    - Very Interesting
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
Rohwer Relocation Center National Historic Landmark image
After visiting the museum in McGehee, we really were interested to see the actual location of one of the internment camps. Of course it is mostly farmland now, but there are signs marking some locations. There are buttons to push at each sign with a recording of George Takei (played Sulu in Star Trek) who was interned at Rohwer as a small boy. You can see the smokestack in the distance that was once the infirmary at the camp which gives a visual for just how large the camp was. And there is a small cemetery on site also, with some neat memorials. I'm so glad that this story can be told. It gave lots of good talking points with my kids. See more..

There's the Dallas County Museum and a separate location for the Sports Museum. I hated that I only had time to visit the Sports Museum. It was selected as one of the Arkansas sites for a traveling Smithsonian exhibit, and I wanted to see that plus the exhibits relating to the Sparkman Sparklers and to Bear Bryant. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, and I have no doubt that what I call the "regular" part of the museum would have had equally interesting displays. The museum is not open on Mondays; there is no fee for admission but donations are welcome. See more..

Marks's Mills Battlefield State Park image
Nice picnic spot off Hwy 8. Several picnic tables with grills and a covered pavilion. Lots of shade trees. Room for kids to run around. Mine found a geocache here. This is a small commemorative park, not exactly where the battle took place, but there are signs with information about the skirmish. The actual battle took place just a couple miles away near Marks Cemetery. At that location there are Unknown Soldier headstones, a lovely Nature Trail through the battle site, and more information about the Marks Mills and conflict.
