We took a bus from Lijiang Ancient City for 15 RMB and it took us to the foot of the mountain. Then we took the bus from there up to the Blue Moon Valley. The place was breath-taking. The colour of the water was amazingly stunning. We did not go up the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain as we heard that there was no snow at this time of the year. The Blue Moon Lake was already worth the trip. As it was rainy season, we had brought along our raincoat. It rained and stopped, rained and stopped. We walked around the lake, walking on the jungle side was a very interesting experience. Because of the wet weather, different species of flora and fungi could be spotted along the way. See more..

Great place. Took a taxi, and then they have you purchase tickets for the the cable car or bus. We took a bus to the first section, then where everyone else went on the cable car we preferred to walk up and then back down. It will take half a day if you take transport, slightly more if you decide to walk instead. There are many shops and rest spots if you decide to eat there. When we went there were many tour groups, but it's normal for a tourist spot. As a note, to go to Dragon Gate you have to go down narrow passages within the rock and on the edge of the mountain- it is perfectly safe and there is a fantastic view of Dianchi Lake, but if you are scared of/uncomfortable in small spaces, you can skip Dragon Gate and explore other scenic spots instead. Great place to explore and get lost in, akin to Venice in terms of narrow streets and car-free environment. Some things to definitely enjoy - 1. Canals - these run throughout the town, go through the back streets (follow the canal path along Qiyi Street) to see more and avoid the crowds. You may bump into locals there whom are very friendly. 2. Roofscape - very interesting and best viewed from Hizi Mount / Lion Hill (the hill to the west of the town with the temple at the top). 3. Courtyards - most houses / inns in the old town have internal courtyards which you can peek into and maybe enter (but ask first if you're not sure). The northern part of town around Yuhe Square can be mobbed in the evenings and is very touristy, complete with McD's, KFC, Pizza Hut et all, so best avoid if you're not into these things. Would be good if the Lijiang authorities clamp down on the bars and clubs pumping loud music. See more..

There are three cableways up the mountain - Gantong (goes half way), Ximatan (the longest one), and Zhonghe (as of today, only available for people who work there). The mountain is amazing, it offers great views and some nice walks. The hiking is easy as the most work is done by the cableway. On top of the ximatan cableway it gets very cold, but you can rent a coat (how smart is that?). Unfortunately as of now the hike from Gantong cableway to zhonghe one is not available, as you have to take the same way down as you took up, which is a pity, because the trail is really awesome there. The trail up to Lion Hill Park starts from a corner of Sifang Square in Lijiang Old Town. The tourist shops and cafes that lined the trail are good distractions from the actual climb. The effort is worth it as Lion Hill Park offers wonderful views of Lijiang. The entrance fee to Lion Hill Park is RMB50 which includes entrance to Wang Gu Pavilion located at the top of Lion Hill Park. Climb to the top of Wang Gu Pavilion for a 360deg view of the whole of Lijiang, both old and new. We visited in the early evening to watch the sunset over the rooftops of the old town. Alternatively, to catch the views without actually entering Lion Hill Park, look out for the cafes on the left and right of the trail just before the entrance to the park. The cafes charge RMB5 if you want to just enter to check out the views. Otherwise, do what we did, order a cup of tea and enjoy the views of the sun slowly setting and the lights coming on from the old town. See more..

As I visited during the low peak season, getting there was challenging, as there wasn’t any direct public bus. I ended up taking 2 public buses plus a short private car ride to the top entrance. Entrance fee is 95rmb. I spent about 3 hours leisurely walking downhill to the bottom exit. By the way, both top and bottom serves as entrances as well as exits. As there was only 1 trail, exploring the area was easy. The tiered waterfalls were picturesque and beautiful, with many photography spots. Suggest to take the bamboo raft (10rmb per pax) which brings visitors closer to the waterfall for better view and photo shoots. Restrooms were located along the trail. The little Ancient town, Tuan Shan, is definitely worth of a visit. Little yellow minivan / busses run from opposite the KFC near the Linann Hotel. They charge 5 RMB pp (Aug 15) and drive you all the way to the parking of Mission Hill (I.e) an other name for the place. The journey is about 13 km and the ride takes about 30 min. On the return journey it appears that the little busses seem to depart on the hour and half hour. The place has a number of English signs explaining the buildings. Entrance fee was 50 RMB pp and 25 RMB for students. We spent a few hours strolling through the village's old narrow streets and buildings. See more..

Don't mixed this with Yuantong temple, these are two different places. This is actually a zoo with animals. Entrance fee is 15RMB. Went there in March and they have the Cherry Blossom festival, this place has a lot more Cherry trees compared to the Yuantong temple, so if you want to take nice pictures this is a better option See more..

This was my first visit of three to an ethnic minority village and even if I understood their need for money, I felt a bit like I was at the zoo, which made me uncomfortable. The guided tour is, understandably, only in Chinese (my partner translated some of it) and is so-so but not bad. The walk is short but don't go if you are not able-bodied. I have never seen a peak more elegant and mystic. No wonder it's sacred o the Tibetans. The Mingyong glacier which flows of its flank is equally marvelous. Make sure your guide takes you up to Lian Hua Si (Temple) and not only to Tai Zi Si, because the lower end of the glacier is disappointing, only from Lian Hua Si you get the most fantastic view of the glacier and up the mountain! The peak stands at 4500m. The view is good with sprawling mountain stretching far and horizon disappearing. As cable car is available, it doesn't require much effort ascending to the top. Excellent is all relevant. If your looking for 5 Star travel and accommodations then is not for you. If your looking for a 5 Stars in experience then this valley will meet it. The road from Liuku to BingZhongLuo is narrow but is in good condition. There are some great views of the river along the way and on the south side of BingZhongLuo at the 1st and 2nd bends. There are equally great views if you travel further north to at least the first bridge crossing. Spend a couple of days in BingZhongLuo, walk to the 1st bend lookout to watch the sun rise in the snow covered mountain. The White against the Black is stunning. During the day the go to both lookouts to sit and take in the views. Travel further north past another lookout at river level and Fog Village and up to the bridge. There is a fee to pay before you enter BingZhongLuo, we got there late so didn't have to pay it. See more..

The Jiaozi mountain is an absolute beautiful. Drove from Kunming city centre. Takes about 2-3 hours. You drive up to a certain point 3000m, then you take the first shuttle bus to the main centre of the mountain to purchase tickets. Prices are a bit steep but discounts are available for students. Then you take another shuttle bus to a base point at about 3500m, There you have an option to start walking up or take a cable car ride. The cable car ride when we went was very crowded, so we decided to start walking up. The walk up is beautiful but dangerous (i.e. no proper railings on the stairs etc). Make sure you have proper hiking shoes. Once you reach the next base point, there are around 4-5 spots you can visit. The furthest and highest one is the Sedan Chair. In May 2014, I attempted to trek from the village of Bingzhonglou in the upper Nujiang Valley over the Northern Gaoligong mountains into the remote Dulong Valley. The route was tough. My Lisu guide and I followed hunting trails through the dense primordial forest before breaking above the tree line and discovering two stunning glacial valleys at the foot of the mountains. Unfortunately the path over the large peaks was too treacherous so we crossed over into a parallel valley and discovered a vast rhododendron sanctuary - the likes of which I have never seen before - at the foot of Mt Kenyichunpo. Intrigued by this beautiful and hidden region I will be heading back in May 2015 with an expert botanist and small group to further explore the area. This is a pretty waterfall more or less inside Tengchong, so getting there is quick and easy. The day I was there, no entry fee was required, though there may be in high season. Not sure. You can take a short hike down some steep stair to get closer to the waterfalls and the obligatory photo-ops. Not amazing, but worth 30 minutes or 1 hour max. A couple small pavilions in the area as well. Not crowded when I was there, right after Spring Festival. In summary, this is an easy place to add to a day trip itinerary, but not a destination that would justify coming to Tengchong all by itself. See more..

The air here was much cleaner than in Chinese cities, we didn't have a problem with polution at all. The scenery is spectacular with differently shaped mountains (some obviously phallic shaped, others looking like a teapot or the Chinese "Monkey King." The hike is strenuous and even a bit harrowing in places where the stairs go straight up, but my 61 year old parents were able to do it. There were several temples along the way where you could see monks running up and down the stairs, as well as many restrooms and conveniently placed shops to restock on water and snacks. Many of the local people looked like they were there on dates, so the girls climbed the whole huge mountain in uncomfortable looking slippers and heels. See more..

There is a red tower on the mountain on the very end of Yuxi city. Red is Hong, and tower is ta, in Chinese. So the mountain is called the Hong ta shan. I heard a story that the tower in two ends of the city was to tame a big dragon by bionding it's head and tail. At that ancient time of Ming dynasty, the tower was white in color. The color changed later but the stories remain. There are statues of God on the top of the tower, in the side that faces the city. A nice place to walk hand in hand with dear ones and go higher with small steps. On the base of the tower there is a museum of the Hong Ta cigarette group. The museum shows a brief history of the main industry that is very crucial to modern Yuxi. Hope to return there soon and spend more time roaming around the mountain and hearing the rain water trickle from the higher leaf to the lower one. See more..

We went with friends in 3 MPVs. Narrow roads only one car can pass for each direction. Once there was a slight landslide, we were stranded for about an hour, waiting for the people to clear the road. Our guide recommended the trip to Qianshi Mountain and we have really enjoyed it. Its not overrun at all. There are obviously hundreds of steps to climb but its worthwhile to see the hundereds of stone lions that got carved there into the walls. The beautiful landscape gives this place a special atmosphere. The climb to the lion king is worthwhile since the outlook is nice but obviously the lion has been created only 20 years ago. We did not got to the tower on top of the hill since our guide advised its not worthwhile. We left in the morning at 9am in Lijang and came back around 3pm. See more..

I have been this mountain many times, most were trekking or plant explore. i like the nature views and rich biological species. and the local minority people are so kind and so honest, they always gave many help during we trekking. Ascending by cable car was amazing, extremely steep. You could see elaborate trail markings in the mountainsides from the monkeys foraging. The cable car lets out to a steep long staircase (prepare to get out of breath from high altitude, and to see friendly monkeys along the way) that leads to a Buddhist temple, and priests are there to give you incense for a donation. The view of the lake should be spectacular, but was not on that particular day due to a forest fire nearby. We decided to get on down if the fire got too close to us. There was actually charred mountain side in our view, likely from another fire that had occurred before we were there. There are not many old houses, and everything is under construction (very dusty). But, what I liked is that Babao is not a commercial village, and you still can see the peasants planting rice, grandmas carrying their nephews on their backs and grandpas smoking their cigarets. The locals are also friendly and curios... we got invited in their home for a cup of tea. At first I was a bit disappointed about how it looks with all those new buildings but hey! this is the New China! Everything under construction! I would recommend this place only to travelers that have plenty of time - if you're on a short trip to Yunnan then better try to visit some other places. See more..

Cixiong Waterfall also named Twin Falls, is part of the Jiuxiang Scenic Region. The unique thing about these falls is the water from the gorge passes through a cave before falling 30 meters down to a pool. At first we only saw one waterfall. After walking down some more, we saw the second falls meeting the stream rushing and splashing down. What a marvellous sight to watch with colourful lighting. In this big cave there are many more to see. “The Fairy Vale”, “Bat Cave”, stalactites, stalagmites and rock pillars. Wear comfortable shoes, parts of the path are narrow and wet. There are lots of steps down to explore the cave, and 336 steps climb back up. But don’t worry there are “Chair carriages” available and cost 60 RMB. Beware of some porters, half way up, I heard they asked for more money, and the lady end up gave them 100 RMB. Even 100 RMB is still reasonable. Happy Travelling! See more..
