Forks of the Roads Monument image
The Forks of the Road was the second largest slave market in the south. It is preserved with some descriptive signs and markers, and a very moving concrete monument encasing, the implements of slavery. We enjoyed the beautiful tour homes, but one should remember upon whose backs they were built, and honor their strength and involuntary sacrafice. See more..

The Civil Rights Monument, a life-like bronze statue of James Meredith, is located on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford, behind the historic Lyceum administration building and in front of the J.D. Williams Library. The statue, sculpted by Rod Moorehead, who owned the Southside Gallery in Oxford from 1993 to 1997, was unveiled in 2006, fully 44 years after Meredith became the first African-American to become a student at Ole Miss. It symbolizes the integration of the university in 1962 and honors Meredith and those who fought to give all citizens equal educational opportunities in the South. The statue is engraved with the words: Courage, Knowledge, Opportunity and Perseverance. See more..

  12. 3.0 Crooked Feather (1 review)
    - A Scavenger Hunt
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
The map is incorrect---the 30-foot statue is JUST BEFORE you go over the Bay Bridge. It took us several trips over and around to discover how to reach it. It is the 17th of 74 statues that Peter Toth carved as part of the Trail of the Whispering Giants. He placed at least one in EVERY state, and some people apparently look for each state's representative. The Mississippi Statue deteriorated, and since the City Fathers/Mothers were unsure if Peter Toth was still alive to fix it, they hired Thomas King, a local sculptor, to reproduce it. This is a FUN bit of history with a good, although incomplete story, and a challenge to locate. Takes about five minutes to walk around it, but there is a caboose nearby that you can also view and wonder WHY these two things are adjacent. See more..
