-Friday, May 7th afternoon visit.
Castles
Castle Kuernriger (Schloß Kürnriger) is the main attraction of Durnstein (Dürnstein). It is the ruins of the castle in which Richard Leoncoeur, King of England was held prisoner for a year while returning from a Crusade. The ransom was used by the Duke of Babenberg to build the city walls of Vienna. This is a popular historical attraction especially for British people. See more..

-Good, but short and little pricey
Monday: 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM Castles
The castle is in perfect condition outside and inside. It is very beautiful and there are many things from that times that are in perfect shape. The tour is great, but only in German. The guide, nice lade named Kristina (I hope I remember correctly) was kind enough and from time to time gave us personal comments in English. Interiors are nice looking, interesting and with lots of stuff too. However, for some unknown reason, it is strictly prohibited to take photos / videos inside (in the rooms). Also tour is very-very short, like 45 minutes only and ticket price is a bit high for such a short tour of several rooms only. There is birds show outside and nice restaurant too. Overall, we were happy that we visited it. See more..

-Back to the 1970's
Spent 2-3 hours Castles
Well since the 1970's there has been an annual, summer, exhibition held in this lovely castle. The 2016 subject was indeed the 70's. A fascinating event, a reminder of so many items we owned / used. As a visitor from abroad it was particularly interesting to see the political slant on world affairs from a mid European country. It would be difficult to provide English translations for all the documents, but many of the labels we placed rather low down on / or were badly lit. From our visit it would appear to appeal mostly to locals. We only heard German spoken and all with an Austrian accent. That said it was much quieter, more pleasant, than neighbouring Melk, which is positively overrun with visitors. We didn't see the garden as it was cold and wet the day we visited. But there was a lovely cafe /restaurant (see separate review) which served delicious soup. The 2017 Exhibition is Islam, which may really bring in the crowds. Hayling Seagoon See more..

Attended the yearly tournament show. Coloful knights and horses. Was a great experience being taken back some hundred years. My personal takeawy: impressed how agile and fast fighters on horses actually are. Military forces on horses (cavalry) must have been the aspiration of rulers in the past, similar to supersonic fighter planes are to today... See more..

-If you love old castles...
Monday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Castles
The Liechtenstein Castle, situated on the southern edge of the Vienna Woods, family seat of the Prince of Liechtenstein, is not a museum in the traditional sense, but a while steeped in history, but also very lively place, which annually attracts thousands of visitors from around the world. In addition to substantial parts of the Romanesque castle from the year 1130 to make numerous pieces of furniture, such as weapons, furniture and beamed ceiling, reliefs and the chapel, as well as one of the most beautiful views over Vienna, the castle, to a year-round attractive cultural institution. The present castle was built in 19th Century restored house of Liechtenstein and is still located in their property. She served nearly 200 years (1130-1295) as a temporary residence of the family, and embodies a family history 900 years. Moreover, it has in the last decades of the 19th century, beginning of the 20th century served as a museum of the Castle family. We are looking forward to your visit! See more..

-Gorgeous castle. Especially for music lovers!
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
This is a really nice castle — stunning on the outside, and beautifully restored on the inside, including a good museum section devoted to classical composers. The only reason it does not get five stars is the limited amount of information in English, and the lack of an audio tour. If you attend the Grafenegg music festival in the summer, the castle is right there. Enjoy!! See more..

-Better than the ruins at Durnstein?
Castles
These ruins on the western side of Spitz have great views up and down the Danube. There are no legends of Richard the Lionheart, but the castle is in much better condition than that at Durnstein. The walk is under 10 minutes from the nearest street. I followed the track from the southern end of the little street on the west side of the creek. The more dangerous parts of the ruined castle are fenced off from the public. Take your time and enjoy the 270 degree views from east, south to west. See more..

-Great castle ruin
Castles
This castle is original dated 1186. The fortress was originally built by the Knights of Tursen. Seized by the Turks and rebuilt twice . We parked across the street at the Sacher hotel and walked over to the street named after the ruin . I expected it would be difficult to get to but it was a short walk up . I do not recommend this trail for mobility impaired or for those with small children. If the trail is wet I assume it would be pretty muddy and slick . It is very scenic and picturesque to the entrance and to the top of the keep if you enjoy old ruins :) In the distance from the top of the keep the Ravens Egg fortress can be seen at the top of the opposite mountain . Do not forget to notice the mid evil toilet . There are flights of stairs all the way up to the top of the keep . This is an absolute must see if visiting the Baden area of Austria See more..

-For the history and nature buffs
Spent 2-3 hours Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Castles
It did not seem that high when viewed from the road, but appearances are deceptive. The steep climb was a bit more than some go us in the group had bargained for. The lure of seeing an actual place that was part of Richard the Lionheart was what drew us to this place. Situated right on the Danube, the path leads through a small village with a cobblestoned street and then up the hill. The path is narrow and is a mixed trek of stair steps and rocky foot ledges. The view from the top was beautiful and worth the climb. Need to take water or food with you since there is nothing available on the route above the village and nor on the top itself. Information laid out on the top laid bare the myth of Robin Hood; seems that all outlaws during that time were called Robins of the Hood! The castle itself is just a ruin now and has not been rebuilt since it was destroyed by shelling of the Swedish armies in the 30 years war in the 1600s. See more..

-History Romantic!
Spent 2-3 hours Castles
The historical Palace was originally a fortification for the town of Marchegg and was constructed under King Ottokar of Bohemia in 1268. Today the town is known for the eponymous Baroque Place and for its storks. In 2022 it has been completely renovated and made barrier-free. It creates a perfect setting for families to embark on an adventurous journes: from a very special natural landscape to a cultural-historical site. Marchegg is home to Central Europe's largest colony of white storks breeding in trees. They build their nests in the old trees of the Marchauen, a Nature Reserve, which is managed by WWF. -If you're lucky, you might even cross paths with a herd of kinik ponies. Thank you for treating these wild and wonderful animals with respect. You can book guided nature tours around the year at the "Marchegger Storchenhaus" (in the palace, open end of March to beginning November). The Museum is open from May to beginning November. My friend recommended me this castle. Reportedly it's a very important site for history of Austria but honestly, I didn't feel like it's some special place. I mean, yes, the nature all around is nice but the castle ruins are just... ruins. I'm not really into this type of sites, but I like the efforts of locals to keep the castle alive... you can see the podium and stands there. -Smaller castle with unspoiled interior
Castles
This castle is a smaller one, but still worth a visit. You have to visit it with a guide, but its definitely worth it. The interior you get to see, is older then what you get to see in most of the bigger castles. (be sure to check online for tour hours) In a part of the castle that you can visit yourself, there is a room wich is dedicated to boardgames, and they have a few large one on the tables that you can try out, wich is really great for the kids. You get a discount if you have the Niederösterreich-card. It took us about one and a half hours to visit the castle. -Amazing castle
Castles
Amazing Castle on top of a mountain, their are 2 ways to go up to the castle, the shorter way which is a bit steep and rocky or the longer way which is actually made for cars. Each summer there is an amazing "fest" at the castle with a lot of nice drinks, food, fire works and atmosphere. The place up there has something relaxing and spiritual about it with a lot of history and stories. If you are up for a longer walk you could take the road from the castle to the "turken sturtz" which is another few minutes walk but you will not regret it when you are there as it has an amazing view. Very central location, well cleaned and very friendly reception by Mrs Lorenz. Fresh flowers and well stocked regarding kitchenware etc. even shower gel etc were supplied. A few minor quirks (old doors and inefficient heating) are gladly accepted for that. The view is spectacular: you can see the ruins and village of Dürnstein from the kitchen. A small supermarket with all necessities and fresh bread is right opposite the castle, parking lot is not five minutes by foot. Opening hours are somewhat limited but can certainly be managed. Poldis Kaffee Eckerl (Café) is next to the supermarket and always well visited by locals. Around the corner is a local Heuriger and the larger 'Rossatz 8'.
