Shuhe Ancient Town, Yunnan, China

Great way to spend an afternoon

Shuhe is a small village a couple miles to the north of Lijiang, in Yunnan province. It has similar old architecture as Lijiang with similar places to buy Naxi woven cloth and products from local artisans. A major advantage over Lijiang is that it is relatively unknown so the streets are much less crowded and food and lodging is cheaper. In addition to woven goods, there are stores selling wood carvings, Naxi style pottery and silver filigree jewelry. There was an elderly artist whose paintings were all done with the edge of his thumb producing quite astonishing images.

Great, but not better than Lijiang's Old Town
If I hadn't visited Lijiang's Old Town prior to visiting this one, I would have given this one a five "star" review. The Shuhe Ancient Town is a beautiful one to visit, but it pales in comparison to Lijiang's Old Town. I'm glad I visited both as they are different in some aspects. If you have time to visit both, please do so, but if you have time only for one, I do recommend you visit Lijiang's Old Town.

    Too commercial, nothing of interest
There's almost no point going there if you've been to lijiang old town. It's basically the same but with more loud bars and tourist cars blasting loud music through the streets. Go a little bit north to Baisha village for a more pleasant experience.
