It was a very nice campground ⛺️. We didn’t take full advantage of what they had to offer, pool, small bar or playground. Really nicely located to downtown Lincoln Nebraska and Omaha. Only thing for two days no soap in bathroom and no bench in shower. Otherwise really nice people and the grounds are keep really nice. See more..
  2. 3.5 Louisville State Recreation Area (30 reviews)
    - A One Night Stay as Heading West
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Louisville State Recreation Area image
As others have said, the railroad track is close by and trains are running all night. Bring earplugs. Our first night on a 16 day trip heading west, we camped one night in the A.C. Nelsen Camping Area 2 - the outhouse was the absolute worst smelling of our trip and for recent memory. Plus it had NO toilet paper! Other campgrounds had some scent in the outhouses to help with the smell, highly recommend the campground does this. The view of the Platte River was beautiful in the early morning. See more..

  10. 3.0 Chevyland (12 reviews)
    - Nice for the price
    Speciality Museums
    Chevyland image
OK, this is not so much a museum as a motley collection. I was glad to have visited because I am a car freak and the price, $6.00, was reasonable. The good: Lots of interesting things to see in addition to the cars, including small parts, dealer posters, charts and other dealer small bits. My favorites were the '58 Chevy with the huge aftermarket A/C unit atop the center hump and plugged into the cigarette lighter, and two Suzuki RE5 rotary engined motorcycles. I also liked the mid 1960s Honda cycles. The bad: Everything needed dusting, many cars had one or more flat tires, there were battery chargers, jacks, and miscellaneous tools just scattered. Tools and etc looked like they had been just dropped and not placed for display. The dealer posters and other paper stuff were warped and bubbled from time and humidity. I enjoyed my visit and would recommend this "museum" but wanted people to have a realistic expectation of what they will see. See more..
  11. 3.5 Le Smash (11 reviews)
    - Surprise stress reliever
    Game & Entertainment Centers
    Le Smash image
After a rough couple of months, my husband surprised me with a session at Le Smash. It wasn't what I had envisioned but it definitely served it's purpose. 30mins flew by and I felt better. Most of the things you wanted to do as a kid but didn't want to risk getting in trouble for...this is the place. If you don't like small spaces and the smell of beer, you'll be fine. And you can pick your own music to smash too. See more..
  12. 3.5 Robidoux Trading Post (9 reviews)
    - A Sidebar to Pioneer History
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Robidoux Trading Post image
This site, located at Robideux Pass, lies on the initial trail established by the early fur traders and Oregon Trail pioneers. This pass was the forerunner of Mitchell Pass at Scott's Bluff National Monument. Historical markers indicate the original site, but the current Robideux Trading Post is a replica. It is located some distance south of Scott's Bluff National Monument, accessed primarily through miles of dirt/gravel roads. A map to this attraction is available at the front desk of Scott's Bluff National Monument. The best way to access this site with very little travel on gravel road is to proceed south from Gering on Hwy 7, turning West on Carter Canyon Rd. From the point the pavement ends on Carter Canyon Road, it is exactly two miles to the building. Check with the Park Service about events or reenactments that might open the building to the public. Townsley-Murdock Immigrant Trail Site image
Our GPS went crazy trying to locate this site seeing adventure. We had to stop and ask locals to help find this place. The locals didn't even know but, did know the names of roads getting there. We went 3 more miles as a gas attendant suggested and we just happen to see the sign. After looking at tracks we drove down 500' to turned around to leave and then we seen another marker explaining everything-WOW! We would have missed this for sure so we spent another 20 mins reading and looking for tracks. All I can say is they need markers because it is a neat place indeed! See more..

  19. 3.5 Summit Lake State Recreation Area (6 reviews)
    - Average campground
Spent More than 3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Scenic Walking Areas
Summit Lake State Recreation Area image
Summit Lake is a nice little quiet campground. The lake is huge! There are plenty of picnic tables to just go for a picnic. There were electric sites for RV’s and non-electric for tent camping. Seems like a great place for fishing because there are several gravel piers. There is no office or camp store for ice etc. But you can make a quick drive into Tekamah for needed items. There is a playground for the kids and a nice area for swimming in the lake. I was impressed that the outhouses were handicap accessible. Sadly they were not flushies. I do not know if the other parts of the park have flushing toilets. If you have a horse the lake seems to be a popular for horseback riding on the many trails. I would recommend Summit Lake. See more..
  20. 3.0 Snake River Falls (6 reviews)
    - Worth the time.
    Spent < 1 hour Waterfalls
    Snake River Falls image
Just a short ride (22) miles from Valentine on HWY 97. If you cross the Merritt cannel you missed the turn. The road to the Falls is on the west side of 97 back about 1/4 mile from cannel crossing. The falls are on privet property owner by the Sportsman Club. There is two paths to view the falls one on the right side of club house and the other to the left side of club house. Both are dirt walks so be careful. See more..
  21. 3.5 Hilltop Mall (6 reviews)

  22. 3.5 Centennial Hall (5 reviews)
    - Fascinating concept, weird visitor policy.
    Spent 1-2 hours History Museums
    Centennial Hall image
As this was among the only non-outdoor recreation related "Things to Do" in Valentine, we were eager to explore, and looked forward to documenting the history captured in this preservation project. Beautiful building and a few interesting period artifacts, but oddly, this is the only museum in 43 states we've visited that does not allow pictures, even with waivers or permissions. Particularly strange, as the Hall has no website and we could find no promotion of it anywhere but on TripAdvisor. Very disappointing. As a retiring teacher, it would have been a great photo memory for my students. Worth the visit for personal curiosity, but nothing to take from it but memory. See more..
  23. 3.0 The Cowpoke (4 reviews)
    - Sports bar with lots of beer, hearty food; but can be crowded on a night with a big sports event on TV
    Bars & Clubs
    The Cowpoke image
The Cowpoke has been a fixture in downtown Thedford NE for decades, frequented by very enthusiastic locals. The 'Poke takes pride in its selection of beer and huge servings of food from the heartland. After a recommendation from a clerk at a nearby service station a friend and I stopped in for an early supper. I had a hearty meal of ribs, beans and 'slaw, and I appreciated that the coleslaw was homemade (tangy!). My traveling buddy had a smothered burrito platter-- hot, spicy and filling with homemade spanish rice. All this was washed down with icy cold beer. Food and drinks arrived promptly. The waitress was friendly, chatting with us about local Thedford happenings. The restrooms were spare, but clean. We were there on a Friday night, and a number of locals drifted in to watch Ice Hockey on the big TV screens. After suitable amounts of beer were imbibed, the place livened up to the point where it was getting a bit noisy, so we left. See more..

  26. 3.5 Memphis Lake State Recreation Area (3 reviews)
    - Hidden gem.
Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Parks
A very quiet State Rec area. A tornado a few years back threw leaves into the lake. When they decomposed they took all of the oxygen out of the water and all the fish died. They took this as an opportunity to dredge it, add fish jetty's and other additions to create a healthier lake. Great spot for families. See more..

    - Amazing

It is a very amazing place. They have pool to play and a game room for the little ones. The food is amazing I would recommend the wings or one of the wraps. The waitress were pretty good and the owners are amazing people. Anyway, this is an amazing restaurant to eat at and they also let you call in and throw parties. They are also having a Valentines comedy show on the 14th and the 15th and I can't wait to see it. I defiantly recomend this place. See more..

  32. 3.5 Wildwood Golf Course (2 reviews)
    - Nice Hometown Course
    Spent 2-3 hours Golf Courses
If you're looking for a high-end golf course, this is not the place although it is a fun round for relaxing golf. The course is small town rustic with a few interesting and challenging holes. Water, some sand (not well maintained traps), with tricky undulating greens that make for some interesting putts that need to be well read. We played the course during the fall season and were given carts for free and even a reduced price on beer as they were looking to reduce inventory before closing for the season. We had a great time and would be happy to come back. See more..

Box Butte Reservoir State Recreation Area image
First time here, when the lake was rather low for dam toe drain replacement, still busy with people on a summer Sunday afternoon. Nice campsite deep in trees, and a fun kayak tour of the lake. However, was disappointed by the new and old trash all over campgrounds and out on the shorelines. It doesn't appear that anyone cares enough to do regular clean-up, including park staff. I picked up and deposited a lot of stray garbage. See more..

Fabric/notion store with a ton of fabric. Unfortunately it could use some organization. Some of the fabric bolts are 2 deep, which makes it really hard to see the ones in back. The staff was very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Because it is an old building, it has that old building smell, along with uneven floors and weirdly shaped steps. Found some unique items and they have lots of pattern examples too, so the hunt was fruitful. See more..

  41. 3.0 Yellowthroat Wildlife Management Area (1 review)
    - Abundant waterfowl, muskrats and turtles for birders, fishers and hunters
Monday: 7:00 AM - 8:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Yellowthroat Wildlife Management Area image
Yellowthroat Wildlife Management area has a small lake on the east side and an extensive marsh on the west side. The lake is open to fishing, hunting and boating (paddles and electric motors only). The marsh is used by diverse waterfowl (teals, mallards, mergansers, coot, and wood ducks) for nesting. There is a beaver lodge in the lake, and you might spot muskrats, night herons, terns, and snapping turtles feeding in the lake or marsh edges. The area is little visited with no amenities aside from the boat launch. Wildlife is active early in he morning or just before dusk. Birdwatching is especially good during spring and fall migration. Drive south of Ainsworth, NE on route 7 about 15 miles. Look for the Yellowthroat WMA sign on the east side of the road. Follow the dirt road about a mile to the boat launch. The WMA is open from sunrise to sunset. Fires, overnight camping and driving off road is prohibited. There is no admission charge. See more..

  45. 3.0 Ballards Marsh Wildlife Management Area (1 review)
    - Secluded camping in the Sandhills with nearby hunting and fishing
Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent More than 3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
Ballards Marsh Wildlife Management Area image
Ballards March Wildlife Management Area is about 20 miles south of Valentine, NE on US Highway 83 in the heart of Nebraska's sandhills. The large marsh and adjacent grasslands are managed by Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. It is a great place to see common birds and wildflowers of the sandhills. Perhaps you will hear a coyote or see the bald eagles which nest in trees just up the road. A free primitive campground is available with room for a half-dozen tents or trailers. There are a couple of picnic tables, fire boxes, a hand-operated water pump and an outhouse. The gravel loop road allows easy maneuvering for trailers. The campground is well shaded by large elms and is a delightful stop for a picnic during the summer. I camped here in late June, and had the place to myself. I was delighted to hear the trill of meadowlarks and the chirp of crickets and see fireflies at night. Staying at Ballards Marsh allows an early start for those who want to fish, hunt or watch birds at Valentine National Wildlife Refuge (about 3 miles to the South on Route 83). See more..
