- 4.5 Stift Klosterneuburg (318 reviews)
-Do a little research before going
Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites
One place. A thousand stories. In 1114, Klosterneuburg Abbey was founded by Margrave Leopold III. For over 900 years, history has been written here and stories have been told. It is those stories that we have collected over the centuries – they make our spirituality as well as the close connection of this house to Austrian history tangible. The story of the Verdun altar (1181) illustrates the history of the abbey’s spirituality as well as its closeness to the people. The altar, apart from its material splendour, served one purpose above all - to make the Holy Scriptures and the Holy Mass easier to understand, even for those who were unable to read and write. The laying of the foundation stone for the abbey church (1114) is a symbol for the abbey’s longevity and its responsibility to create. At this event, wine from its own winery was served. It is the oldest winery in Austria, which has been run by Klosterneuburg Abbey since the Middle Ages. See more..

-704m altitude, views of the Alps
Religious Sites
Possibly our most favourite cathedral that we have visited in the last 5 months. For one, our Austrian friends took us on a tour of their home town (Amstetten) in the lower Austrian region of Mostviertal, and we visited this cathedral at sunset. There was absolutely no one else around, it was dark. and the feeling inside was so peaceful and it was a great experience. From what I could see in near darkness, the ceilings were covered in frescos, statues galore, and a lot of history. Outside, it was freezing cold, beautiful green hills on either side of the cathedral. Must visit! See more..

-Nice monastery, also with a nice garden closeby
Spent More than 3 hours Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
The church and the Hofgarten, a nicely setup Baroque revival garden adjacent to the monastery are for free. The exhibition is full of paintings, also including modern art. If you do the exhibition you also have access to some of the rooms. I would recommend though to do the guided tour, which gives you additional access to the very nice library, as well as the marble hall among other places. My guide was a young lady, who is a student of the upper high school which is also housed in the monastery itself. Although this was her first tour of the monastery which she told me later on she did a nice engaging job. Although the monastery itself might not be as famous as Melk or Göttweig it feels for sure more welcoming. It is though a bit tough to reach by public transport, on Saturday I had to walk along small roads from the nearest train station, which is about 45 minutes out. The walk is nice, but still I would love Austria to put a bit more effort into decent bus connections, not only here but all over the countryside they seem to lack all of that, even in major tourist spots. This wonderful church can be seen from the highway and it is worth doing a deviation to view it from nearby.
