  1. 4.5 Old Town of Lijiang - China (5.097 reviews)
    - The best old town I visited to date
Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Historic Walking Areas
Old Town of Lijiang - China image
I visited a few old towns in China, but this one has to be my favorite one to date. During my time in Lijiang, I didn't even bother going to the city because the old town was so much fun not to mention that the food was incredible. While morning are very quiet as shops open rather late, the evenings were far from boring. The bar street sure made for some nice evenings while the afternoons allowed me and my friend to visit more of Old Town while trying out different food (such as tofu ice cream (don't judge until you try it)), Chinese wraps and of course the flowers cake. As for dinner, the ribs hot pot is fantastic! I shouldn't forget to mention that the buildings are beautiful, and I strongly recommend you check the small alleys as you might be surprised by what you may see. See more..

  3. 4.0 Yunnan Nationalities VillageBenzilam (509 reviews)
    - A Bit Like a Human Zoo but Still Worth the Visit
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Yunnan Nationalities VillageBenzilam image
The recreated buildings and villages are marvelous and one of the last places you can really see many of them. The villages are inhabited by minority entertainers and their families and they seem to enjoy performing but you will see it’s their home and you’re intruding around meal times. The Wa hair dance and the minority Bamboo Stick Dance (I think it’s the Li but I am not sure) were the highlight of the shows. See more..
  4. 4.5 Mufu Palace (454 reviews)
    - very well preserved, a joy to visit
Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Mufu Palace image
Mufu palace lies on the side of the hill holding Lion Rock. The location is very scenic with much vegetation and stone work. The main entrance is from the ancient city southern center where you can get tickets and guides. We entered in the back while coming down from Lion Rock and skipped the guides and front entrance crowds. This place is really wonderful to visit - so many people agree that you will find large crowds during the normal tourist seasons. As much as I liked it though I would recommend that you see it with a guide as we missed much history without one. See more..
  5. 4.5 Kunming Dragon Gate (375 reviews)
    - Dragon gate Kunming
Thursday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Kunming Dragon Gate image
We took a bus followed by chairlifts up to the TOP of the hill, then walk our way down . This is the easier way to see the site. The steps were painstakingly chiselled out along the cliffs by a Taoist priest and his followers in the Qing dynasty over 90+ years, can be slippery on a rainy day. The view was good. See more..

  8. 4.0 Lijiang Mural in Baisha Village (209 reviews)
    - Mural and much more
Thursday: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
Lijiang Mural in Baisha Village image
Lieutenant General Chennault (1893-1958), the Commander of the Flying Tigers, wrote in his diary, " The Naxi People who ae living at the foothill of Himalaya Mountain are very brave, bold, nice and helpful. The women are very famous for their handicrafts---silk embroidery." I can add tie die, batik, and wood work to silk embroidery. You can visit any of their workshops. There are street musicians playing Naxi music and you can see local produce and medicinal mushrooms. A bag of freshly steamed chestnuts for 40 cents. And the view of the Snow Mountain simply magnificent. We were there for 3 to 4 hours. Wish we had 3 weeks there learning handicraft, which by the way is offered free. Compared to Lijiand, Baisha is quiet and remains unchanged since the Flying Tiger Days. See more..
  9. 4.5 World Heritage Park, Lijiang (199 reviews)
    - Beautiful architecture
Thursday: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Bodies of Water • Mountains • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Parks
    World Heritage Park, Lijiang image
Great place to explore and get lost in, akin to Venice in terms of narrow streets and car-free environment. Some things to definitely enjoy - 1. Canals - these run throughout the town, go through the back streets (follow the canal path along Qiyi Street) to see more and avoid the crowds. You may bump into locals there whom are very friendly. 2. Roofscape - very interesting and best viewed from Hizi Mount / Lion Hill (the hill to the west of the town with the temple at the top). 3. Courtyards - most houses / inns in the old town have internal courtyards which you can peek into and maybe enter (but ask first if you're not sure). The northern part of town around Yuhe Square can be mobbed in the evenings and is very touristy, complete with McD's, KFC, Pizza Hut et all, so best avoid if you're not into these things. Would be good if the Lijiang authorities clamp down on the bars and clubs pumping loud music. See more..
  10. 4.5 Xizhou Town (178 reviews)
    - Start with morning market and then explore old town
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Xizhou Town image
The bustling morning market was a highlight, and old town was nice and not busy when we checked it out afterwards. It made for a nice change from the much more crowded old town of Dali and Lijiang and highly recommend to include the market and this little gem in your itinerary. It was part of our guided Yunnan tour and glad we did it. See more..

  12. 4.0 Nanping Business Street (122 reviews)
    - Shopping and weekend crowds
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Nanping Business Street image
I worked here for about a year, so it's hard to wax lyrical. It's basically a pedestrianized wide street with shops on either side and food stalls in the middle. It tends to be overpriced, but it's very convenient for finding what you want easily. There's a huge bookstore here I go to all the time. Unless you read Chinese you're best off not going in. In spring and summer there are several tents where couples go to order wedding photos and hire elaborate gowns. There are usually models outside displaying both traditional Chinese and Western bridal gowns -- quite magnificent. There are side streets off Nanping Jie with numerous restaurants including a small Muslim area with ethnic dishes. It's also very close to the Bird and Flower market (worth a stroll). During festivals there is a big stage set up centrally for a variety of performances of mixed quality. This is not really a tourist attraction; more like an outdoor Western mall. It's really packed with locals on weekends. You won't find many people who speak English here, and if you are a foreigner the people hounding locals from shop fronts will leave you alone. See more..

  14. 4.5 Jiuxiang Scenic Region (119 reviews)
    - Jiuxiang Cave
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks • Caverns & Caves
    Jiuxiang Scenic Region image
I'll start this be saying that this should be combined with a trip to Shilin Stone Forest. Make it two days and spend the night in a local town/city so that you don't have to rush either location. With out a doubt the best cave that I have been in for sightseeing. Starts with a boat ride (paddle) up what I think is the beginning of the Yangtze River. (The English written sign was not easlily read or understood). A short trip up the small gorge in a boat with about 10 other tourists and one paddler. From here you walk down the gorge and for the next couple of hours you walk in and out of and through many different caverns. The walk ends with a cable car ride back to near the main entrance. If you stay in Yiliang I suggest trying to arrange for a local to take you on the local bus that runs from Yiliang to Jiuxiang, fantastic trip. The bus stops about 1 km from the entrance and the stop is not clearly marked so a local is a great help. Well worth the walk. See more..
  15. 5.0 Yubeng Village (110 reviews)
    - 2 night stay including a hike to the Sacred Waterfall
Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Yubeng Village image
Did this as part of a food tour with Lost Plate, and it was amazing. Jeeps are the only way in and we stayed at Yubeng Upper Village. Cloud and snow covered the next morning, we set off on a 16km roundtrip hike with our group to the Sacred Waterfall. It was slightly below 0 but with warm clothes, temperatures weren't a problem. Hike was great and there's also plenty of birds to see along the way. Prayer flags everywhere make for great photo ops! The morning of our departure, we finally saw the sky and the peaks of the surrounding mountains, truly awe-inspiring. See more..

    - What you need
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Lookouts • Observation Decks & Towers • Scenic Walking Areas
    Shika Snow Mountains image
We went in July, so this will be very different for those traveling when there is snow. 1. Get a driver who will take you for 40 RMB and get you a discount ticket for 200 RMB 2. Bring your own windbreaker and coat. Those red ones they rent look disgusting. 3. Sunscreen, we got burnt even with it. 4. If you think you need oxygen, buy it in the city for 25 RMB a large canister. Don't listen to people saying that the city-bought oxygen is lower quality. 5. Go in the morning. Large groups of tourists come over from the national park and grasslands in the afternoon. 6. There is some, but limited, food options in the mid-level and upper level areas. 7. If you are worried about not being able to physically climb, there is no climbing involved. Apparently there is a footpath for those who want to climb, but I do not know anything about it. See more..
  18. 4.0 Shibaoshan Town (50 reviews)
    - Very quiet, decent hiking, monkeys and nice views
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Shibaoshan Town image
This cannot compare to the views of Tiger Leaping Gorge (non-touristy bits), but still worth a visit if you like hiking. It is a 1.5 hour drive from Lijiang and near the Shaxi Old Town. You pay an entry fee (approx. 50 kuai) to get in, and then a further fee (approx. another 30RMB) for the shuttle bus to get around the place. The area is split up into 3 main sections, the Baoxiang Temple (宝相寺)around 2km from the entrance, the Shilong reservoir (石龙水库)another 2km on and the Shizhong Temple/Shizhongshan Grottoes (石钟山石窟) another 10km in. All are worth visiting, and you can do some decent hiking around the Shizhong Temple. Food options within the mountain area are very limited, so best to eat a good meal beforehand. This unique scenery is really worth a look if you are in Kunming (about 1 h 30 to get there by car). It is quite crowded at the entrance but it is possible to enjoy the landscape in quieter places in you move deeper in the forest. Its museum isn't well advertised but definitely worth a visit, I especially enjoyed the section with the precious stones and the ones dedicated to the dinosaurs. See more..

  22. 4.5 Luosi Field, Luoping (30 reviews)
    - Miss the canola flowers
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Luosi Field, Luoping image
As I visited during the last week of March, the canola flowers were gone. As it was low peak season, I could not find public transport and had to hire a private car, which brought me to a viewing platform next to a main road. The view was nice, with the ringed fields like a snail. I am sure the scenery will be fantastic with canola flowers. Hence strongly advice to visit at the right season, preferably in Feb instead of March. See more..
  23. 4.0 Air Corridor, Sipsongpanna (23 reviews)
    - Really expensive -Very nice short tree walk
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Air Corridor, Sipsongpanna image
We went there for the sky tree. Very nice but so expensive. 198¥ for entry including boat to there. ONLY 1 attraction included. So be careful. You can choose between sky rode walk or glass bridge. If you want to do both, well you have to pocket out 120¥ more. We did inside the tree activities: 200¥ more for barely 20 min of action, but followed by a 40 min trek back to main base. We love the sky tree walk. We hated the prices. See more..

    Parashorea Chinensis, Mengla image
This tourist spot was quite far away from Jinghong and was over 2 hours' car-driven time from the city centre. Nonetheless it was really worthwhile in visiting this spot as you could find many high trees, some over 50-meters high, and tropical plants inside the area. If you was brave enough and not afraid of heights, you should pay an additional charge to climb up the trees and walk across the suspension bridge which was used by the forest-staff in the past in doing observation checks on the plantations around. 31. 4.5 Yunshanping Ropeway (8 reviews)
    - Lovely meadow and a good walk!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Yunshanping Ropeway image
The yak meadow ropeway was closed for maintenance so we opted for this meadow (spruce meadow). We were surprised at the number of tourists with rented heavy coats and oxygen bottles. It’s only 3200m and was a warm June day!! I guess if people had come from sea level they might’ve needed O2. Anyway there was an option to take an e car to the top of the meadow or walk the slight incline. We walked. The whole boardwalk was a couple km I think but it was well maintained and wide enough for lots of people. The meadow was beautiful in the shadow of YuLong mountain. There were sheep and goats but no yaks. Also the ever common bride and photographer! It was a nice walk around and would be a great spot for a picnic lunch or to just hang out for the day. The ropeway itself was not very long. 8 minutes perhaps? See more..

the Establishment of the Tropic of Cancer image
The Tropic of Cancer runs through a park on the outskirts of Mojiang 墨江。 On certain days of the year, statues here don't cast a shadow. Climbing the (many) stairs of the park to the top provides an excellent view of the town and surrounding hills. There's a planetarium which is open at night. Entry to the park is 30 Yuan. Mojiang has a second distinction: It has more twins per capita than any other city in China. Some people believe it's the water, others just shrug their hands. Once a year (in May) they hold a big celebration in honor of twins. Because of the yearly twins festival, the town has lots of lodging options. Getting to Mojiang requires a bus ride of about four hours from the far south of Kunming. If you go, you should probably spend the night. It's also a great place to experience Hani minority culture. 哈尼族。You can eat lots of dishes made of bamboo shoots 竹笋 and wild mountain plants, including wild mushrooms. See more..
