Train lovers - this is a must
OK, I'm a train nerd, I love steam, in the UK I spend days going up and down heritage lines. Here there isn't the same passion but this museum gets close. From Vienna take line S1, Ganserndorf, to Silberwalt, about 20 minutes, the museum is a short walk from the station. Go on Sunday if you possibly can, more is happening. Open 10:00 to 17:00. There's an incredible range of 19th to late 20th century trains and rolling stock, much of it able to raise steam or in process of renovation. On Sunday you can get a short run in a heritage diesel shunting loco, there's a little play railway to amuse the kids, there's a shed of restored electric, steam and diesel locos and many "dormant" engines rusting majestically awaiting restoration. There's also a canteen with excellent beer and wurst inna bun. Great day out for train lovers if you've got time, make time!

Feel the locomotive breath
Steam locomotive enthusiasts will be real satisfied. See and feel the humanitarian thinking of engineers how to make traveling easy in the past.

interested in railways?
Had a fascinating day out at this railway museum. An amazing amount of engines and rolling stock parked on miles of track. We were able to wander around at will and climb on several of the exhibits. As it was a 'steam day' we also had a brilliant hair raising footplate ride! The lady at the ticket office spoke excellent english. The lineside vegetation was interesting as well - lots of wild flowers. If thinking of going from Vienna (which is what we did) then take the underground u-bahn to Florisdorf (end of line on u6) then catch a regional train on the s-bahn line s1 to Silberwald (If you get off here rather than Strasshof it is a shorter walk to the museum).Turn left out of the station and walk along the road approx a quarter of a mile looking for a turning on the right- Sillerstrasse- then carry on for approx another quarter of a mile and it's on the right (there are a couple of signs on the way)
