This park has a beautiful trail overlooking miles of long leaf pines, small creeks and marshland. The trail is open in the daylight hours, but the indoor visitor center has different hours due to COVID. This place is just a few minutes from interstate and is definitely worth trying to catch a peek of the endangered Cranes that nest there. Dog friendly. My only wish is that there were more trails, as the one we took only took around a 20 minute walkSee more..
A little hard to find but glad we were persistent. Yes, it really is 13 miles down Pinckney Ln. Call or check website for when it is open. There’s a $4 fee on the honor system. Put your money in an envelope and put in available box and rip off the parking tag and put in your car. My husband stayed behind while I hiked and said ranger did come by and check the vehicles. I loved this hike and was able to make it to the 1st 2 waterfalls due to limited time. The hike is very steep at times. At one point I commented to others, “ I may need to get a running start to get up that hill”. It’s a beautiful nature area though and I’m so glad I made the effort. Restrooms are on site.See more..
4.5Red Bluff(30 reviews) - Mississippi Must See!!! Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Geologic Formations
Amazingly beautiful! Highly recommend going to Red Bluff. There are tons of trails and the scenery is gorgeous. If you're not much of a hiker the entrance to the outlook on both sides is a short walk from the parking areas. This place is great for day trips and I've seen people camping for overnight stays. I would recommend bringing snacks. We discover something new each time we go.It is posted as private property but locals say the owner lives out of state and allows visitors. There are no trash cans so please bring a trash bag and dispose of trash properly. The trash takes away from the natural beauty.See more..

4.0JP Coleman State Park(28 reviews) - Wonderful getaway Spent More than 3 hours Marinas • State Parks • Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas
My husband spent the weekend at this beautiful park. We have stayed in the cabins several times, but decided to try the motel room for this visit. The room had 2 queen beds, full size refrigerator and stove, microwave, sink, dishes, coffee pot, and table with 4 chairs. We also had a wonderful balcony with a view of the water. There are 16 motel rooms and all are on the second floor- no elevator. There are also townhouses available. There is plenty of parking. We had our bass boat and there was no problem with parking boats and trailers. The marina is within sight of the motel. This is a fisherman's paradise with largemouth and smallmouth bass. Pickwick Lake is located on the Tennessee River. This park is about 12 miles from the town of Iuka, MS. I highly recommend this park, especially if you like to fish.See more..

4.0McClain Safari(24 reviews) - A wild afternoon Nature & Wildlife Areas
We paid our entrance fee and headed down the self driving tour. Our first stop was for a cup of food for the animals, we opted to purchase a second cup and were so glad we did. We needed more! Entry into the animal area is like running a gauntlet. The most eager animals are waiting just across the cattle gate. They are not shy and come straight up to you. Be sure to hold tight or one will eat all your food and take your cup. We had a great time visiting with so many different species in each of the three areas we drove. There is also a petting zoo with more animals to feed. I would highly recommend for anyone who likes animals.See more..
4.5Thacker Mountain Rail Trail(9 reviews) - Peaceful well maintained Spent 2-3 hours Biking Trails • Nature & Wildlife Areas
Also known as the whirlpool. This is the old rail line of the Mississippi Railroad. 3 miles long with multiple off shoots. Along the way is a historical marker for the Buckner's Trestle train wreck (x2 train wrecks). This is a popular trail, Parking can be a premium item, but despite being popular and well used, you can go for a long time without seeing anyone. Very relaxing. As you would expect with a rail trail, it's pretty flat.See more..

My wife and I traveled here this past March, the weather was fantastic and really enjoyed what we found. This NWR is located in SW Mississippi near the town of Sibley. It was established to conserve the integrity of a dynamic bottomland hardwood forest ecosystem in the Lower Mississippi River Valley. This refuge gives you the opportunity to get out and walk (many walking trails, view the wildlife and enjoy the outdoor air. We very much enjoyed the beautiful visitor center and interacting with the staff. The refuge offers many other things to do like hunting, fishing and canoeing/kayaking. We utilized some of the photo blinds for photographic opportunities. Bring your family (especially children), binoculars, camera and enjoy what this part of Mississippi has to offer. Wonderful place if you enjoy walking.See more..
5.0Sky Lake Boardwalk(2 reviews) - Gem in the middle of farmland Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
After driving 20 minutes through farmland, we arrived at the boardwalk. It was a sunny morning and the light filtering through the trees was just beautiful! You will want to use bug repellent as there were a few mosquitoes and no see ums. So glad we made this a stop on our road trip. See more..
As with other Mississippi parks, this one had terrible maps and a lack of signage. Once again, the overwhelming majority of the park information pamphlet was about hunting with 1 illy detailed broad map included as an afterthought at the back. This one also had a lack of detailed maps of the park including detailed trail information in the brochure. As a visitor, it seemed abundantly clear that refuges in Mississippi are considered mostly of value for hunting, not for wildlife observation or hiking. As such, making sure the parks contain adequate maps and signage for visitors who may want to hike/observe wildlife is not a priority. This park was also plagued by road closures and had hardly any wildlife to be seen. This could have to do with storms and lots of hunting.See more..
4.0Wolf River Marsh Coastal Preserve(1 review) - Short woods walk to the Wolf River Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails From the parking area on Bells Ferry Road, you can walk 3/4 mile to the bank of the Wolf River. The walk itself is flat and tends to be muddy, with some sections or boardwalk. There are two sections of trail. The boardwalk of one side was damaged badly enough, we decided not to take my 77 year old mom across the broken boards. We stuck to the other side and had a muddy walk to a beautiful river with a bench to enjoy the view. It looks like a great spot for fishing. In May, the mosquitoes were ferocious, and you should not even think of going without bug spray. We went on a day when the winds were whipping up the coast, and this inland escape was just what we needed.See more..

It was FABULOUS! A hidden treasure.See more..
