  2. 4.5 Biscuit Basin (460 reviews)
    - Make sure to see Sapphire Pool
    Geologic Formations
    Biscuit Basin image
We actually walked from the Upper Geyser Basin to Biscuit Basin which is actually kind of a long walk but you do get to see Artemisia Geyser along the way. The distance from Old Faithful to Biscuit Basin is around 2 miles one way. It took us around 3 hours to see the Upper Geyser Basin, walk to Biscuit, see Biscuit and walk back. Once you are at Biscuit Basin, the entire trail is only .7 miles long. We came on Thursday (9/3) and the crowds weren't that bad. However, going into Labor Day weekend, the traffic got progressively worse as Labor Day got closer. If you choose not to walk to Biscuit from Upper Geyser, there is a small parking lot for Biscuit Basin. Make sure to stop by the Sapphire Pool. It is a deep blue color! See more..

  4. 4.5 Ayres Natural Bridge (169 reviews)
    - Beautiful and relaxing
    Spent 1-2 hours Geologic Formations
    Ayres Natural Bridge image
Beautiful sites, area well maintained and enjoyed by all. People visiting area was so friendly and offered food that they had grilled. Amazed that they leave checker pieces and tic tac toe pieces at picnic tables for families to enjoy. Could have spent hours there if would have known ahead of time how relaxing it was there as well as all the areas of entertainment for children. Only recommendation is that the merri go round is replaced or removed as multiple children were spun off while riding. Also no cell service in area. ( could be a positive or negative) . See more..

  6. 4.0 Register Cliffs (123 reviews)
    - Fun To Find Mid-1800s Engravings
    Geologic Formations
    Register Cliffs image
It is fun to walk along the cliff to read the different engravings people did back in the mid-1800s. You can see the difference in the "font" people carved their names and dates in. Much of the cliff was fenced off to stop people from carving their names in all the way up to present day. See more..
  7. 4.5 Independence Rock State Historic Site (122 reviews)
    - You can climb the rock!
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Geologic Formations
Independence Rock State Historic Site image
I wish I would have known you can climb the rock before I got there because I wasn't wearing the best shoes but I was able to climb 2/3 of the way up easily. It was so fun to mix history with some physical activity here. It should be noted that the area around the rock is surrounded by open range, and we watched two bulls fighting at a distance of about 200 ft for almost an hour. If you're nearby I highly recommend a visit here. See more..
  8. 4.5 Flaming Gorge - Uintas National Scenic Byway (73 reviews)
    - A Must Do!
Spent More than 3 hours Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Canyons • Dams • Geologic Formations
Flaming Gorge - Uintas National Scenic Byway image
If you are pressed for time, I strongly encourage you to NOT try to drive the complete scenic byway AND drive it on a beautiful day when you can stop long enough to appreciate everything and take some photos before continuing on this journey. Take plenty of water, snacks, a good pair of hiking shoes, a great camera, and a map of the flaming gorge scenic byway before you venture out. We had a great time and as recommended by many, we also drove the Sheep Creek Geological Loop. Unfortunately, we only drove half of that loop before arriving at road closure, so we had to double back. Maybe this was due to the previous week weather, but It was still worth it and I highly recommend taking that loop. See more..
  9. 4.0 Boars Tusk (28 reviews)
    - Monolithic and breathtaking
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Geologic Formations
    Boars Tusk image
What a great day to visit, skies were wide open. Half the drive is on a hard packed dirt road. Next leg on a firm narrow dirt offroad. Last leg on a sandy more rutted offroad. Any standard suv/truck should be fine. Not many turnarounds so fortunately not much traffic right now, only seeing one car. Its a casual hour out of Rock Springs and while you can see this little spaceship thinh from the highway, by the time you get halfway looks like the land to Oz. The closer you get it feela like you ar "Roland approaching the Dark Tower" and I felt like a gunslinger. Saw a couple antelopes along the way and boy was it quiet. A really nice monolith and totally worth my visit. See more..
