-Absolutely Stunning
Spent 2-3 hours Churches & Cathedrals
The abbey is absolutely fantastic. It is beautiful in its own right and the added feature of stunning views is a plus. We enjoyed a walk through the grounds and castle and had a very informative guide. My wife, a Catholic, was happy to receive communion in the abbey during a service going on at the time. They have a wonderful gift shop with a range of prices to purchase nice gifts and liquors, wines and foodstuffs. It was one of the highlights of our Danube River cruise. See more..

-Visiting and Appreciating the Heiligenkreuz Abbey
Spent 1-2 hours Churches & Cathedrals
„Stift Heiligenkreuz“, which means the „Abbey of Heiligenkreuz“, is a beautiful and living Cistercian monastery, close to Vienna, the capital of Austria. Stift Heiligenkreuz is the second-oldest Cistercian monastery in the world and the oldest continuously active and inhabited one, now full of young vocations. In September 2007 it was blessed by an official visit by Pope Benedict XVI. Stift Heiligenkreuz, peacefully situated in the middle of the „Wienerwald“, the Vienna woods, is one of the most beautiful medieval monasteries in the world. It was founded in 1133 by St. Leopold III of the House of Babenberg. Currently the monastery has 105 members, 18 affiliated parishes and a Pontifical Theological Academy (founded 1802). -Nice monastery, also with a nice garden closeby
Spent More than 3 hours Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
The church and the Hofgarten, a nicely setup Baroque revival garden adjacent to the monastery are for free. The exhibition is full of paintings, also including modern art. If you do the exhibition you also have access to some of the rooms. I would recommend though to do the guided tour, which gives you additional access to the very nice library, as well as the marble hall among other places. My guide was a young lady, who is a student of the upper high school which is also housed in the monastery itself. Although this was her first tour of the monastery which she told me later on she did a nice engaging job. Although the monastery itself might not be as famous as Melk or Göttweig it feels for sure more welcoming. It is though a bit tough to reach by public transport, on Saturday I had to walk along small roads from the nearest train station, which is about 45 minutes out. The walk is nice, but still I would love Austria to put a bit more effort into decent bus connections, not only here but all over the countryside they seem to lack all of that, even in major tourist spots. We took an afternoon to drive outside Vienna and decided to visit Lilienfeld. This Abbey is amazing. It costs 6€ to get an audioguide to the site. For once? the English version was robust, explicit, and complete. You get to visit the cloister, a chapel, a fountain, and the interior garden as well as the cathedral and several exterior sites. The stained glass is worth the visit even though there are many other wonderful parts (black marble in the cathedral). Take the drive! See more..

Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent 1-2 hours Churches & Cathedrals
We drove out to the Maria Laach as it was on our list of things to see while we were in the Lower Austria region staying in Linz. Lovely ride through the countryside and then you come upon the church on the hill. According to my research, the abbey area would be open at 10 am however we waited until at least 10:30 and no one showed up. We did go into the church which was quite beautiful but it would have been nice to see the entire place. See more..
