Great place to wander around. A good combination of bustling shops and quiet. Many different islets connected by bridges, lotus flowers, and you can even go boating if you wish. There are always many people but it adds to atmosphere of the place, and at night many gather to exercise together, whether in the small exercise sections of the park or running laps around the lake. We took a bus from Lijiang Ancient City for 15 RMB and it took us to the foot of the mountain. Then we took the bus from there up to the Blue Moon Valley. The place was breath-taking. The colour of the water was amazingly stunning. We did not go up the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain as we heard that there was no snow at this time of the year. The Blue Moon Lake was already worth the trip. As it was rainy season, we had brought along our raincoat. It rained and stopped, rained and stopped. We walked around the lake, walking on the jungle side was a very interesting experience. Because of the wet weather, different species of flora and fungi could be spotted along the way. See more..

Great place to explore and get lost in, akin to Venice in terms of narrow streets and car-free environment. Some things to definitely enjoy - 1. Canals - these run throughout the town, go through the back streets (follow the canal path along Qiyi Street) to see more and avoid the crowds. You may bump into locals there whom are very friendly. 2. Roofscape - very interesting and best viewed from Hizi Mount / Lion Hill (the hill to the west of the town with the temple at the top). 3. Courtyards - most houses / inns in the old town have internal courtyards which you can peek into and maybe enter (but ask first if you're not sure). The northern part of town around Yuhe Square can be mobbed in the evenings and is very touristy, complete with McD's, KFC, Pizza Hut et all, so best avoid if you're not into these things. Would be good if the Lijiang authorities clamp down on the bars and clubs pumping loud music. See more..

Very suitable for two to three hours walk during the afternoon, feeling the wind and the sun in your face (use sunscreen). Take a rented scooter from Shangri-La (roughly 30 mins ride) and spend 30 RMB on entrance. Don't ride a horse, just walk yourself. Preferably wear shoes that you don't mind getting dirty or muddy, but if you are careful it's not necessary. Take a camera to take photos of the mountains surrounding the valley and the horses/mules, sheep and yak. See more..

One of the lakes in Pudacuo National Park (the first national park in China). I was there mid of October 2012, and the views are fabulous!! Blue skies, white clouds, great sunshine and beautiful autumn colors. There are eco-buses to take you around the park, and the first stop in the park is Shuodu Lake. You can opt to walk around the lake on a wooden walkway (easy and won't get lost), total distance is 3.3km with lots of photo taking opportunities or continue to the next stop via eco-bus but you will miss lots of scenery. I have spent about 2 hours plus to finish the walk because I stop a lot for photos taking otherwise I think the walk can be done in 1 to 2 hours. I practically have the place by myself when I was there. Didn't encounter tour groups, occasionally bump into individual travelers, having said that all walk at different pace so no issue of crowdness. Will post some pictures here when I have time. There are three cableways up the mountain - Gantong (goes half way), Ximatan (the longest one), and Zhonghe (as of today, only available for people who work there). The mountain is amazing, it offers great views and some nice walks. The hiking is easy as the most work is done by the cableway. On top of the ximatan cableway it gets very cold, but you can rent a coat (how smart is that?). Unfortunately as of now the hike from Gantong cableway to zhonghe one is not available, as you have to take the same way down as you took up, which is a pity, because the trail is really awesome there. The river is in the Blue Moon Valley and is full of nice clear blue water. The rock underneath the river is white so hence the name. The area has quite a few man made features to help with glacier protection but we felt it was still worth the trip. There are lots of walkways and platforms to view the river. There is also a decent amount of vendors and clean washrooms. We had troubles getting here because the bus stations were not open when we went but our hotel helped us get a guide. As a solo traveller I didn't mind the various "toll payments" as you progressed into the gorge, although some larger groups expressed their disapproval quite loudly. It might have been avoided had a full list of prices simply been displayed on entering that area. People could well act irately as this subterfuge, but really it wasn't so much and the experience was quite enjoyable. See more..

This is a large mountainous park which has a Taoist feel to the place. There is the usual small entry fee paid at the gate, and during festivals you will be able to purchase seasonal fruits. There is a number a trails further up the mountain and you can get in amongst the blossoms in the orchards up there. There is also some kind of shooting/paint ball range at the very top which would keep some people very involved. The temple itself is under construction and sits in the centre of the park, but it is very peaceful and serine. A very cool stream runs throughout the park and you can follow it up through bonsai gardens, different plantations and different types of trees. The park can be busy on the weekends, but quiet during the week. To get here, take the subway to the second last stop on the blue line and walk 20 minutes , taxi or bike. You should combine this place with the botanical gardens across the street if you like nature. See more..

As I visited during the low peak season, getting there was challenging, as there wasn’t any direct public bus. I ended up taking 2 public buses plus a short private car ride to the top entrance. Entrance fee is 95rmb. I spent about 3 hours leisurely walking downhill to the bottom exit. By the way, both top and bottom serves as entrances as well as exits. As there was only 1 trail, exploring the area was easy. The tiered waterfalls were picturesque and beautiful, with many photography spots. Suggest to take the bamboo raft (10rmb per pax) which brings visitors closer to the waterfall for better view and photo shoots. Restrooms were located along the trail. Don't mixed this with Yuantong temple, these are two different places. This is actually a zoo with animals. Entrance fee is 15RMB. Went there in March and they have the Cherry Blossom festival, this place has a lot more Cherry trees compared to the Yuantong temple, so if you want to take nice pictures this is a better option See more..

We entered from another entrance into Shuhe, so it was like a off-beaten track to this site. It's an older part of Shuhe. Beautiful sight and full of fishes. Excellent is all relevant. If your looking for 5 Star travel and accommodations then is not for you. If your looking for a 5 Stars in experience then this valley will meet it. The road from Liuku to BingZhongLuo is narrow but is in good condition. There are some great views of the river along the way and on the south side of BingZhongLuo at the 1st and 2nd bends. There are equally great views if you travel further north to at least the first bridge crossing. Spend a couple of days in BingZhongLuo, walk to the 1st bend lookout to watch the sun rise in the snow covered mountain. The White against the Black is stunning. During the day the go to both lookouts to sit and take in the views. Travel further north past another lookout at river level and Fog Village and up to the bridge. There is a fee to pay before you enter BingZhongLuo, we got there late so didn't have to pay it. See more..

The night market is one of the best I've ever been to. So many different stalls to buy a lot of local handicraft goods, not just tourist souvenirs. For unique gifts or buys, you need to come here. The food is also pretty good, reasonably priced for a tourist destination. Make sure to just look for the cleanest stall because some are not very hygienic. I didn't get sick eating three nights in a row here, which is very surprising given night market food in general. This is a great photoshoot spot with a lot of amazing sights. You'll also see a lot of people wearing the local clothing for photoshoots. Just don't get scammed, make sure to look at reviews online as there is a lot of people trying to sell you. See more..

In May 2014, I attempted to trek from the village of Bingzhonglou in the upper Nujiang Valley over the Northern Gaoligong mountains into the remote Dulong Valley. The route was tough. My Lisu guide and I followed hunting trails through the dense primordial forest before breaking above the tree line and discovering two stunning glacial valleys at the foot of the mountains. Unfortunately the path over the large peaks was too treacherous so we crossed over into a parallel valley and discovered a vast rhododendron sanctuary - the likes of which I have never seen before - at the foot of Mt Kenyichunpo. Intrigued by this beautiful and hidden region I will be heading back in May 2015 with an expert botanist and small group to further explore the area. The Sword Peak Pond is a very nice little pond west of the central viewing pavilion half way to the ring road within the Geo Park. The place is marked on the sketch map coming with the ticket for the Stone Forest. It’s not as crowded as the main area of mass tourism thanks to the location being a little aside of the standard track. The cool and quiet atmosphere there is very special at late afternoon when shadows are getting longer; the water is very calm with clear reflections of the surrounding 30-40 m high rocky towers. This is a pretty waterfall more or less inside Tengchong, so getting there is quick and easy. The day I was there, no entry fee was required, though there may be in high season. Not sure. You can take a short hike down some steep stair to get closer to the waterfalls and the obligatory photo-ops. Not amazing, but worth 30 minutes or 1 hour max. A couple small pavilions in the area as well. Not crowded when I was there, right after Spring Festival. In summary, this is an easy place to add to a day trip itinerary, but not a destination that would justify coming to Tengchong all by itself. See more..

We went with friends in 3 MPVs. Narrow roads only one car can pass for each direction. Once there was a slight landslide, we were stranded for about an hour, waiting for the people to clear the road. I have been this mountain many times, most were trekking or plant explore. i like the nature views and rich biological species. and the local minority people are so kind and so honest, they always gave many help during we trekking. Ascending by cable car was amazing, extremely steep. You could see elaborate trail markings in the mountainsides from the monkeys foraging. The cable car lets out to a steep long staircase (prepare to get out of breath from high altitude, and to see friendly monkeys along the way) that leads to a Buddhist temple, and priests are there to give you incense for a donation. The view of the lake should be spectacular, but was not on that particular day due to a forest fire nearby. We decided to get on down if the fire got too close to us. There was actually charred mountain side in our view, likely from another fire that had occurred before we were there. Don't miss learning about the native Musuo people and their interesting, ancient culture, and tradition known as walking marriage. See more..
