    Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve image
The Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve is a 157-acre complex of wetlands, woodlands, and prairie. More than 400 native plant species have been identified on the property. The magnificent display of wildflowers from spring through fall is one of The Preserve’s most notable features. Many common mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and butterflies make their homes here, and there is a diverse birdlife, including both nesting and migratory species. Coffee Creek is one of the healthiest streams in the southern Lake Michigan watershed. Salmon, trout, and many other fish swim in its waters. The Preserve is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. A system of trails, including a three-mile loop around the perimeter, is popular with hikers, joggers, dog walkers, birders, and other nature lovers. Photographers are attracted by the abundant wildlife and wildflowers. Anglers find fishing in the creek excellent. A variety of classes, workshops, and hikes are provided throughout the year. The lights were closed down Sep 2022. Only the bridge lights were on, but has to be great when they work. Take the path next to the river south and arrive at Howard Park which has the best kids playground I have ever seen. Great place. See more..

    Marion's Mississinewa Riverwalk image
We have walked the Marion Mississinewa River walk and it never disappoints. The scenery keeps changing as the river winds towards the Wabash. Even when the path veers off from the river, I still feel close to the water while walking through woods. The last mile or so is in the beautiful Matter Park. Built in the 1890's, I can visualize the days when there was a small passenger steam boat offering rides during the Summer. Leland P Gamson See more..

  8. 4.0 Loblolly Marsh Nature Preserve (1 review)
    - Hiking in Indiana
Spent 2-3 hours Scenic Walking Areas
This nature preserve is a good example of what drained marshes and swamps look like 100 years later. The hiking trails are maintained and clear. From the parking area, the west trails (Veronica, etc.) total about 1 mile, are very flat, and with no shade through a marsh with interpretative signs. The east trails work best in counter-clockwise, marsh first, then a quick out-back through woods, then the Upland Trail, ending at the Tree ID Trail. Mileage, about 1.5 miles and flat. The Tree ID Trail is kind of fun, although short. See more..
  9. 4.0 Shrader-Weaver Nature Preserve (1 review)
    - Hiking in Indiana
Spent 2-3 hours Scenic Walking Areas
From the parking lot follow the main trail to the Trail Junction. There are two trails -- Woods Trail and Succession Trail. Both are loops. The Woods Trail goes through successional and "old-growth" forests with lots of Blue-eyed Mary plants in late April. The Successional Trail has some wet areas that require some creative path finding. We spent about 45 minutes on each trail. Invasive Report: The Woods Trail was fairly clear of invasive plants, unlike the Successional Trail that had lots of bush honeysuckle. See more..
  10. 4.0 Bell-Croft Woods Nature Preserve (1 review)
    - Hiking in Indiana
    Scenic Walking Areas
This is a small, but nice, mature woodland. The parking area holds 2 cars and an out-back trail through woods leads to the actual nature preserve. Trail was maintained and clearly marked. While not strenuous (perhaps 6' gross elevation change), there are lots of exposed tree roots. Total mileage, about 1 mile and takes less than ah hour. Invasive report: Pretty clear. One japanese honeysuckle vine spotted on the out-back trail. See more..
