-A live show from the Middle Ages
Saturday: 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
Attended the yearly tournament show. Coloful knights and horses. Was a great experience being taken back some hundred years. My personal takeawy: impressed how agile and fast fighters on horses actually are. Military forces on horses (cavalry) must have been the aspiration of rulers in the past, similar to supersonic fighter planes are to today... See more..

- 4.5 Castle Grafenegg (65 reviews)
-Gorgeous castle. Especially for music lovers!
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
This is a really nice castle — stunning on the outside, and beautifully restored on the inside, including a good museum section devoted to classical composers. The only reason it does not get five stars is the limited amount of information in English, and the lack of an audio tour. If you attend the Grafenegg music festival in the summer, the castle is right there. Enjoy!! See more..

- 4.5 Ruine Rauheneck (29 reviews)
-Running or simply hillwalking
Points of Interest & Landmarks
First I made an early morning trail running from the Doblhof area of Baden. It was really pleasant with all the pines in full odor. Then with the kids a few days later on an afternoon walk. It was a lot more enertaining and agreeable than the neighboring Rauhenstein. The ruin itself is in a better shape, especially the stairs climb up within the old (watch)tower. See more..
- 3.5 Katholic Pfarrkirche Hl. Nikolaus (29 reviews)
-Baroque masterpiece
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
The interior of this church is a baroque masterpiece. Forgetting the actual gold and marble, the painted walls are masterfully done and with seeing in their own right. For me it was more interesting than the more austere piaristenkirche up the hill. Loved it. See more..

- 4.5 Burg Rappottenstein (23 reviews)
-Wonderful!!!!
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Rappottenstein is an amazing fortress castle in a land full of them. It is well worth the drive from the Spitz area of the Wachau Valley. Roads are clearly marked - make sure you have a detailed map and directions. It sits well above the valley with magnificent views. It is guided tours only, on the hour, and only in German. Our one fervent wish is that there had been at least a tour transcript on paper available in English as we were so curious and so disappointed that we were unable to understand the tour guide. Wait outside the main door of the castle and promptly on the hour, the door opens and you can go in and buy your tickets and take the tour. No tickets available in the ice cream café nearby. The fortification is incredible with excellent turrets and towers. There is a restaurant inside that is perfect for a special late lunch or dinner - it is very romantic and very unique. See more..

You can find a few interesting things at this area. There was a stone age village, vintage cars exhibition or the Lipizzaner training center. There was the Radetzky Memorial as well, where I took a tour. Our guide was Czech speaking man and the tour took 1,5 hour. The museum was very smal, but there were a few dioramas with hudnreds of tin soldiers, that showed famous battles. There was a park with busts and statues of famous generals and Radetzky tomb. - 4.5 Kartause (14 reviews)
-Incredible piece of history hidden in the heart of the Austrian Alps
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
Explore the stone passageways and stop to pray in the same chapel that was once a 13th century Carthusian Monastery! Walk the holy halls and smell the misty mountains that hug you from all sides. It’s magical, mystical, and downright profound. If you’re there during the school year, be sure to grab a Franciscan University student and hear more about one of the greatest secrets in the world of American higher education. Be sure to finish off your visit with a tall Dünkel bier in the Kartausenkeller and taste the same recipe crafted by the monks from centuries before! See more..

- 4.0 Schloss Krumbach (13 reviews)
-Ausgezeichnete Küche und tolles Ambiente
Saturday: 7:30 AM - 10:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Lookouts • Castles
See more..
- 4.5 Haydn Geburtshaus (12 reviews)
-Small, but interesting tour of a Birth house
Points of Interest & Landmarks
My mother an I requested to come here while visiting relatives in the area. Every time we had visited, they had talked with pride about Haydn being from the area, and many tours of historical sites nearby mention his visits prominently. Visiting the house he was born and raised in was educational. The tour was small because the house was small, however the displays and size of the residence somehow make the legend of the Haydn family more impressive. Seeing how 'normal' the home life was for the family composers make the musical achievements much more impressive. See more..

- 4.0 Grosse Basilika (8 reviews)
-an open air basilica
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
the grosse basilika is an impressive piece of landscape architecture in Austria close to the boarder with the Czech Republic. Impressive large stones form the monument. When you stand on top of the table you see the complete structure. The location is on the right side of road number 5 (Waidhofener strasse) north of Waidhofen an der Thaye in the south east direction of Waidhofen. The entrance to the location is somewhat hidden. We visited this place in August 2014 and it was really worth a detour. When in the Waldviertel, as this area is called, don't miss the Himmelsleiter. See more..
- 5.0 EIBL Jet Tuernitz (8 reviews)
-Great fun
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
Four of us went to this attraction. At first I thought it would be dull and uninteresting but how wrong I was. All of us really enjoyed it. There are brakes so you can control how fast you descend so it is safe for youngsters. The sledges take two people so we frequently saw parent and child in a sledge. The scenery was fantastic and there are nearby attractions for young children so there is plenty to do. It was a hot day so we were very appreciative of the small restaurant on site which sold ice creams. Good fun for adults and children alike See more..
- 4.0 Burgruine Dobra (7 reviews)
-Great views, interesting ruins
Points of Interest & Landmarks
As others have said, keep going up the narrow road to find free parking next to the castle. Buy your tickets and then scan them to get through the turnstile. There is a cafe inside and toilets both outside and in. There are stairs so expect to do some climbing. We were not offered an audio guide so we didn't even realize we could get one. Got some great photos and enjoyed our visit. See more..

- 5.0 Weingut Fred Loimer (5 reviews)
-Special wine tasting
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
After reading about Loimer wines in a Travel and Leisure article, we decided to make a stop during our visit to the Wachau Valley. Loimer is located just about 20 minutes north, in the Kamptal region. We tasted several Gruner Veltliner and Reislings that we could get in the U.S. Without exception, the wines were excellent. The modern setting was lovely, and the visit was personal with the Loimer family itself. You must make a booking - I just sent an email and got a quick response. Loimer is proud of its biodynamic agriculture practices and the result is some very stunning white wines. Highly recommend. See more..

- 4.0 Kreuzbichlkirche (4 reviews)
-Geteilte Kirche
Points of Interest & Landmarks
See more..

-Idyllische Kellergasse
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Scenic Walking Areas
See more..

- 4.5 Schloss Rossatz (3 reviews)
-Great base to travel around the Wachau
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
Very central location, well cleaned and very friendly reception by Mrs Lorenz. Fresh flowers and well stocked regarding kitchenware etc. even shower gel etc were supplied. A few minor quirks (old doors and inefficient heating) are gladly accepted for that. The view is spectacular: you can see the ruins and village of Dürnstein from the kitchen. A small supermarket with all necessities and fresh bread is right opposite the castle, parking lot is not five minutes by foot. Opening hours are somewhat limited but can certainly be managed. Poldis Kaffee Eckerl (Café) is next to the supermarket and always well visited by locals. Around the corner is a local Heuriger and the larger 'Rossatz 8'. Mautern and Krems are easily and quickly reachable by car. But watch out for the narrow roads in the villages! See more..
