4.5Roman City Carnuntum(231 reviews) - Recreated Roman Town in Austria! Sunday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums
From the 1st to the 4th century AD, Carnuntum was a significant Roman metropolis on the border of the Roman Empire. Carnuntum became the capital of the province of Pannonia Superior with about 50,000 inhabitants, making it one of the biggest cities in the northern Empire. Because of its militarily vital location for securing the border and its proximity to key trade routes Carnuntum blossomed. Our goal is to vividly present the history and basic scientific research associated with the Roman City of Carnuntum. Antiquity comes alive again in the Roman city quarter with its reconstructed ancient buildings as well as in the amphitheaters and Museum Carnuntinum, the city’s treasure chamber.See more..

Given the sad history of this place it is really beautiful and solemnly peaceful, take your time and don't rush this place and it will be worth the visit. We have made the mistake of visiting Mayerling as part of an organised tour, which didn't give us the time needed to explore it thoroughly. So if possible organise to get there by yourself. The drive from Vienna is also picturesqueSee more..

OK, I'm a train nerd, I love steam, in the UK I spend days going up and down heritage lines. Here there isn't the same passion but this museum gets close. From Vienna take line S1, Ganserndorf, to Silberwalt, about 20 minutes, the museum is a short walk from the station. Go on Sunday if you possibly can, more is happening. Open 10:00 to 17:00. There's an incredible range of 19th to late 20th century trains and rolling stock, much of it able to raise steam or in process of renovation. On Sunday you can get a short run in a heritage diesel shunting loco, there's a little play railway to amuse the kids, there's a shed of restored electric, steam and diesel locos and many "dormant" engines rusting majestically awaiting restoration. There's also a canteen with excellent beer and wurst inna bun. Great day out for train lovers if you've got time, make time! See more..

4.5Museum Carnuntinum(27 reviews) - Compact insights into Roman organisation Sunday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • History Museums
The Carnuntinum Museum is a must for every visit to Carnuntum. It was built by Friedrich Ohmann and August Kirstein, two of the most respected architects of the late Austro-Hungarian Empire, and opened in 1904 by Emperor Franz Josef I himself. Built in the spirit of historicism in the style of a Roman country villa, the design takes up typical architectural elements from the Roman provinces. From June 30, 2022, the museum will present a brand new exhibition: Carnuntum - Weltstadt am Donaulimes. On the basis of exhibits from the collections of the province of Lower Austria, some of which have never been shown before, the history of the city, but also its social life, will be impressively portrayed. The Museum Carnuntinum is thus the ideal starting point for a journey of discovery through the Roman city of Carnuntum.See more..
4.0MAMUZ Museum Mistelbach(23 reviews) - Great Stonehenge exhibition Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Natural History Museums • Science Museums • Art Museums • Children's Museums
In 2021, the MAMUZ Museum in Mistelbach dedicates itself to the legendary culture of the Maya by providing a comprehensive Mayan exhibition in Austria for the first time in 25 years. The exhibition takes an in-depth look at the habitat of the Maya in the tropical lowlands as well as in the volcanic highlands of Guatemala. How come that the Maya were able to achieve such a cultural flowering despite the difficult environmental conditions? How did they organise their coexistence? And what were the causes of the collapse of this high culture? The exhibition comprises more than 200 original objects from Central America of which many exhibits are presented in Europe for the first time. A special highlight is the large number of exhibits made of jade. Latest research results based on archaeological excavations and translation work of the Mayan script also shed new light on the social and cultural life of this advanced civilisation.See more..
4.5Schifffahrtsmuseum Spitz(23 reviews) - Travel on the Danube River & Apricot Brandy Sunday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Speciality Museums
Downstream - Upstream: An exciting journey through the history of the historical shipping on the Danube within the historical ambience of the "Erlahof" castle. Let us dive down to the bed of the river and see what it has kept as a record of ancient times - in the Danube. Let us travel against the current of the river, upstream in a heavily laden timber cargo boat - with the Danube and follow the teams of horses that pulled the boat upstream against the current with enormous effort - on the Danube. At the villages along the riverbanks to the workshops of a boat builder and the raft construction sites - along the Danube. This is the way we take to follow the course of the Danube in the museum and to learn how our forefathers earned a living: in harmony with the moods of the river and the mighty forces of nature.See more..
This is a nice educational site along our bike route that describes the Venus statue found here in the early 1900s while excavating a paleolithic site. The original statue is only about 11cm high (less than 5 inches) and was remarkable in that several other Venus-type carvings have been found across the world. The Willendorf figurine is approximated to be almost 30,000 years old. The historic site has a large reproduction statue so you can appreciate the figure, plus some interpretive signs.
See more..

We took an afternoon to drive outside Vienna and decided to visit Lilienfeld. This Abbey is amazing. It costs 6€ to get an audioguide to the site. For once? the English version was robust, explicit, and complete. You get to visit the cloister, a chapel, a fountain, and the interior garden as well as the cathedral and several exterior sites. The stained glass is worth the visit even though there are many other wonderful parts (black marble in the cathedral). Take the drive!See more..

The staff on duty were really friendly and welcoming. If you are at all interested in military history or Napoleon/Archduke Charles, this museum is for you. Easy to get to (we took the train from Vienna). There are cold drinks available on site and we had excellent coffee & cake in a bakery in the village. It made my Sunday!See more..

4.5Atomkraftwerk Zwentendorf(7 reviews) - Nuclear plant that didn’t separate atoms Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums
Great vacation trip and business trip because I’m journalist and I wrote about the only nuclear plant in the world that had been built but never in service. It was, as spokesman of electric company said, the only nuclear plant that separated families instead of atoms. Story is great; chancellor of Austria Bruno Kreisky in the 70’s wanted to implement nuclear energy in Austria and asked Austrians if they wanted it. On referendum they voted “no” with 50,4 % of population in spite of atomplant already built. I saw reactor from above and from downder. Remarkable experience. Going there is like you’ve turned back in 70’s because nothing is changed.See more..
you will just pay 2 euros and you can see a small room with few artefacts. Staff was a bit rude in time of our visit. Free visit to excavation site, but all writing were in german language.
