4.5Indiana Dunes State Park(880 reviews) - A visit to the State Park Thursday: 7:00 AM - 11:00 PM State Parks • Parks
Indiana Dunes State Park consists of 2,182 acres of primitive, beautiful, historic and unique Hoosier landscape. It lies at the north end of State Road 49 in Porter County, and includes more than three miles of beautiful beach along Lake Michigan’s southern shore. In the early 1900s scientists, recreationists and nature enthusiasts, recognizing the value and potential of the Indiana dunes area, fought to have the region preserved. As a result, in 1925, the state park was established.Large sand dunes, located beyond the entire shoreline, have taken thousands of years to form, and tower nearly 200 feet above Lake Michigan. A wide range of habitats and plant species are found in the park, with vegetation stabilizing some of the sand. These habitats provide homes for many types of plants and animals. The lake also provides habitat for many aquatic species, as well as a constantly changing fishery.Indiana Dunes State Park features a wide variety of habitats, including beach, sand dunes, black oak forest, wooded wetlands, and a button-bush marsh. Together, these areas contain some of the most diverse flora and fauna in the Midwest. Botanists from across the country enjoy studying the unusual collection of plant life. Other interesting features include “tree graveyards” (places where forests have been buried by sand and then, more recently, re-exposed by wind erosion). “Tree graveyards” can be seen in Big Blowout, near Trail 10. The Indiana Dunes area also is renowned throughout the Midwest for its birding. Visit the Nature Center to ask about good birding locations.Indiana Dunes State Park is surrounded by Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, a federally administered park comprising approximately 15,000 acres.See more..
4.5Brown County State Park(842 reviews) - Beautiful Park close to Little Nashville Thursday: 7:00 AM - 11:00 PM Parks
Nicknamed the "Little Smokies" because of the area's resemblance to the Great Smoky Mountains, Brown County encompasses nearly 16,000 acres of rugged hills, ridges and fog-shrouded ravines. Glaciers from the most recent ice ages stopped short of the "hills o' Brown," but their meltwaters helped create the narrow ridges, steep slopes and deep gullies of Brown County State Park. Indiana's largest park is a traditional fall color hot spot, with nearly 20 miles of tree-lined roads and many scenic vistas overlooking miles of uninterrupted forestland.See more..

Indiana’s best kept secret! Gorgeous trails, in all seasons, moderate to very rugged. We love Trail 3, because of its topography, but have recently discovered that Trail 2, Trail 9, and Trail 6 are thrilling as well. The Turkey Run Inn is available to park visitors, with a great game room, relaxing room with fireplace and piano, and a restaurant that will pack a picnic lunch for your hiking trip.See more..

4.0Indiana Dunes National Park(460 reviews) - Wonderful if you love nature Spent More than 3 hours National Parks
We enjoyed very much our visit and want to come back. We visited in early October, started to get chilly, particularly on Lake Michigan beaches, but we had a good time, with the fall leaves color changes just a little before peak. Several commenters here have said it was boring, you could see dunes and be done in 1 hour. Not so. What helped was a half-hour introductory movie at the visitor center, showing the many ecosystems there to orient us. When you walk on the trails, you encounter many kinds of environments. Take the time to appreciate that. The trails are somewhat strenuous, simply because they are composed of really soft, shifting sand. Not your regular trail walking, you are practically doing a moonwalk when you hike. Puts some strain on your thighs, but feels good. Our little dogs loved the feel. Hiking boots would be best, but my tennis shoes were just fine. Beautiful sunsets at Lake Michigan can be had, and you can see Chicago across the water. A bit of a setback is that one trail I tried led you to driving through a somewhat rundown part of Gary Indiana to get there. What was supposed to be a short trail loop ended up taking me about 90 minutes because the signage was not good, and I ended up at the beach, not planned. Fortunately my cell phone was able to help me to find my way back to my car. When the wind whips up at the beaches, the flying sand grains can be punishing, almost like a blizzard. But overall we loved it and plan to returnSee more..
We really liked the water park area. It was clean. The 4 water slides were a lot of fun! Even when the water slide line was at the bottom of the stairs it went really fast. There is 2 slides that use tubes and 2 that don’t. You can do single or double tubes. There is a hot tub that’s adults only. We liked the different styles of hotel rooms. It was nice to have bunk beds for the kids. I wish the sink would have been in the bathroom. My complaint was we had a dirty pillow case and dirty blanket in our room where the kids were going to sleep. Thankfully the rest of the room looked clean. Be prepared since there’s lots of little kids here there is lots of kids running and doors slamming all day long. Our to go breakfast in the morning was biscuits and gravy, Honey Nut Cheerios, yogurt, apple and granola bar. See more..
4.5Spring Mill State Park(384 reviews) - Best State Park around! Historic Sites • State Parks
We have come here over the course of 50 years and the charm has not worn off. The 1820 village with its grist mill is lovely with the babbling brook that runs through the grassy lawn. Come after Memorial Day when there are docents in the buildings. The water wheel is under reconstruction on the mill so you won’t see it operate this summer. But the boat cave tour is still available for $3 a person. What a bargain. The guide said next year the price is going up to $10 which is a shame for families. The Nature Center is nice and you can rent kayaks on the lake. We kept busy for two days. Don’t miss the free memorial to astronaut Gus Grissom at the entrance to the park. Very interesting movie and an actual space capsule.See more..

I visited Washington Park on a weekday so it wasn't crowded at all. The zoo is nice for a smallish municipal park. Nice collection of animals displayed well. The downside is that the zoo is not very handicapped and/or elderly friendly. Most of the paths and stairways are uneven cobblestone with no handrails. I would not recommend it for anyone with mobility problems. They have a nice little gift shop where I bought some cute little mugs. The beach is wonderful. It stays shallow for a distance making it nice for toddlers. The walk out on the pier to the lighthouse has some good views although I don't know if the lighthouse is actually open to the public. They had a covered shelter at the beach with a lot of room if someone wanted to stay out of the sun and the beach itself is huge. I'm sure that you can find a place even on the busiest days. The restroom nearest the zoo was extremely nasty that day but the bathhouse at the beach was less so. If I lived closer I would go frequently!See more..
4.5Eagle Creek Park(340 reviews) - Great outdoor activities Thursday: 7:00 AM - 8:00 PM Parks

This was a short trip passing through Santa IN but what a neat experience. Walking into a building filled with candy and nostalgia. From a huge collection of pez dispensers and all kinds of old school candies took me on a walk down memory lane. But it had all the new fun stuff too. The owner was able to give me lots of history and even explained why he didn’t have my favorite “BB Bats”. I’d say this place is worth the visit. You can tell the owner has a true passion for the business and history of the town. Due to covid some of the usual activities and seating are currently unavailable.See more..

4.5Wilstem(287 reviews) - You must go!! Thursday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Zipline & Aerial Adventure Parks
This place is phenomenal. We did the elephant spa/encounter and the drive thru safari. It was a bit pricey, but worth every penny. We all got to take part washing an elephant, and learning so much! I will say, the highlight of the trip was the Grizzly bears! We went on a rainy Thursday and we were the only ones there when we parked during our drive thru safari. We got to speak with Jeff "the Bear man" Watson and he was so kind and informative. We learned so much!! We got so close to the Grizzly's and the kids were so impressed, we came home and bought, "Grizzly Project" on Amazon so we could watch and learn more about Bob and Screech! My review of the park staff, facilities, cleanliness and natural beauty get this place it’s five stars. Some camping spots are tight but our 23’ travel trailer fits in the spot I reserved. We will reserve a different spot next time. The group in the larger spot next to us, chose to put their tent just two feet from our slide out and part of the tent is in our spot. When it was time to drain water from their cooler, they did so at the back bumper of our trailer. Some people!! No fault of the park of course. This place is beautiful!See more..

4.5Shades State Park(118 reviews) - If you want nature, you want this! State Parks
Shades isn’t a modern park by any means. There’s no electricity in the camp ground. There’s no pool. But that’s great because it keeps the crowds down, and let’s you get up close and personal with some of Indiana’s most beautiful terrain! Took trail 1 and basically hiked up a creek bed through a ravine, seeing nature. Indiana’s most famous park, Turkey Run, is 15 minutes away. while it’s beautiful, I’ll always prefer Shades because of the smaller crowds! 4.0Chain O'Lakes State Park(116 reviews) - Darn those mosquitoes! Otherwise a nice night's stay Thursday: 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM State Parks
Needed a one night campground while on a geocaching road trip to NW Ohio. State Park campgrounds are usually clean and well run. This was no exception. My only complaint was the huge amount of mosquitoes, which I know can't be helped! Clean bathroom and shower. Took a hike around one of the lakes the next morning, very pretty. Wish that there wasn't a $9 fee for out of state. In Michigan we pay one fee for the entire year for entry into state parks. Would definitely return here even with the daily fee, though.See more..

We’ve been camping here several times a year since the year (2004?) the park opened. The full hookups and well maintained campground and trails plus the prairie setting make it easy and peaceful to stay. We’ve seen the grounds and increased hiking and biking trails grow in number and length until one could spend hours walking through numerous ecosystems, all the way to the Tippecanoe and Wabash rivers. Where they meet, at the far edge of the property, is an historic Native American site. The wildflowers and spacious views are a true pleasure. I’m from the West Coast and miss that type of view. A vista. This campground is outstanding. I’m stunned at the poor reviews. You’d have to enjoy camping, hiking, biking in a prairie setting to appreciate it I guess. And I enjoy the historical background. For a peaceful, beautiful camping experience, this place is perfect. See more..

4.0Lincoln State Park(99 reviews) - Lincoln History Inside Park State Parks
Lincoln State Park is located across the road from Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. It offers camping and other outdoor activities. We visited to see two Lincoln attractions. The first one is a memorial which was place in celebration of the Bicentennial of Lincoln's birth. The memorial features a half statue of Lincoln. It has quotes on stones sign, and markers depicting the direction to Washington, DC, and Springfield IL. It is an interesting memorial, worth the trip of you are interested in Lincoln history. Also contained in the park is the site of Sarah Lincoln's grave. It is near the original site of the Little Pigeon Baptist Church, which Lincoln and his father helped to build. It is tradition to put a penny on her grave, which is why you will see so many stacked around it. The park charges a $9 per car fee to enter if you are from out of state. They do accept credit cards.See more..

4.5Centennial Park(62 reviews) - From Clay Pit to Centennial Park Parks
Munster’s main north-south street is Calumet Avenue. Crossing this street just south of 45th Street is an active railroad line. At that intersection the railroad stop was called Maynard. It was also the site nearby of a clay pit and a kiln to make bricks. The stop is gone and so is the kiln and only a clay pit remained. The Town of Munster used land south of the clay pit as a landfill. About 2005 the town planned to convert the land into a park and golf course by the time of the town’s centennial in 2007. Now the clay pit is an attractive double pond with a walk bridge. There are playgrounds, soccer fields, outdoor pavilions, entertainment stage, dog park, fishing, formal gardens, walking and bike paths, a restaurant called “The View,” and banquet facilities. The golf course is a 9 hole challenge designed by Ten Nugent. There is plenty of parking. Recently in the summer a farmers market gathers on Sunday morning. Admission is free.See more..
4.5Splash Island(59 reviews) - Wonderful quaint family place Water Parks
Terribly disappointed, there is no bar at pool side and no pool side waiters. In addition you are not allowed to bring your own alcholhol on your premises. In addition there is no clothing optional section. We discovered the busy time for them in May through August. We were here in February and the water was unusual cold but we had the whole water park to ourselves which made it kind of romantic. Also they only run the water slides during peak season. It was walking distance from the Plainfield yacht and boat club. If you get a chance talk to the harbor master was much help as an unofficial guide and knew many attractions. Also keep in mind sasquatch mating season is in the cool months and you can ohten hear them purring late at night.(it sounds like whale song) also very romantic. A must see are the submarine races, they occur to greet in the lunar new year, very exciting.See more..

We ended up taking the Scouting trail, supposed to be pretty short. This trail turned out to be plenty for us. Beautiful scenery and we didn’t run into any other hikers on the trail! We will likely return to this quiet retreat!See more..
