  5. 4.5 Abdijsite Herkenrode (277 reviews)
    - Make sure you visit when in Hasselt
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Architectural Buildings
    Abdijsite Herkenrode image
The visitor centre is well-designed and gives a really good insight to the history of the Abbey. The buildings themselves, whilst original, have been through many uses over the years, religious, agricultural and industrial but have now been restored but it is the opportunity to learn about the history that is most worthwhile. For that reason there is problably little for young children to do. The audio guide is available in French, German, Dutch and English and is very easy to use. The gardens were just closing for the season (end-October) and the lady on the desk did not recommend us to pay the extra fee but a glance through the gate suggested they would be worth seeing in the summer. There is a cafe but with a limited selection so don't expect an extensive menu. Use bus 23 from Hasselt to Herckenrode Abdij (hourly) or H1 to Heerstraat (half-hourly), less frequently on Sundays. Then walk about half a mile over the motorway bridge and keep left when the road forks. See more..

The Hoge Kempen is the largest woodland and nature reserve in Flanders. Extensive pine woods alternate with purple flowering heathland. Large lakes were left behind where sand and gravel were extracted. The highest ‘peaks’, 100 meters high, offer magnificent views. It is home to many rare and exceptional animals. Encountering a roe is not exceptional and butterflies like the swallowtail butterfly brighten up the summer. Special inhabitants are the slippery snake, the antlion and the European beewolf. Large stones and small boulders attest to the last ice age and lend it all a magical feeling. The Hoge Kempen National Park welcomes people with a ‘heart for nature’. That is why five locations have been selected as ‘Gateway to the Hoge Kempen National Park’: Stations As in As, Pietersheim in Lanaken, Mechelse Heide in Maasmechelen, Kattevennen in Genk and Lieteberg in Zutendaal. 15. 4.5 Duitse Militaire Begraafplaats (135 reviews)
    - Staggering Proportions
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Duitse Militaire Begraafplaats image
We visited the cemetery with 2 couples and 1 child (9 years old). Driving up, I already caught my breath when I got a glimpse over the hedges of rows upon rows of crosses that stretch out into the distance. The numbers are staggering. 39000 graves are here. As you wander down, you can’t help but think about who they were, what were their dreams, what about their families.... you see graves of men who were the same age as you are now, have the same last name of someone you know, or shares the same birthday as your cousin. The cemetery is meticulously cared for. When you arrive, walk through the courtyard of the cafe, to the monument and up through one of the internal staircases to get an overview of the fields of graves. It’s a sobering moment. See more..

  18. 4.5 Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen (74 reviews)
    - Beautiful estate - great atmosphere - excellent wines - warm welcome - well organized
    Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Wineries & Vineyards
    Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen image
This is the only Belgian wine castle. The estate is beautifully maintained with manicured gardens, nice buildings and the lovely central castle in neo classical style. The estate can be entirely visited (guided tours - all common international languages possible) except the inside of the castle itself which is only for private use of the owners. The guides are well informed about every detail of this wine estate and the process of wine making and share this information in a for everyone understandable way. You learn why the surroundings are an ideal terroir for the wines they produce and why they produce that sort of wines. As well the historic cellars as the newly build cellars with lots of oak barrels are impressive. The wine tasting at the end is highly recommended, and yes the wine is excellent and worthwhile to buy a couple of boxes to take home. Don't forget to taste the distilled products and the bubbles they make too. Absolutely a super experience. See more..

    Grotten Van Kanne image
Visited the place with small children (aged 5 and 7). Both had a great time. The guide was ably to keep the whole group attentive. Not an easy job for a tour that lasts almost 2h. Must visit when you're in the area. Prices are on the low side. Entry point is a bit hard to find, as it's a bit further from the road with just a gate. Only accept cash. See more..

    - Obon Matsuri at the Japanese Garden, great summer evening!
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Gardens
    Japanese Tuin image
While we have visited the Japanese Garden many times, we never visited the garden on a summer evening. However, Obon Matsuri was worth a visit. During two summer evenings in August, the Japanese Garden celebrates Obon Matsuri, which includes Tōrō Nagashi. After sunset, the garden was decorated with floating paper lanterns, turning the pond in front of the tea house into a sea of lights which was accompanied by festive Japanese music and performances. 26. 4.0 Center Parcs de Vossemeren (331 reviews)
    - Nice place but avoid peak periods
    Amusement & Theme Parks
    Center Parcs de Vossemeren image
We went to Center Park for the new year's eve. The location is surrounded by nature, our cottage in zone 9 was quite far from services but extremely calm. The cottage (deluxe type) was well equipped end relaxing, some furniture or linen could be better. The central Dome is magnificent and well maintained but all the restaurants and buffets serve more or less the same food and the quality is medium/low (Fuego restaurant deserves a special mention for being horrible). Prices are quite high. Aqua mundo is nice and funny and offers a lot of water experience for the whole family BUT Center Parc should really think about setting a limited number of access to the pool for the external visitors when the village is fully booked: pools were really too much crowded and on Friday 3/1 the situation was intolerable. Discovery bay is nice and funny. In conclusion, if you live the structure as a camping, you avoid to eat all the times to the restaurants and you are not interested in being alone in the water, the place can be very nice and relaxing. See more..
  27. 4.0 Fietsen Door Het Water (159 reviews)
    - Nice surprise during biking trip
Spent < 1 hour Biking Trails
    Fietsen Door Het Water image
We did a bike trip from Hasselt to ‘fietsen door water’ in Bokrijk. About 20 km back and forth. Driving at height of the water and seeing the ducks at eye level, while water surface changes colors, was a nice surprise. We followed the fietsknooppuntenroutes as indicated by Tourism information where we also rented the bikes. See more..

    GlazenHuis image
We visited here last week whilst at Center Parcs De Vossemeren. Easy to get to and plenty of parking as it is in the centre of town near all the restaurants. The children loved watching the glass making and the people using the studio very kindly explained the process to the children (and us) and also let them do a bit of glass blowing themselves at the end. Fantastic!! See more..
  30. 3.5 Plopsa Indoor Hasselt (351 reviews)
    - Great for 2-10 year old kids
Spent More than 3 hours Amusement & Theme Parks
    Plopsa Indoor Hasselt image
We visited Plopsaland indoor Hasselt in February, and although it was cold the outside area was open as well. We went on a Sunday and it was not too busy, only 5 minute waiting or less for any attraction. Our kids loved the rides, please note that a few be a little wild for very young kids. The indoor rollercoaster is nice even for adults. They also have a playground area with a ball pit and a big slide (a big hit with our kids). The bumba theatre show was nice as well. All in all we had a fun day there, we were there from 11 am until 5 pm. For 18 euro per adult and child taller than 1 meter it is on the expensive side, and better to bring your own food as the food is very expensive for what you get, but it is definitely worth a day trip if you are nearby, especially when the weather is bad.
