Mufu Palace, Yunnan, China
4.5 (454 reviews) Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent Ranking #5 in Lijiang Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
very well preserved, a joy to visit
Mufu palace lies on the side of the hill holding Lion Rock. The location is very scenic with much vegetation and stone work. The main entrance is from the ancient city southern center where you can get tickets and guides. We entered in the back while coming down from Lion Rock and skipped the guides and front entrance crowds. This place is really wonderful to visit - so many people agree that you will find large crowds during the normal tourist seasons. As much as I liked it though I would recommend that you see it with a guide as we missed much history without one.

Well worth a visit
Spent a morning here and it was so worth it. It was much more intimate and assessable than our visit to the Forbidden City in Beijing. That might also be down to the fact that we did this on our own rather than with a guide, so could take our own time looking around. It’s worth climbing the stairs at the back of the gardens for views of the old town rooftops below.

Oasis in the Ancient Village
At first, I thought the 60 yuan entry fee was a bit stiff, but as a respite from surrounding crowded streets and souvenir shops, it was well worth the fee. The complex, which was rebuilt after the fire and earthquake of 1996, looks more like a string of colourful Chinese temples, than a residence. It extends some distance up the hill behind, which as other reviewers have noted, provides a great look out over Lijiang. If you keep going right to the end, you can access 'Lion Hill' if you like more walking, but at another 60 yuan and the extra climbing effort required, most tourists turn back at this point. Plum blossoms and magnolia trees in February also add to the colour and picturesque scenes.
