We stopped by on Sunday (10-23-22) and it was a great day. Taking pictures and learning the history of Vicksburg through the murals was a beautiful experience. 4. 3.5 The Crossroad (275 reviews)
    - Worth stopping
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    The Crossroad image
Would you sell your soul to the devil in exchange for musical success? Well that, according to legend, is what Delta blues musician and songwriter Robert Leroy Johnson, one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, did one dark and mysterious night. It is not known where that legendary event supposedly took place but the town of Clarksdale, the "Home of the Blues", has staked a claim to the spot by placing a giant guitar where Highway 61 (the 'blues highway') crosses Highway 49 (the road to Parchman Prison, which features in many blues songs). Worth stopping for a photo but be careful of traffic. If you want a snack, there are refreshments outlets nearby. See more..

    McRaven House image
My daughter and I went to McRaven house after reading about it online. While we waited for the next tour we were given the chance to look around the outside. Once the tour started the two tour guides were beyond amazing. They were so full of history facts and appreciation for history it made for the best tour I’ve ever had. I’ve been to a lot of historical sites but this tour was so fun and engaging I couldn’t help but enjoy every bit of information I learned. Normally I tune out and just look at the artifacts but this one had me wanting to soak up every bit of information. Even my daughter was so excited to tell everyone she knew about all the cool facts she learned. I definitely recommend anyone who loves history or a bit of ghost stories to go on this tour. 13. 5.0 Choctaw Hall (115 reviews)
    - Best House Tour Ever.
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Choctaw Hall image
If in Natchez and on the mansion circuit, do not pass up Choctaw Hall. This is the only tour we have ever been on where the lifelong owner gives the tour. And what a wonderful tour it was. Mr. Garner, a descendant of the builders of the Hall, was a charming southern gentleman, interesting and knowledgable about every aspect of the home and its vast contents, and the way of life there from the 19th century to date. We spent the first 40 minutes of the tour in the gentleman's living room, sitting as guests and not tourists, listening to Mr Garner's personal and family story. Then on to a tour of this beautiful home. No docents, no ropes blocking rooms, just a new friend showing off his home and life. See more..

Forks of the Roads Monument image
The Forks of the Road was the second largest slave market in the south. It is preserved with some descriptive signs and markers, and a very moving concrete monument encasing, the implements of slavery. We enjoyed the beautiful tour homes, but one should remember upon whose backs they were built, and honor their strength and involuntary sacrafice. See more..
  15. 4.0 The Dentzel Carousel (91 reviews)
    - Beautifully restored and in working order
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    The Dentzel Carousel image
My friend and I visited the Carousel two weeks ago while visiting Meridian for a weekend together. The carousel is located inside a carousel house and has been restored beautifully. It is in working order and can be riden for $.50. The staff are very knowledgable and super friendly. The route our GPS used for getting us to the carousel was a bit questionable but once we arrived we were happy to see such a beautiful park. We spent several hours in the park while being in awe at the ducks in the pond and all over. There is a lot of history all over including the old gazebo. Park is well maintained. See more..
  16. 4.5 Hurricane Katrina Memorial (79 reviews)
    - Free Hurricane Katrina Memorial
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Hurricane Katrina Memorial image
The Hurricane Katrina Memorial is located in downtown Biloxi. It is a beautiful tribute to the lives lost during Hurricane Katrina. My 14-year-old son and I visited it after eating lunch at the Half Oyster Shell House. The memorial lists the names of the locals who perished during Hurricane Katrina. There is also a collection of items (next to the memorial) donated by people who survived Hurricane Katrina. I would recommend anyone visiting Biloxi to take five minutes out of their schedule and visit this sad piece of history. See more..

    - Hotel of yesteryear
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
Mount Locust Inn & Plantation image
The park did a wonderful job of recreating the feeling of life here at this inn. Walking inside, you get a strong image of the rather spartan living conditions, yet recognize all the same essentials of life that we look for today while traveling. I think I enjoyed ringing the bell the most! Given there is little to see (besides trees) or do on the parkway, this is a very easy and quick stop if in the area. See more..

  20. 4.0 Round Island Lighthouse (45 reviews)
    - A gem of history
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Lighthouses
    Round Island Lighthouse image
If you are in Pascagoula on a Fri or Sat stop by and see this lighthouse. It is on land and there is someone there that will tell you the wonderful history about it. The best part is I paid $3.00 for my grandson and I to go in it and walk to the top and had a great tour guide to tell us all about it. He did not want to go but when we left he told me he was glad we came there. He thought it was cool to hear about it. The only down side is there is no parking there but I have seen people park on the side of the road. We walk down to the pier that is close by and walked to the lighthouse. The walk gave us a chance to share our experience about going inside of it. I was told there are plans to put parking and a visitor center on the grounds, but that is down the road. So if you are in the area, come by and check it out. You will not be disappointed. See more..

  22. 4.0 Port Gibson, Mississippi (40 reviews)
    - Port Gibson A Small Mississippi Town
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Port Gibson, Mississippi image
Port Gibson, MS. is a small town that played a part in the Civil War. Close to Port Gibson is Grand Gulf military park. There the Union defeated the confederates which led to the eventual fall of Vicksburg. Port Gibson has a nice little downtown area and town square which features the Claiborne County courthouse. When we visited there was not much going on and it looked like some of the businesses were not open. Not many restaurants to choose from. We did hear about 61 Fish House, but it was pickup only. We walked around briefly and then continued our trip along the Natchez Trace Parkway. See more..

What an incredible place and replica of the actual Vietnam war memorial from DC. You truly will not be disappointed See more..
  29. 4.5 Vicksburg Bridge (22 reviews)
    - Cool spot - Don't skip it. Nice views
    Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges
    Vicksburg Bridge image
This is a very cool stop. Make it a point to pull off the interstate as you cross the Mississippi River between Louisiana and Mississippi. There is a historical marker for the Vicksburg Siege on May 16, 1863 when Ulysses Grant's army surrounded John Pemberton's. The Confederacy surrendered on July 4 of the same year. The whole stop takes about 15 minutes. It's a single building with restrooms and an incredible view of the dual bridges over the Mississippi river. Cannons are set up below the building overlooking the river. It's just cool. You probably need a restroom break from the highway, so why not stop and take in the view. See more..
  30. 4.5 Natchez Bluffs and Under-the-Hill Historic District (22 reviews)

Natchez Bluffs and Under-the-Hill Historic District image
Short staffed and the people working did an awesome job! Hannah was our server and she was remarkable! The young man at the greeter station was friendly and wanted us to know the menu had changed and was limited. Still plenty of choices!!! I had the blackened redfish and my husband had the platter. We arrived at about 4pm and the place was almost full—10 minutes later and the wait was a line outside. Enjoyed our meals. The $10 rum drink was very small for the price, but tasty! See more..
  31. 4.5 Robert Johnson's Grave (21 reviews)
    - Memorable Visit!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Robert Johnson's Grave image
The story of the Delta Blues legend Robert Johnson and his unique place in American culture is incredibly unique and truly fascinating! This cemetery is small, so his grave is easy to find at the back of the cemetery (the other grave markers are interesting to view too!) and a very weathered Blues Trail marker at the church/cemetery entrance is quite informative. There are flowers, notes and other items scattered around his grave (and several discarded liquor bottles!). His grave is located under a giant pecan tree, is quite peaceful and beautiful - and all four members of our visiting group felt a positive and somewhat mysterious "spiritual vibe" while visiting his grave. This is definitely a "must see' while visiting the historically rich and fascinating Greenwood, Mississippi area - so much history for anyone interested in Blues Music & Civil Rights! See more..
  32. 4.5 Palestine Gardens (18 reviews)
    - A beautiful "little" roadside gem...
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Gardens
    Palestine Gardens image
Yes it's WAY off the beaten path, but this beautiful "little" roadside gem is really worth the trip!! This is a scale model of the Holy Land constructed in the 60's by Reverend Walter Harvell Jackson. The current owner, Mr. Don Bradley, took us on a guided tour through the park... along the way he explained how all the cities tied to together and shared many stories. His combination of personal testimony and Biblical truth make him and the park an amazing witness. It was a really great time! Check out their webpage: http://www.palestinegardens.org/ See more..
  33. 2.5 Oprah Winfrey's Birthplace (18 reviews)
    - Oprah needs to sprinkle some cash here
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Oprah Winfrey's Birthplace image
Oprah’s huge star status warrants more investment into a replica of her home, better signage and road improvements. Maybe nobody has much interest in it. It was interesting to see where she came from. Like Elvis, she was dirt poor and made her way in this world. As you drive down the road she lived as a young girl, you simply come to a sign which is difficult to read. The road is as rough as the neighborhood. It’s safe, but poor as heck. The church and cemetery are interesting, we speculate that the fenced area in the cemetery is where Oprah’s relatives are buried (not really sure who would be interested in this). Kinda fun, a photo opportunity, but don’t go far out of your way. See more..
  34. 5.0 Lyceum-The Circle Historic District (16 reviews)
    - Civil Rights Must See
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Lyceum-The Circle Historic District image
As mentioned in a previous review, this is the oldest building at Ole Miss. This is where James Meredith registered for university in 1962 and is a must see. The statue of Meredith is located just behind the Lyceum and when my wife and I visited from Edmonton, Alberta at the end of January, there quite a few students from different ethnic backgrounds sitting around the commemorative pillars. What a change from the day that Meredith registered and thousands of people rioted in Oxford. (My wife and I are old enough to remember this). The statue is easy to find if you are staying in the downtown area. When you enter the university, there is university employee who will give you directions to the statue and advise you where to park. This is a beautiful university to walk around. See more..

    Woodall Mountain image
Woodall Mountain is not much of a mountain compared to states with higher elevation. The gravel road to the top is usually in decent shape but sometimes rutted. There is only one direction that is clear enough for much of a view. Most of the top is surrounded by trees and undergrowth. See more..
  37. 4.0 E.E. Bass Cultural Arts Center (11 reviews)
    - A Beautiful Surprise!
Saturday: Points of Interest & Landmarks
E.E. Bass Cultural Arts Center image
We stopped here expecting to view some regional art. We found that and so much more! First of all, the building is a school from the 1960's, just like where I once attended. I thought all of these schools would have been torn down ages ago. Between the nostalgia of the building and the wonderful regional art, you will enjoy this place...But...down the hall and around the corner is a CAROUSEL...that works! We jumped on the horses and the carousel is still operational...I was giddy and felt completely young again! Don't miss this surprise amongst the charming town. Try to visit in late fall and you will be greeted outside by some magnificent golden Ginko trees. See more..

  39. 3.0 Nanih Waiya (8 reviews)
    - Real and Bogus
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Nanih Waiya image
Please be aware that the mound by the side of the road with the historical marker is not Nanih Waiya. Consider it a "tribute" mound. The tribes who originated in this area hold the actual mound very sacred and discourage visitors. I was fortunate to go there with a family of Native Americans from OK. Explaining who we were, we were directed by a local gentleman to the real mound -- from which you can see the "park mound." Both the Choctaws and the Chickasaw do not want tourists or visitors, and you can tell that. Some groups have made pilgrimages from Okla. See more..

  42. 5.0 Bryant's Grocery Marker (5 reviews)
    - Bryant's Grocery Store Marker (Emmett Till)
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Bryant's Grocery Marker image
If you appreciate history, particularly the civil rights era this is a must-see stop. Emmett Till was the 14 year old young man who was accused of whistling at Mrs Bryant as he and his cousins were leaving the Bryant Grocery Store. This was in the heart of the Jim Crow era and certain customs were deemed necessary to keep African-Americans in their "place." Once Mrs. Bryant informed her husband of the act, he and small possy arrived at the home of Till's uncle, where he was staying. At gunpoint they took Till and his beating and lynching became a national story. The site has an official marker and designated by the state of Mississippi. It shows the spot were the store was located and references the horrific events which put the Bryant's and Emmett Till in the history books. See more..

This sprawling live oak is so massive, it fills the camera frame. It is located on private property but can be viewed from the car or by standing in the street. We were there following a heavy rainstorm and the branches, as large as trees themselves. touched the ground. The tree is associated with a local legend, but there's no evidence that John Ruskin ever visited Ocean Springs or enjoyed tea in the shade of this tree. It's in the Ruskin Oaks subdivision. Tutwiler Train Depot Site image
The depot is gone, but the rail bed, a concrete slab, and a wall portrait depicting the legendary 1903 encounter between W.C. Handy and an unnamed blues musician make the Tutwiler Train Depot site a special shrine for Delta Blues pilgrims. While in Tutwiler you should also stop at the Tutwiler Funeral Home on Hancock Avenue, from where in 1955 the body of Emmett Till was shipped to his mother in Chicago. See more..
  47. 4.5 The Little Red Schoolhouse (4 reviews)
    - Interesting Short Stop

    The Little Red Schoolhouse image
We found The Little Red Schoolhouse by following an attraction sign on I-55. A few miles down the road we saw this beautiful brick building. We were peeking in the windows at the old schoolroom when the caretaker walked over and asked if we'd like to tour the building. He was very informative and showed us around the schoolhouse both downstairs and upstairs. The cornerstone for this building was laid in 1847. The downstairs shows a typical layout for an old school and the upstairs shows a typical layout for a Freemason hall. The caretaker talked to us about the history of the building and the history of The Eastern Star. This was a fun and interesting stop. See more..

  49. 4.5 Cedar Oaks (4 reviews)

The house is amazing. The ladies who care for the house are some of the most gracious, informative people that you will ever meet. This historic home is standing only because for the last two centuries Oxford women have saved it from the ravages of arson and developers. The house is staged with wonderful furnishings and items customary for a Civil War mansion. The lady who gave my family a tour knew everything about the house and Oxford in general She gave me maps which she had marked with other historical sites of Oxford. Previous, historical owners were involved in all aspects of Oxford business and literary society. The connections are fascinating. If you are visiting Oxford, you need to tour the house just to meet the ladies who maintain the mansion, learn about the culture of Oxford, and receive recommendations on what else to visit.
