Saturday: Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • History Museums
    Old Capitol Museum image
COVID-19 UPDATE: Based on information provided by the Mississippi Department of Health about the coronavirus epidemic, we are temporarily closed until further notice. Jackson’s oldest building, the Old Capitol is home to a museum exploring the history of the site when it was the seat of Mississippi government from 1839 to 1903. The Old Capitol was the site of some of the state’s most significant legislative actions, such as the passage of the 1839 Married Women’s Property Act, Mississippi’s secession from the Union in 1861, and the crafting of the 1868 and 1890 state constitutions. The building is a National Historic Landmark, and one of the country’s premier examples of Greek Revival public architecture. When it was built in 1839, the massive limestone exterior, copper dome, and grand interior spaces made the Old Capitol the most distinguished building in Mississippi. See more..

    Tupelo Veteran's Museum image
The best part of the museum— aside from the amazing number of interesting artifacts— is Mr. Tony Lute. Friendly and courteous, Mr. Lute seems to know about everything in the museum, but he doesn’t overwhelm you with talk—- just makes himself available to answer any questions , tell an interesting story, or drop an amazing fact. We are senior citizens who took a 13 year old boy and 7 year old girl. Both of them enjoyed the museum so much, and, of course, we did. Everyone should visit! See more..

This is a great stop to stretch your legs and learn about native son Jim Henson - the genius behind Kermit The Frog and The Muppets. There's a lot of Kermit memorabilia and an original Kermit The Frog "Muppet" donated from The Henson family. Be sure to venture down the street and see the Rainbow Connection Bridge, with the historic roadside marker. Henson played in this creek as a kid, along with childhood friend, Kermit - who most believe is the namesake for "the frog." See more..

turned off of RT 49 on Civil Rights Journey to see see Boyle Country Store, the beginning of that awful day of Emmett Till's murder. Decided to head over to museum to learn more and glad we did. Small place deep in the Delta operated by people dedicated to sharing the true stories of people living there now and before. There is so much that happened in the south that I never learned in school. Was glad to meet Mayor Johnny B Thomas who worked to open museum as his work to advocate for truth and justice is inspiring. Our week of traveling through the south has come to an end and I feel we only scratched the surface of learning about the struggles, resilience, and courage of African Americans. See more..

You must stop here before going to the Brice Crossroads battlefield area. There is a video that will help you understand the battle. The staff is very helpful and if you had an ancestor that fought during this battle, they can look them up on their database and give you all kinds of information about your ancestor. I was thrilled to find information I had previously been unable to find about my great-grandfather. You will get a printout to take with you. If you prefer to research on your own, there is a database kiosk in the lobby that you can use to find your ancestor. Besides the video, there are exhibits and artifacts. But talk to the staff, they can tell you lots of interesting stories. See more..

    Union County Heritage Museum image
My daughter and I visited the Union County Heritage Museum on an early Wednesday morning. We enjoyed the quality of the exhibits- the taxidermy collection was nice as well as the collection of local fossils and arrowheads. Although small, the museum is nicely organized and artifacts professionally displayed. There was a nice interior area of interesting historical interest as well. Don’t miss the outdoor gardens in the back!! The Faulkner gardens are not only lovely but also include plants referenced in his novels with plaques noting the quotes to match. There are several outbuildings, including a store, blacksmithing area, farming area, jail, doctor’s office, outhouse (let the kids see the catalog toilet paper!) and twin car. Don’t forget to ring the huge plantation bell! We spent a nice hour and a half at this donation-only museum. See more..
  27. 4.5 Marshall County Historical Museum (14 reviews)
    - Great history, interesting artifacts
    History Museums
    Marshall County Historical Museum image
It's really hard to rank museums when you have the Smithsonian, other museums in big cities, then little gems like this in "Small Town, USA". This doesn't have the "glitz and glamor" of big city museums, but it's got some great artifacts, interesting information, and a lot of heart. When you start out, you are somewhat overwhelmed by the hodge podge arrangement of everything, but you get use to it and it becomes quite enjoyable. We stayed for 2.5-3 hours and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks to Jennifer for helping us get in the Yellow Fever church and for finding and returning my glasses. If you are in the area, definitely check this out. If Warren Buffett can support it, you know it must be worth going to - he helped them put in an elevator. See more..
  28. 5.0 Old Tishomingo County Courthouse Museum (13 reviews)
    - Wonderful Museum
Saturday: Spent 1-2 hours History Museums
Old Tishomingo County Courthouse Museum image
The Old Tishomingo County Courthouse is a striking example of Romanesque Architecture with Second Empire style influences. This courthouse is the reason why Iuka is known widely as the “Marriage Capital” with over 44,000 marriage licenses issued in the years when Mississippi had no three-day waiting period for licenses. The courtroom on the second floor is much the same as it was when John M. Stone, a resident of Iuka and Mississippi’s longest serving Governor, supervised its construction and when the county’s first legal hanging happened here years ago. The courthouse was built in 1870 and is on the National Register of Historic Places; it is a Mississippi Historical Landmark. Strategically situated in Iuka only a few miles from the AL and TN borders on Hwy 72 between Huntsville and Memphis and minutes away from the Tennessee River and Natchez Trace, it is poised to be a tourist gateway and welcome center into Northeast MS. An urban farmstead, it was the home of early Jackson mayor, James H. Boyd, his wife Eliza, and their six children and numerous grandchildren. The house, with original and period furnishings, and its Victorian gardens transport the visitor to 19th-century life in Jackson. Historically this is such an important museum house. LQC Lamar was a great Mississippian who, after the Civil War which he helped spawn, became a great American. The restoration work is brilliant - and the story that is told by the displays in the various rooms is both moving and instructive. Lamar went from apologist for slavery to atoner for past wrongs and a moral standard for all of us. An important visit for anyone interested in American history. City of Jackson Fire Museum image
The place doesn't have a lot to see; about 5-6 fire engines and some historical placards. That being said, Sherrie, who led the your, was very nice. She helped my son (6) slide down the pole, she gave us info about the old fire trucks and equipment and she let him get up in a truck and blow a horn. She also gave my son a plastic fire hat. We were lucky that the fire fighters weren't busy; they let us tour their living spaces and see the new fire truck. Overall, my son had a great time and you can't beat free entertainment! See more..

    - Disappointed. Call Before You Go
    History Museums
    Ida B. Wells Museum image
I became well-versed in Ida B. Wells after studying her in journalism graduate school so I was excited when I saw highway markers pointing to this museum. We followed the highway signs for miles after checking the hours online. After getting off the main road, we wound through the countryside, past Rusk College and through the small town. Arriving at the home at 4 p.m. on a Wednesday, one hour before the posted closing time, I was disappointed that no one was in attendance. I rang the bell several times, but no lights were on. From what I could tell peeking through the front door glass, the foyer of the restored Victorian home contains interesting displays. I was very disappointed and hope the city, state or foundation can hire someone or change the hours. I would have called the posted number but it seemed useless since it was only an hour until the posted closing time. Park in the rear of this stately home, after your verify someone will be there.
