Stunning military grounds and castle
The Castle of Breda (Kasteel van Breda) is a stunning landmark, just north of Breda cosy city center. The castle used to be the grounds owned by the founders of Breda and of the Dutch Royal Family. Nowadays the castle is used as a university complex for the Dutch Department of Defence, to educate and train their officers. The attraction can only be accessed with a guided tour from the VVV tourist office (located at the Grote Markt) for a small fee. Nevertheless, visiting the complex is impressive. The castle consists of several buildings. The castle is located in the center of the gounds and was rebuilt in the 1700's. The walls and defence works of the castle date back from the middle ages and underneath these complexes undergound tunnels run under the city (only a few are accesible). Finally, the Spanjaarsgat offers a great view in on Breda's harbour and is one of the few remaining acient defence works Breda has to offer. If you are visiting Breda, don't miss this attraction!
