft!See more..

Patoka Lake State Park is a nice place for a relaxing time away from the daily stresses. We've been going to Patoka Lake camping for about 15 years. They have some really nice hiking trails and some of the most extensive paved walking/biking paths within the park. During 2020, I think the staff who clean the comfort stations are doing a pretty good job of keeping things clean. I smelled a faint smell of bleach one day after they had cleaned. There is hand soap in the restrooms so you can wash your hands. (oddly enough, not all parks have hand soap in the past because I have been calling, speaking with the directory on the INDNR for years requesting it in all facilities. One would have thought that the IN SB of H would have required it. Perhaps this year, with COVID-19, perhaps it has pushed the state to finally place them in all facilities???) There is a place that you can rent boats. Simply put, a lot of activities for all ages and interests to do.See more..

3.5Cagles Mill Lake(28 reviews) - Lieber State Recreation Area, more than a park Bodies of Water
This park has so much to offer! We come here often for boating, picnicking, recreation. It is a nice clean park with plenty of shelters and picnic tables. There are several ramps to launch boats, a pool and a sandy beach. There are playgrounds, basketball goals, horseshoes and grassy areas for football, soccer or just relaxing. The camping areas are also nice although like most parks tend to fill up on major holiday weekends. Also check ahead of time because the lake does flood in the spring and early summer sometimes making the beach area inaccessible. Close to the park are the spillway area below the dam with another playground and picnic areas and Cataract Falls.See more..

My children, ages 6, 10, and 14, and I thoroughly enjoyed our first visit here. We all jumped off each platform (10’, 15’, 20’, 30’) and zip line. I was the only one to do the rope swing as it looked a little more intense. I highly recommend for the adventurous at heart! See more..

4.5Striebel Pond(3 reviews) - Nice park Spent 1-2 hours Bodies of Water
This is a park in MC that features a large pond. There's a paved walking/running/biking trail that circles the pond & also cuts across it. The perimeter trail is 1 mile. If you make a figure 8 it's 1.5 miles. There are 2 shelters, a gazebo & bathrooms. 2 parking lots, one on each end of the pond. This area is popular with bird watchers. There's a lot of water birds - ducks, geese, swans. Watch out for goose poop on the trail! This is also only a couple of miles from Lake Michigan & sometimes the wind is brisk. You can't see the lake from here though.See more..
Twin Swamps Nature Preserve is a hidden gem. It is really HIDDEN. There are no signs indicating how to get there. But once you arrive, if you love mature woods, you will love this hike. As we entered the forest, I was struck with a feeling of solitude, in the immense quiet of a mature forest with an open under story. We visited during the beginning of autumn, beautiful colors, acorns, hickory nuts littering the ground. The cypress swamp was impressive with tall knees protruding from the swamp. Coming from Florida, the swamp wasn't as extensive as we are used to -- and there wasn't any spanish moss. If you go, make sure you sign in -- so that they know more people love this place and that they might use more money for improvements. Come on all of you in Posey County, make an outing and visit this delicately balanced ecosystem. There seems to be only a few visits each week.See more..
