Lots for kids of all ages to do with climbing frames, wooden obstacle courses and slides etc. Well built paths around lakes so would be good for wheel chairs etc too if needed. Parking bit of an issue because you could only get out with contactless payment using a bank card no one in the UK is ever going to hold, so had to get staff to let us out with cash. See more..

  18. 4.5 Park van Tervuren (67 reviews)
    - Lovely park
Spent More than 3 hours Bodies of Water • Parks
    Park van Tervuren image
We picked up a large map of the park at the Visit Tervuren visitors’ centre and took an enjoyable stroll along canals and ponds on a sunny October Sunday afternoon. The landscaped park offers lovely views on the neo-classical museum palace (1904-1909), modelled on the Petit Palais in Paris, and the smaller Palace of Colonies or Africa Palace (1897) modelled on the Petit Trianon. There is a smattering of old statues, most of them close to the Colonial Palace and the museum. To the east of the garden there is an interesting contemporary fountain entitled “The Congo, I presume”, by Belgian artist Tom Frantzen. In recent times it has been vandalised twice despite the fact that the ensemble is clearly critical of the colonial policy of Belgian King Leopold II in Africa. A clear case of misdirected iconoclasm. See more..
  19. 4.5 St-Martin's Basilica (65 reviews)
    - Stupendous church
    Wednesday: 8:30 AM - 6:30 PM Spent 1-2 hours Churches & Cathedrals
    St-Martin's Basilica image
The Basilica of St Martin is the only reason why the small Flemish town of Halle has been graced with two stars in the Green Michelin Guide. As Halle is only ten minutes by train from Brussels, we really wonder why it took us so long to visit this stupendous church. There is so much to be seen the basilica is a whole museum of medieval religious art in itself. We picked up a brochure for sale at the back of the church, containing a floor plan, fifteen good-quality pictures and detailed descriptions of the interior. We regretted not having brought binoculars to examine the famous 14th century apostle statues because they are very high up and difficult to see with the naked eye. The crypt was closed, an extra reason to come back. See more..

    - Abbey and Beer
    Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals

    - Beautiful castle and surrounding gardens
    Spent 2-3 hours Gardens
    Chateau de Grand-Bigard image
I visited here with some friends when the Florilia Brussels event was being held here in 2021. The millions of flowers were stunningly beautiful. With the castle as a backdrop the event was really spectacular. The castle grounds are larger than I expected. I'm not sure if the castle is open regularly to the public, but whenever it is open I recommend a visit. Great day our for family and friends. See more..
  22. 4.0 Leuven Train Station (390 reviews)
    - Brussels Airport to Leuven Train Station
    Architectural Buildings
    Leuven Train Station image
The trains depart from Brussels airport Zaventemon quite regularly to Leuven. It's takes 9 minutes to walk to the platform (3) with a train journey of 21 minutes. I had pre-purchased a SNCB (Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Belges) /NRCB (National Railway Company of Belgium) train ticket. With it being a weekend, they offered half-price travel for the day with a return trip from 7 p.m. Friday until Sunday available in 1st and 2d class to any destination in Belgium. 1st class carriages are marked with a yellow stripe above the windows and each carriage is marked with a one or two to signify which class it is. Leuven station is situated in the centre Leuven and is well laid out, with a steady stroll up Bondgenotenlaan towards Saint Peter's Church, the Grote Market and the Gothic town hall. See more..
  23. 4.0 M - Museum Leuven (342 reviews)
    - What A Great Museum
    Wednesday: Speciality Museums
    M - Museum Leuven image
Sometimes I think when people visit Belgium, they hit Ghent, Bruges, Antwerp, and Brussels, but Leuven gets ignored. This museum was really great. It was one of my favorite museums I visited in Belgium (and I visited many). There was a lot of variety in the types of art represented and there were some really interesting exhibits. The museum is very kid-friendly, too. I don't have kids, but I like how accessible the museum tries to make art for the younger generation. One piece of art I saw at this museum was a sculpture of The Prodigal Son. It moved me to tears. The audio guide they provide is also great, and mine was programmed in English. It really supplemented my experience. It took me about two hours to get through everything. Well worth it. See more..

    Saint Peter's Church (Sint-Pieterskerk) image

  25. 4.0 Stella Artois Brewery (127 reviews)
    - Once we found it, a great visit.
    Spent 1-2 hours Breweries
    Stella Artois Brewery image
Finding the start of the tour is not that easy (the map on the ticket from the tourist office is not that great) but we arrived just a few moments before 1. Once kitted out with our hi-vis jackets 25 of us were taken first to a little film about the history of the brewery, and brewing in Leuven, before visiting the brewing hall and finally on to bottling. The guide was knowledgeable, and seeing the process on such a massive scale was fascinating. Once we had finished the tour we were given a glass of standard Stella as a sample, and then further samples of some of the other beers brewed by them were available. Soft drinks were available for those who don't drink beer. A small, and remarkably well priced, gift shop was open whilst we sampled the fare. Finally it was time to take a bag of samples and walk all the way back to the start, in time to hand our jackets to the 3pm tour. See more..
  26. 4.0 Abdij van Park (111 reviews)
    - A viisit to the PARCUM museum is a must
Spent 2-3 hours Historic Sites • Parks
    Abdij van Park image
The promise that this site and the PARCUM museum would be better starting from the end of 2018 became a reality - they currently have a nice exhibition about war & religion - a big plus of visiting the exhibition also gives a nice opportunity to see a renovated wing of the historical building- and if you would visit on Friday, Saturday or Sunday at 2PM, there is a extra opportunity to get a guided tour through the abbey. See more..

    Provinciedomein Huizingen image
This park is south of Brussels and amazing. Until March 31st, entry to the park is free (so a number of attractions are not open yet). There is a great playground with sand, multiple parkour courses, a pool, a restaurant in a little castle, trampolines, car course for kids, animals, lots of open space and trails, a competitive running track...we've been twice and haven't seen everything. After April 1st, it's only a few Euros to get in. The park is huge and beautiful. See more..
