  1. 4.0 Shuhe Ancient Town (1.163 reviews)
    - Great way to spend an afternoon
Thursday: 7:30 AM - 7:00 PM Historic Sites
    Shuhe Ancient Town image
Shuhe is a small village a couple miles to the north of Lijiang, in Yunnan province. It has similar old architecture as Lijiang with similar places to buy Naxi woven cloth and products from local artisans. A major advantage over Lijiang is that it is relatively unknown so the streets are much less crowded and food and lodging is cheaper. In addition to woven goods, there are stores selling wood carvings, Naxi style pottery and silver filigree jewelry. There was an elderly artist whose paintings were all done with the edge of his thumb producing quite astonishing images. See more..
  2. 4.5 Lugu Lake (889 reviews)
    - go before its all built up
Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Bodies of Water
    Lugu Lake image
great scenery and in these covid times very few tourists. The natural beauty does not disappoint. The human impact is significant - as ever ugly construction every corner - often cheapest possible then left to ruin. Natural vegetation ruined, standard plants then used to replace them. Its sickening this is happening in 2022. There is an airport now nearby See more..
  3. 4.5 Chongsheng Three Pagodas (516 reviews)
    - Take shuttle all the way up and then walk down
Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Architectural Buildings • Observation Decks & Towers
    Chongsheng Three Pagodas image
Impressive architecture with the mountains as backdrop. Not just the three pagodas but temples and the grounds as such are beautifully kept. The lake reflection spot with three pagodas in the background is worth stopping for but make sure you spend enough time exploring the rest! See more..
  4. 4.5 Mufu Palace (454 reviews)
    - very well preserved, a joy to visit
Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Mufu Palace image
Mufu palace lies on the side of the hill holding Lion Rock. The location is very scenic with much vegetation and stone work. The main entrance is from the ancient city southern center where you can get tickets and guides. We entered in the back while coming down from Lion Rock and skipped the guides and front entrance crowds. This place is really wonderful to visit - so many people agree that you will find large crowds during the normal tourist seasons. As much as I liked it though I would recommend that you see it with a guide as we missed much history without one. See more..
  5. 4.5 Yunnan Shaxi Ancient Town (291 reviews)
    - Perfect place for Chinese New Year
Historic Sites • Historic Walking Areas • Scenic Walking Areas
    Yunnan Shaxi Ancient Town image
We were here for Chinese New Year eve and the atmosphere was lovely, with lots of people on the streets setting off firecrackers, children playing and fireworks. I've been to many ancient towns in China, and this was one of my favourites. There are some really quaint bars, restaurants and souvenir shops, and lovely mountain views. Would recommend staying a night here, as the atmosphere in the evening is excellent. There are plenty of hotels/hostels inside the town. Entry is free. The village is located in between Lijiang and Dali. You may wish to combine with a trip to Shibaoshan (石宝山), just 14km away. Name in Chinese: 沙溪古镇 See more..
  6. 4.5 Yuantong Temple (254 reviews)
    - Nice and peaceful scenery
Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites • Religious Sites
    Yuantong Temple image
A 1200 years old temple. Unlike most temples in China, which are built on the ascendant, visitors enter the temple from above and descend along a sloping path, downhill along the central axis, In the mid-way, the "Yuantong Wonderful Realm (圓通勝景坊)" is a majestic archway built by General Wu Sangui (吳三桂) in 1669. Don't miss the exquisite stone carving on the pillars At the center of the temple area, there is a fish pool with the Octagon Pavilion in the middle. Pavilion, three-holes stone bridges, and the green pool creates a beautiful scene. There are numerous scenic spots in the temple. However, I have a special preference on the roof of the side chambers. The wave-like roof edges (due to old age), the reflections, and the green water add radiance and beauty to each other. Amazing! 7. 4.0 Dukezong Ancient Town (247 reviews)
    - Fantastic Day or Night
Thursday: 8:30 AM - 11:00 PM Historic Sites
    Dukezong Ancient Town image
Some ancient towns get too crowded but this one was fine and had great excitement in the air. There is great Tibetan, Yunnan and Western food throughout. Worth walking through in the evening as there is a square where the locals meet to dance and not a ladies dance but a traditional circle dance. Guishan Park is in the middle and there are many inviting shops and hotels. There are many yak items throughout and we heard good things about the yak hot pot. We tried yak cheese momos and some sort of pastry that were very tasty. See more..
  8. 4.0 Lijiang Mural in Baisha Village (209 reviews)
    - Mural and much more
Thursday: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
Lijiang Mural in Baisha Village image
Lieutenant General Chennault (1893-1958), the Commander of the Flying Tigers, wrote in his diary, " The Naxi People who ae living at the foothill of Himalaya Mountain are very brave, bold, nice and helpful. The women are very famous for their handicrafts---silk embroidery." I can add tie die, batik, and wood work to silk embroidery. You can visit any of their workshops. There are street musicians playing Naxi music and you can see local produce and medicinal mushrooms. A bag of freshly steamed chestnuts for 40 cents. And the view of the Snow Mountain simply magnificent. We were there for 3 to 4 hours. Wish we had 3 weeks there learning handicraft, which by the way is offered free. Compared to Lijiand, Baisha is quiet and remains unchanged since the Flying Tiger Days. See more..

    - Quaint + quiet village

    Baisha Ancient Town image
This is a lovely quaint village on the edge of Yulong mountain, 30 mins drive from Lijiang, with tasteful craft shops and coffee shops. We visited on a weekday in January and it was incredibly quiet, didn't feel touristy at all (though I've heard the summer is their peak season). 2 hours is enough. Name in Chinese: 白沙古镇 See more..
  10. 4.0 Kunming Golden Temple (164 reviews)
    - The camellias are in full bloom now
Thursday: 7:30 AM - 6:30 PM Historic Sites
    Kunming Golden Temple image
Great time to visit this peaceful mountain park because the camellias are in full bloom. Will probably last another two or three weeks. I've been here several times before, but always find it tranquil and relaxing. A fine getaway. Logistics are easy: It's at the terminus of several bus lines. #47, #10, #71 and others. Three or four local eateries inside get fired up at around noon. Plenty of selection (I'm talking about basic Yunnan food, not imports or exotics.) Climb the bell tower and ring the small wishing bell. Three bongs costs 5 Yuan. Admission at the main gate (西门) is 30 Yuan for most people. Steep stone steps at the beginning. Might be tough if you had a mobility problem. See more..

    - 2 night stay including a hike to the Sacred Waterfall
Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Yubeng Village image
Did this as part of a food tour with Lost Plate, and it was amazing. Jeeps are the only way in and we stayed at Yubeng Upper Village. Cloud and snow covered the next morning, we set off on a 16km roundtrip hike with our group to the Sacred Waterfall. It was slightly below 0 but with warm clothes, temperatures weren't a problem. Hike was great and there's also plenty of birds to see along the way. Prayer flags everywhere make for great photo ops! The morning of our departure, we finally saw the sky and the peaks of the surrounding mountains, truly awe-inspiring. See more..
  13. 4.0 Jianshui Confucius Temple (79 reviews)
    - Another peaceful afternoon in JianShui
Thursday: 7:00 AM - 6:30 PM Historic Sites • Religious Sites
    Jianshui Confucius Temple image
At the main entrance there is a huge lake and at the end of the lake is the temple. My friends tell me that it used to be a school and there are still reminantes of the tokens boards that the sturdents used to show that they were in attendance. Out the back there is like a mini activities area for kids to do different things (cost involved). That band was good, we could hear them tuning up and sat and listened to them for a while. At the end you are invited into the temple to pray and donate. See more..

At the center of Guandu Old Town located the well-preserved Jingang Pagoda (金剛塔,Vajra Throne Style Pagoda). Dating back to 1458, It is the earliest diamond-throne pagoda in China. The Vajra Pagoda is a stylized version of the Mahābodhi Temple constructed at the site of where the Buddha was enlightened in Bodh Gaya , Bihar State, India. Only six Vajra Pagodas remain the world, among which five are in China. Unlike some other Vajra Pagodas, there are no ornate decorations on the walls of the main structure. - Ancient town (renewed)

    Heshun Hometown image
Don't come expecting a true ancient village or small town that is untouched. The long arm of commercial tourism has reached here, as is the case in most parts of China. If you've been to the "old town" in Lijiang or Pingyao (in Shanxi,) you will be better prepared for what you will find here. There are, however, many peaceful vistas and interesting historical sights, many from WW 2. The rape flowers/weeds were also in full bloom (late February.) They have had four years of drought in much of Yunnan, so they are not tall, but are still rather pretty. Should mention that the famous library was closed for painting and minor repairs the day we were there. Of course plenty of jade and trinkets were for sale beside the streets. Only buy the jade if you know what you are doing. It's possible to spend the night here in a small guest house; lots of choices. You need to speak the language if you opt to do that. See more..

  21. 4.0 Zhoucheng Village (30 reviews)
    - Authentic village
    Historic Sites
    Zhoucheng Village image
We arrived here taking a shared minivan from the North Gate of Dali: we were the only foreigners and nobody spoke English, but we asked the staff from our guesthouse to write in Chinese the name of the village. It was easy. We arrived before lunch and there was the market in the main square: we were the only tourists and no one cared about us. It was very authentic, with women dressed with colourful clothes. Walking uphill you will find a nice buddist temple. There are some women in the street that will try to take you in their yard to show you the tie-dye tecnique and to sell you overpriced clothes and fabrics. Be prepared to bargain over if you want to buy something. See more..

    Yushui Village image
Close to Lijiang, and also known as Jade Water Village, this is a network of winding trails surrounding a series of beautiful pools cascading down the mountain. As you enter the park, you are greeted by elderly Naxi women singing in traditional dress. There are several religious sites at the upper reaches including the Shiluo Temple and a sacred spring. There is also a theater for Naxi music performances and some workshops. Bright Dongba murals expounding a harmonious relationship with nature are also found here. Trails are well marked and photo opportunities abound. See more..

This was my first visit of three to an ethnic minority village and even if I understood their need for money, I felt a bit like I was at the zoo, which made me uncomfortable. The guided tour is, understandably, only in Chinese (my partner translated some of it) and is so-so but not bad. The walk is short but don't go if you are not able-bodied. 31. 4.0 Haba Village (17 reviews)
    - Good stopover en-route to Shangrila from Tiger Leaping Gorge
Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites
    Haba Village image
There is actually a shorter more direct way from Tiger Leaping Gorge to Shangrila. If time permits, highly recommend to take the very scenic Haba way that passes through Haba Village and White Water Terrace. Total journey is about 4-5hrs from Tiger Leaping Gorge. Recommend to stay over at Haba Village for a night to break the journey. It's usually a base for treks up Haba Snow Mountain. But it's still a very nice rustic village just to walk around in. Stayed at Haba Snow Mountain Inn run by a super nice lady of Naxi Tribe who'll cook you anything and share stories with you most enthusiastically. I believe I know everything about her family now. =P See more..
  32. 4.5 Heijing Ancient Town (15 reviews)
    - Great place to visit a beautifully preserved ancient town still like in the past century
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Historic Sites
    Heijing Ancient Town image
We stayed in Heijing ancient town for 3 days at Mr Wu's place in hope of seeing one of Yunnan's best preserved ancient towns without all the tourist traps that come with Lijiang and Dali - and we were very impressed! Going to this place made us feel like we were still in the last century - where donkeys are the local transport (cars are left just outside the ancient town), very friendly merchants selling local products such as dried pomegranate flowers for stir fries (a must try while you are here!), beautiful mountain scenery, and a lot of history and culture to learn about. Recommend you stay overnight at Mr Wu's house, where we were given a very interesting history tour of the place, which is a Ming dynasty courtyard mansion in which little has changed since the days of its previous owners, several generations of a wealthy salt merchant’s family, the last unfortunate member of which – Wu Weiyang – was executed by the communists in 1949. There were four of us who went through the Lao Cai side customs point in about 5 mins. We walked across the bridge and into the Hekou side. I was sweating a lot as I was carrying three backpacks as after Yunnan we were going to Tibet so we had loads of cold clothes. As we walked in the customs officer asked if I was sick so I had to stand on a spot on the floor as she took my temp with a camera. After that all good, bags got x-rayed and then we walked out onto the street in China. It couldn't have been easier. See more..

What makes a picturesque village? This ancient village has all the potential, located at the foothills of Yulong Snow Mountain with narrow endless stone alleys. All the houses were made by Naxi people using unique stones with “Bird Wing Roofs”. Yuhe Lake is beside the village. We went to the Former Residence of Luo Ke and had the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and this beautiful serene beauty. There are donkey rides and souvenir shops. One thing is the tour guide told us don’t buy anything from the villages, we all listened. Happy Travelling! See more..

On the edge of the conurbation is a new temple complex. Take the electric car to the summit. Here you can view the outside of a brand new, super shiny temple. The view is from a distance for now as this place won't be completed until later this year. Still impressive though. Also at the summit is a viewing platform made of glass. Slippers on and you can walk on over it to snap some pix of the view downhill towards a big golden Buddha. The car takes you down to the Buddha so you can take more pix. Then one more trip to see the working heart of the temple before driving to the base for the water splashing demo and the peacock show. A great afternoon out. See more..

Wengding Wa Nationality Gregarious Village image
What an adventure. Leaving Lincang we hired a car and driver for a four hour drive to Cangyuan. Our goal was to visit a Wai people village. You have to hire a car and driver to take you to the village which takes about 45 minutes. The village is authentic and about 250 Wai people live there. You can walk around the village and see how the farming community lives. The government has given incentative for the people to continue to live in the village and preserve their way of life. We were told that the village is about 600 years old. They do not speak English so be sure you have an English speaking tour guide. It is the first place I have been and seen women who have blacken their teeth. We elected to take the local bus back to Lincang. When leaving any part of Southern Yunnan province you will be stopped for a random search of luggage. The government cracks down on smuggling in drugs. But it a great time to rest and buy bottle water. See more..

This will give a good insight on the local life. In Lige a must do is eating the BBQ Pork. See more..

    - The Former Residence of Dr Joseph Rock

Former Residence of Luo Ke image
Even when quite young I read some of the accounts of Joseph Rock concerning the Lijiang region and the Naxi people (whom he calls 'Nakhi'), so it was a thrill to finally visit his former house in the Naxi village of Yuhu. There was a fee for visiting, and we were shown in by an old man who works as the caretaker. The house was bought a number of years ago by a local enthusiast, whose grandfather knew Dr Rock personally. The contents of the house are sparse, and consist largely of old photos of Dr Rock and the Naxi, along with various books published over the years by and about Rock. It is a very peaceful house, and you can easily imagine the Austro-American sitting there working on Dongba manuscripts, or examining and cataloguing local plants. The house bears testimony to a little-known facet of local history. See more..

    - interesting historical spot... to see border patrol and drug police
    Historic Sites • Bridges
    Wanding Brige image
although there isn't much to do in Ruili, i still thought Wanding Bridge was interesting and worthy of visit for someone who's never been to the China-Myanmar border. because i live in a city in southeastern China, i have only seen Chinese border patrol soldiers, Chinese drug police, and illegal immigrants in China in action movies or on television, and this was the place where for the first time i saw all these things in real life... for me it was a reminder that there are places in this country not as safe or developed as the cities in the southeast, and that, at risk of sounding condescending, there are young people devoting themselves in faraway places void of luxuries and comforts keeping this country safe. So i thought it was worth a review on Tripadvisor. In addition, the Wanding bridge is also said to be the crosspoint where Japanese armies were driven out of China at the end of World War II. Lugu is known as the home of the unique Mosuo culture. We visited a village elder's house in Loushui Village arranged by An Peng and Zhou Ma of China Highlights on 19 Apr 2017 (Wed). We received a customary welcoming wine offer and were given a good description of the Mosuo culture and believes. It is an interesting culture ('Kingdom of women', 'Walking marriages' and 'Husband and wife remain in their respective maternal homes') which is uniquely different from where we come from. We were also entertained to a 'Bonfire party' show depicting seeking for blessing and peace ceremony at night. See more..

We started our walk at the Anning Spa Retreat. It was a short walk up the hill, well a bit longer than short. We were going to the temple on the Sunday to have lunch with the Monks. It was pleasant walking up the hill, looking out over Anning through the trees. The temple was kinda busy, with many people coming to have lunch there. Not necessarily with the monks but just to have a picnic style lunch. The temple is not that big and there was new building being constructed up the back. Lunch was good and vegetarian. After lunch we walke back down the road with a 80+ year old chinese woman who does he walk every Sunday. See more..

Interesting attraction showing the governor house which role the area since 400 years ago. It addition to the nice, well preserved building. You can see typical dress of the different tribe in the region, some local weapon that was used, musical instruments and other element that present the life along the history of the region. Just in front of the building there nice place for cafe (which is rare in this area..) See more..

    - Idyllic earthen village

    Chenzi Village image
Chengzi Village is an idyllic rural village built on a hill overlooking lush farmland with mountains in the background. The mainly earthen houses are packed closely together and a distinctive feature is that each roof also functions as a courtyard where grain is processed, fowl kept and other rural activities are conducted. Narrow dirt and stone passageways wind around the hill like a maze, linking the homes and eventually leading to the top where a temple stands. Life appears to be simple and centered around farming and although there were plenty of lively children and older folk, there seems to be less young adults, who have probably decided to work in the cities. There is a serene sense of timelessness as villagers and their animals go about their work in the fields and wisps of cooking smoke hoover over the rooftops. Although the folk here do not seem to be short on food, it might be nice to bring some school material or small toys for the children there. Lovely village. See more..
