I just started riding in December. So I was concerned about 40 miles. So the first day we parked in Sumrall and rode to Prentiss wow i did 51 miles. It's not any big hills just a few slow inclines that you can feel when your tired. Beautiful farm land and the best was no traffic coming up behind you. You have to cross and few highways but its all posted so you can see them. Plenty of restrooms and rest stops and a few raindrops with shelters incase it rains. I didn't have a problem with the 51 miles the first day. Second day we rode from Hattiesburg to Sumrall and back around 30 miles. I do believe the easier route is from Prentiss to Hattiesburg. The path is well taken care of ...and if you need any parts etc for your bike go by and see the nice people at Hattiesburg bycycle center on 38th avenue. They were a big help to us. We are already looking at when we can go back. See more..

I am training for the Detroit marathon and was in town for a family reunion. Did not want to run in the streets so I google trails in the area and this popped up. Amazing rail to trail in great condition with plenty of parking. A lot of tree cover to keep you out of the sun. I went early about 6:30am each day and there were others already there which is nice to see. Not use to that Mississippi summer heat tho it was a tough run with 100% humidity. See more..

    - A wonderful trial trail that is only going to get better

I biked the length of this trail, from New Albany to Houston. It's got great amenities and more are being added (both by local governments and the private sector), including places to stay. I admit I didn't expect to find 2 40+-mile trails in Mississippi, and I wouldn't miss this one. One thing that could make it better would be signposted bike-friendly road routes to Tupelo, Oxford and the Natchez Trace. And don't forget the signs pointing us out-of-towners to ice cream and other places to stop and spend some money! See more..
  6. 4.0 Fontainebleau Nature Trail (19 reviews)
    - A great place to take a walk.

My husband and I spent about an hour at here, walking the trails, enjoying the vegetation and water of Davis Bayou, and listening to the birds. The signage helped us understand what we were looking at, and things to watch for. I was amazed at all the palm bushes and ferns we saw, what I think of as houseplants were growing in abundance in the wild here. See more..
  7. 4.5 Bailey Woods Trail (19 reviews)
    - Pleasant hike from the University Museum to Wm Faulkner's Home
    Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails
    Bailey Woods Trail image
This trail, with some minor relocation has existed for years. It leads from the University of Mississippi Museum parking lot to William Faulkner's home in Oxford. While only a little more than a quarter of a mile, you walk from the bustling university campus through Bailey's Woods. While there the other day, I happened upon three deer, numerous songbirds, and saw tracks from a racoon. A nice way to break up a visit to a busy college campus. Don't neglect to stop at the museum, it contains an eclectic collection of items ranging from dressed fleas, Greek and Roman antiquities and current exhibitions. See more..

    - Gorgeous trail

About a 30 minute drive north from ocean springs, easy to find. It’s a really long trail, out and back. I went about three miles in before turning back. The trail is mostly packed sand with a carpet of pine needles and dotted with pine cones. It’s plenty wide and the bridges were all well enough maintained. The trail is mainly flat and crisscrosses some service roads. After a mile in you can’t hear the road noise. It was a pretty sun dappled day with crisp clean Mississippi air. I will return! I was told by some locals that it had recently reopened due to damage from hurricane zeta. See more..

I will bring binoculars for birds next time. Enjoyed hiking around the lake on the Lake Thoreau Loop Trail. Had to detour around mud or water several times. Hours: 8-5, Open for USM activities on weekdays. Open to public on weekends. Confusing to find - from W 4th St. take Lake Thoreau Rd and turn Right on "Thoreau" (see photo). This street is not shown on Google Maps. Turn right at white sign. Down a quarter of a mile. See more..

Love this lodge. Everything you need and the best folks ever.the staff couldn’t have done more for us. Food is delicious and plentiful. Joshua and his team made our stay extra special. After driving 20 minutes through farmland, we arrived at the boardwalk. It was a sunny morning and the light filtering through the trees was just beautiful! You will want to use bug repellent as there were a few mosquitoes and no see ums. So glad we made this a stop on our road trip. See more..

  13. 3.0 Marathon Lake Recreation Area (1 review)
    - One of the 'Most Secluded' camps of Bienville National Forest
    Hiking Trails
    Marathon Lake Recreation Area image
One of several campsites of the Bienville National Forest, its one of the most secluded and isolated campsites available. Beautiful during spring especially. Not your regular run of the mill park simply because its so out of the way. If your looking for some quiet time alone away from all the noise this is it. It has a simple walk around trail that surrounds the lake and circles back to the camp area. Also has a sand beach to enjoy a jump into the lake! Overall a small cozy park See more..
  14. 5.0 Arkubutla (1 review)
    - South Abutment Campground
State Parks • Hiking Trails • Dams
    Arkubutla image
We camped at the COE South Abutment Campground for 3 nights. This is a very clean and well maintained campground. The COE has 3 campgrounds on the lake with electricity and full hookups and several without. The reservation system was out of order so it was first come only. They have a few long term campers who I assume work at the local casinos. Most are there for only a couple days. The lake water is muddy because it comes from the Mississippi River as part of the COE flood control. It is still very pretty and the lake has great fishing. There are a couple hiking trails nearby and also bike only trails and a large frisbee golf course. The hiking trails are only partly marked with blazes but it would be difficult to get lost. There were a lot of folks fishing at the nearby outlet channel and they were catching large crappies. There were a lot of fishing boats leaving from the nearby launch each morning but I didn’t see anyone fishing from the lakeshore. The sunrise over the lake was spectacular every morning. The campsites are spread out and you can get one with water views. There are big trees around most of them. The bathhouse was clean and heated which was nice for the cold nights we were there. They don’t sell firewood in the park but you can buy it on Hwy 304 north of the park. The park office has a volunteer during the day with a lot of brochures and she is very friendly but other than her and the person cleaning the bathhouses we didn’t see any employees around. Paying for your site is done using an envelope at the campground and it’s cash only. If you have a Senior or other Federal camp it’s half price. The park brochure is hard to read and identify the hiking trails and they don’t have printed hiking maps so check the park web page in advance because they have them there. See more..
  15. 4.0 Wolf River Marsh Coastal Preserve (1 review)
    - Short woods walk to the Wolf River
Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
From the parking area on Bells Ferry Road, you can walk 3/4 mile to the bank of the Wolf River. The walk itself is flat and tends to be muddy, with some sections or boardwalk. There are two sections of trail. The boardwalk of one side was damaged badly enough, we decided not to take my 77 year old mom across the broken boards. We stuck to the other side and had a muddy walk to a beautiful river with a bench to enjoy the view. It looks like a great spot for fishing. In May, the mosquitoes were ferocious, and you should not even think of going without bug spray. We went on a day when the winds were whipping up the coast, and this inland escape was just what we needed. See more..
