  1. 4.5 Monon Trail (353 reviews)
    - What a Motivator to Exercise
    Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
    Monon Trail image
We were visiting the area and discovered the Monon Trail. It is a lovely and lengthy trail to walk, run, skate, or bike. Just be courteous and watch out for slower walkers and children. It was not overly crowded on a May weekend and the part we were on felt very safe. With trails like this that connect different areas of town, it is a motivator to walk or bike to things rather than just hopping in the car. There are eateries, play places, and resting areas all along the way. Find the cool Carmel sign in the Midtown area for a great photo. If I remember correctly, the trail is about 26 miles long running from downtown Indianapolis up to the Carmel and Westfield areas. Great find!! See more..

  3. 4.5 Cardinal Greenway (101 reviews)
    - A great experience!

    Cardinal Greenway image
The Greenway is a great way to get in a few to a lot of miles, conveniently located in the Muncie, Richmond, and Gaston areas. It is well maintained and most parts have very little traffic at the intersections. Right off the Richmond trailhead (at the southernmost point) are several restaurants and downtown Richmond, with antique stores and local fare. Just heads up: this is not plowed in the winter months. 4. 5.0 Pumpkinvine Nature Trail (100 reviews)
    - One of my favorite bike rides
    Hiking Trails
    Pumpkinvine Nature Trail image
This 17 mile linear rail trail is quite scenic, partly shaded, slightly hilly, and mostly paved with asphalt. Near Goshen there is a section of hard packed limestone easily negotiable with road bike. Several new sections have been completed in recent years, but there remains a short segment (about 1 mile) on country roads without any shoulder. You pass many Amish farms complete with horse-drawn buggies and carts. You encounter many Amish folk bicycling the trail and farmers mowing their fields with a team of horses. See more..
  5. 4.5 Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve (76 reviews)
    - Lovely Hiking Trail Along Coffee Creek
Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails • Scenic Walking Areas
    Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve image
The Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve is a 157-acre complex of wetlands, woodlands, and prairie. More than 400 native plant species have been identified on the property. The magnificent display of wildflowers from spring through fall is one of The Preserve’s most notable features. Many common mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and butterflies make their homes here, and there is a diverse birdlife, including both nesting and migratory species. Coffee Creek is one of the healthiest streams in the southern Lake Michigan watershed. Salmon, trout, and many other fish swim in its waters. The Preserve is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. A system of trails, including a three-mile loop around the perimeter, is popular with hikers, joggers, dog walkers, birders, and other nature lovers. Photographers are attracted by the abundant wildlife and wildflowers. Anglers find fishing in the creek excellent. A variety of classes, workshops, and hikes are provided throughout the year. 6. 4.5 Jasper Riverwalk (76 reviews)
    - Nice trail
    Hiking Trails
    Jasper Riverwalk image
A peaceful nature walk that is in the city. The trail follows a river and is completely paved. There is parking at 3 different places on the trail. It is a couple miles long and mostly level ground. There was some wildlife we saw along the trail, mostly butterflies. We did get bit by a few mosquitoes so don't forget repellent of your choice. There are several benches along the way to rest as well. See more..

    Ouabache Trails Park image
When our oldest son decided he wanted to go to Vincennes University 7 years ago we had no idea we would end up falling in love with this beautiful park! So, when our 2nd oldest son graduated a few weeks ago it was a bitter/joyful feeling. It was as if my wife and I had made it a little getaway when we would come down. The people at the park are fabulous, and the cabins up on the hill were a godsend after a 5 hour drive down from the Chicagoland/South Bend area. The only time we ever stayed at a hotel in the last 7 years was our 1st trip down, because the cabins were so relaxing, along with some wonderful short trails to walk. It makes me homesick just thinking about it right now. If you have a child deciding to go to Vincennes University you will definitely want to check out this park (especially around Christmas!). 13. 4.5 Milwaukee Trail (33 reviews)
    - Scenic 20 mile trail through the heart of Bedford
    Hiking Trails
    Milwaukee Trail image
This new trail began as the Milwaukee Railroad. Since 2006, when it was no longer in use, it sat as a neglected, overgrown path coursing through the bottom of a steep ravine and working it's way to the countryside. Through a city Stellar grant, it has came back to life as a walking/biking trail. Fine gravel and new bridges have been put in place and now it's a beautiful outdoor experience! Brand new and still improving, the only current access point/parking is off John Williams Blvd/U St near the Samco building. With plans to further develop the town portion eastward, the path now goes west at least 5 finished miles. It snakes in and out of Salt Creek through shady woods and exposed limestone. Activity is picking up and there are bikers, joggers,& family walkers all out enjoying the new trail. it's very flat and easy to navigate. Also, there are enough people on it, that I've always felt safe. See more..
  14. 4.5 Cowles Bog (33 reviews)
    - Surprisingly shady trail for a dune hike
Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
    Cowles Bog image
Based on the recommendation for a nice hike by the ranger at the National Park Visitor Center, I went on the Cowles Bog Trail. Being a weekday, I saw only a couple of cars at the parking lot near Dune Acres guardhouse. I took the east branch and hiked up to the beach. There were some bugs along the way, and a spray might have helped. The uphill sections to get over the dunes are very steep and the sand is deep, making for a study hike. But most of the trail surprisingly has shade, except at the beach. The steepest dune is at the beach. In total, it is a 4.7 mile round trip hike. Overall this was a challenging and enjoyable hike, and the views of Lake Michigan and the beach are a bonus. But, if the intention is just to experience a dune, this may not be the place. See more..

    - Lock and Dam view
    Biking Trails • Hiking Trails
    Rivertown Trail image
We parked at the Newburgh Lock and Dam, which was the eastern end of the trail. Bathrooms and playground are available here, along with views of the operations of the lock and dam. Taking the trail uphill yields an even better view. Above that is Indian Hill Overlook Park, which is accessible by car from French Island Trail but also on foot from the Rivertown trail. Total trail length is 5 miles. See more..

We are visiting the area (May 2021) and it is sunny one day and raining crazy the next. Warm and then cold. However we picked the perfect day to ride this trail. It has a lot of tree coverage and shaded areas. It is wide enough for traffic going both ways. I highly recommend this trail for walking or bike riding. It is all asphalt and no motor traffic. Heritage Trail image
There Heritage Trail in Madison, IN begins downtown along the riverfront on Vaughn Drive. You follow the old railroad tracks along until you reach the part where the trail becomes paved. The Heritage Trail is not completely finished yet but the part that is takes you up the hill to the Madison State Hospital grounds. A roundtrip on the trail is 1.5 miles. Great for bikers, hikers, pets. Great views of the Ohio River along the trail! There is a water fountain half way up the hill. See more..
  21. 4.5 Pate Hollow Trail (12 reviews)
    - Close but secluded
    Hiking Trails
Traffic noise fades away as you start to hike and it feels like you are much farther form Bloomington than a 15 minute drive.Very popular trail with trail runners and hikers, so it can be busy at times, but this narrow trail takes you up and down hills and through dense woodlands, crossing small streams and little waterfalls. Lots of wildflowers in the spring and glimpses of Lake Monroe through the trees. The whole trail is over 7 miles long, but there is a cut-off that makes it half that. See more..

    DePauw Nature Park image
Has become my go-to spot for hiking. With better than 10 miles of trails winding through woods, over hills and meadows, along a large creek, and even through a quarry (!), you can come up with an infinite variety of options. Lots of deer and vultures, as well as songbirds. Great indoor restrooms (and some porta-potties scattered here and there.) Part of DePauw and just west of their athletic facilities. Trails are well-maintained and patrolled. See more..

    Donner Park image
We love Donner Park!!! From the playground, to the shelter house... the walking paths, tennis courts, basketball court and the SWIMMING POOL! Can you tell we love the pool? We hang at the playground about 9 months a year and we're at the pool at least 4 days a week. It's our go to neighborhood park. The pool has diving boards, swim lanes, a junior pool with a water playground and mini slide, then there's the large waterslide. It's fun for everyone - even those who dislike the sun!! Yes, that's right.. they have huge umbrellas that you can sit under to enjoy shade. And at certain times of the day, the umbrellas even shade portions of the pool, so you can swim in the shade too. This is our "go to" park in Columbus. See more..

  30. 4.5 Knobstone Trail (7 reviews)
    - Impressive! Much harder than I was expecting......
    Hiking Trails
    Knobstone Trail image
I started from the south at mile marker 0. Made it 14.5 miles on the first day then camped. Much more difficult than I was expecting since it's just "Indiana" but there are some pretty serious hills. Also, there are virtually no switchbacks. This makes it more challenging because the trail just goes straight up the hill then straight down the other side. Some of the hills are very steep so exhausting going up and hard on the knees coming down. Good training for my upcoming Rockies hike. Knobstone is well blazed at least in the first 20 miles. 31. 4.0 Dune Ridge Trail (6 reviews)
    - Good Representation of Indiana Dunes National Park in Less than a Mile
    Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails
    Dune Ridge Trail image
We visited Beverly Shores and the Century of Progress District before lunch so this was our first hike in IDNP. Even though it is a short 3/4 of a mile trail, you really get to see a lot of Indiana Dunes NP. It has meadow, Black Oak Savanah, a dune ridge and an inland marsh behind the dune. These are features you will repeatedly see in IDNP, The other thing it really prepared us for is sand. Nearly every trail here is soft sand. I will also say while you will hike dune ridges everywhere, this is really the only one from which you have a good few as most of the others were covered with trees. Finally, I loved the shade valleys between the ridges as the shade was very comfortable. See more..
  32. 4.5 Panhandle Pathway (6 reviews)
    - 20 mile north to south paved rails to trails path well maintained
Spent 2-3 hours Biking Trails • Hiking Trails • Jogging Paths & Tracks
    Panhandle Pathway image
This is a very nice trail and well maintained. Because it runs north to south it can be quite hot. I recommend riding on a day that is below 80 degrees. Prevailing winds in this area are out of the south. We rode the entire trail (40 miles round trip) with a 20 mile an hour head wind. Luckily when we turned around to ride home wind was at our back and we breezed back. Stop at the bob-o-link cafe in Royal Center for a snack along the way. Great for hiking, biking, bird watching. Black Rock Nature Preserve image
Where I live in Indiana, there are very few lovely places to explore that look like Black Rock Nature Preserve. There is so much flat land around me that it is nice to see some height and views. This Nature Preserve is small enough and easy enough for most ages to roam. No guard rails by the rocks so watch the little ones but it's a nice place for a picnic with that special someone. There is also the bottoms at the base of black rock and if the stream is dry, you will be rewarded with many opportunities to find small flat rocks to skip on the Wabash. The name "Wabash" is an English spelling of the French name for the river, "Ouabache". French traders named the river after the Miami-Illinois word for the river, waapaahšiiki, meaning "it shines white", "pure white", or "water over white stones".The Miami name reflected the clarity of the river elsewhere but not here at Black Rock. - Perfect

How much can you expect from a "walking trail"? I walk starting from the Williams end of the trail. It is clean. It's dry even hours after a hard rain. It's very small fine gravel, no mud. It it out in the open, fresh air. Low traffic or none. Few surrounding dogs to hassle with, few road crossings per mile. "Not safe"? What is there to be protected from other than your self. At some point people have to decide if they are adult enough to walk down a gravel path by their self. My self, I don't need the company of the police to hold my hand every time I step our of a car and appreciate the solitude and freedom of not dealing with any one else. I'll risk it.
