Napa Hai Nature Reserve, Yunnan, China

4.0 (180 reviews) Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent Ranking #9 in Yunnan Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas

Good afternoon trip

Very suitable for two to three hours walk during the afternoon, feeling the wind and the sun in your face (use sunscreen). Take a rented scooter from Shangri-La (roughly 30 mins ride) and spend 30 RMB on entrance. Don't ride a horse, just walk yourself. Preferably wear shoes that you don't mind getting dirty or muddy, but if you are careful it's not necessary. Take a camera to take photos of the mountains surrounding the valley and the horses/mules, sheep and yak.

    A perfect place for birdwatching
As mentioned by the user "chc9533" in 2019, Napa Hai isn't a touristic lake. For people looking for a touristic and well-developed lake, this might not be the right place. However, it's a perfect place for bird watching. I was able to spot many interesting species of birds. It is better to have a car and keep flexible in order to be able to see the animals. Definitely a place to recommend for nature lovers!

Napa Lake bike circuit, first half great, second half awful
We rented multispeed mountain bikes for 20RMB instead of the new ones for 30RMB and some of the gears did not work, so be prepared. We LOVED the first half of the 40 kilometer circuit, first riding down a hill from the city and then riding on relatively flat land around the perimeter of the Tibetan plateau with mountains to one side and flat, boggy farmland to the other. The road was little used except by bikes, a few tourist cars, farm vehicles and farm animals (our most demanding moment was crossing a Yak herd in the middle of the road. Those horns look really scary close up!) We LOVED this first half of the route BUT HATED the second half of the route. After we reached Napa Lake the route took us on to a long gradual uphill busy two lane highway with lots of trucks and buses belching diesel fumes. The shoulder was covered in sand, gravel and recent fallen large rocks; it was like an obstacle course. This followed by city street that lasted about 8 kilometers in city traffic. It was AWFUL. We highly recommend you turn around at the end of the Napa Lake and repeat the first half of the bike ride.
