    Kasteel Van Breda image
The Castle of Breda (Kasteel van Breda) is a stunning landmark, just north of Breda cosy city center. The castle used to be the grounds owned by the founders of Breda and of the Dutch Royal Family. Nowadays the castle is used as a university complex for the Dutch Department of Defence, to educate and train their officers. The attraction can only be accessed with a guided tour from the VVV tourist office (located at the Grote Markt) for a small fee. Nevertheless, visiting the complex is impressive. The castle consists of several buildings. The castle is located in the center of the gounds and was rebuilt in the 1700's. The walls and defence works of the castle date back from the middle ages and underneath these complexes undergound tunnels run under the city (only a few are accesible). Finally, the Spanjaarsgat offers a great view in on Breda's harbour and is one of the few remaining acient defence works Breda has to offer. If you are visiting Breda, don't miss this attraction! Beautifully restored mansion house (castle is a little overstated) although you cannot visit the interior unless there is a special event but the garden and botanical and horticultural garden are very nice with a lovely terrace café and a small self catering apartment located in one of the annex buildings. 8. 4.0 Kasteel Dussen (4 reviews)
    - Castle with nice items and stories
Wednesday: Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Castles
    Kasteel Dussen image
Dussen castle is not the best-known castle, but it looks quite nice from the outside, and it has some nice stories to tell. On top of that, there are some nice items to be seen inside. A downside is that much of the castle is in use by companies, and not open to the public. In 1393 the fortified house at this spot was elevated to a castle by Arend II van der Dussen. The Elisabeth flood turned the castle into a ruin in 1421, and in 1456 reconstruction commenced. More damage and reconstruction happened in the war between Brabant and Holland, under Spanish rule during the 80-years war, under Napoleon's rule, and finally in WWII. The gate was guarded by two towers, with a connecting tower in-between. Bormbardments destroyed the left and middle towers. The left tower was re-built in octagonal shape, which makes an interesting contrast with the round shape of the right tower. Inside, one of the highlights is a chest for harnesses, where some pieces of red cloth decorations can still be admired. The guides have some interesting stories to tell, such as the eight sleepers that accompanied the single lady in the castle in the early 20th century. See more..
