I would be remiss if I didn't leave a five star rating for this place. Its absolutely beautiful and the gardens are wonderful! However, this used to be free. I was shocked when I learned they are now charging admission fees to view the art museum and Oldfields. Paying the fee is not the problem, we would always donate to both the art museum and Oldfields when we visited Indianapolis on occasion, its just sad that they would take that away from people who might not be able to afford the cost. Shame on you.See more..

4.5La Porte County Historical Society Museum(80 reviews) - Perhaps one of the best, with a delightful collection of classic autos Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM History Museums
This museum surprised me. It's crammed full of autos and other history of the area and its presentation is nothing like the standard rather boring historical museums I've seen. The displays are more "living" than dead and the auto collection is surprisingly interesting, from "ancient" classic cars to an innovative futuristic car the museum founder had been developing. This is a rather lively place and I suspect even small children would be intrigued by the way the displays don't talk down to one, and yet don't simplify things so much as to be dumbed down. It took me years to get here and I'm sorry I waiting so long.See more..
This museum is great! There are exhibits for local veterans dating from WWI to present day. 4.5Fairmount Historical Museum(38 reviews) - There’s no place like Fairmount for this Dorothy Thursday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM History Museums
I spent quite a bit of time at the Fairmount Historical Society today discussing James Dean with Dorothy, who says she is the biggest James Dean fan in the world and I have to say I believe her. While I am not a huge James Dean fan, my brother Eddie is the second biggest fan after Dorothy and I was in the area so I decided to FaceTime a visit with him. The museum is absolutely loaded with real James Dean artifacts as acquired through his family and some others. They have EVERYTHING you can imagine from his childhood, high school and his film career. You will see memorabilia from his films that you will recognize if you are a fan of Dean. If you are lucky enough to meet Dorothy you will be delighted by how much she loves the subject of the museum (well, the main subject- they have a Garfield room as Jim Davis grew up in the area). Loaded with cool souvenirs so bring a few bucks and support this incredible museum. I highly recommend this museum.See more..

We made a wrong turn and ended up driving through the center of Crown Point. The courthouse dominated the views and its distinct red and white color scheme stood out. It was quite a large building and unexpected. Parking surrounded the courthouse and a spot was easily found. Across the street were shops and restaurants. The restaurants had outdoor seating and views of the courthouse. As we walked around we found the National Register of Historical Places plaque. It was no longer just a courthouse but a museum (closed that day) and a basement full of shops. Grounds were well maintained with large shade trees and benches for relaxing. Worth a quick stop should one be in the area. See more..

Had the opportunity to visit the boyhood home of Mr. Grissom. What a fantastic experience that turned out to be, spent well over an hour with 2 gentlemen, Steve and Anthony (Tony) who had a vast knowledge of Gus's career, relatives and friends of the family. There were a lot more original pieces in the house that belonged to the Grissoms than I had anticipated. Their interest of the Grissom name and personal involvement in the community ended up being the highlight of my trip to Mitchell. If you are interested in history, space or just want to learn something about a small town boy who followed his dreams and made them a reality then I would not hesitate to stop by the house and take a stroll back in time to this magical, quaint home. The museum is open every Saturday from 11a - 3p during certain months of the year, go check it out and enjoy this unknown piece of American history.See more..

4.5Ohio County Historical Society Museum(8 reviews) - Great area-focused museum Spent < 1 hour Speciality Museums • Natural History Museums • History Museums
I had a great time at the Ohio County Museum. There was no set admission fee, just a donation box for free will contributions. I went to see a small collection of quilts that are traveling, made by members of the American Quilt Study Group. I also got to see an exhibition called Flo & Edna's Quilts, which was a collection of much loved and much used family quilts made by this family's prolific quilters - Flo & Edna. I arrived 1 hour before closing, but was welcomed and had plenty of time to view the quilts. I would have liked to stay longer to see the other artifacts representing the history of Ohio County. I'll have to go earlier next time. They have items manufactured in the area, agricultural artifacts, as well as genealogy and Civil War libraries. They also have a collection of local quilts that will be on display in the coming year. I plan to go back for that! It's a very small museum with a rich heritage.See more..

4.5Round Barn Museum(7 reviews) - Lots of old cool buildings Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • History Museums
When we visited in 2020, this attraction was called the "Fulton County Historical Society Museum" and the Round Barn was just one of several attractions. In addition to the Round Barn, there are multiple other buildings including the Polke House (from the 1830's, but restored to early 20th century appearance), a 1930's doctor's office and dentist's office, an early 20th century general store, a late 19th century railroad station, an old town jail, and several others. You can go into the office and ask a staff member to let you into these structures. The museum has a lot of old preserved documents (diplomas from the 1910's, etc.) and does a good job of documenting the history of furniture found inside the buildings. There is also a vast indoor museum about Fulton County's history, but I did not go inside due to COVID-19 concerns. Overall, for a county of just 20,000 people this museum punches well above its weight and is worth a stop.See more..
