    Boot Hill Cemetery image
It became known as Boot Hill during the Texas Trail era of the 1880s, when unlucky cowboys were often buried with their boots on. During lawless times, rough cowhands and opportunistic criminals flooded the community of Ogallala in the 1870s. Trail boss' refused to let his cowhands come into Ogallala because of its wild and unsavory reputation – a popular phase became to be known that Ogallala was the “town too tough for Texans.” Boot Hill was abandoned in early 1885. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that there was an effort to treat Boot Hill with some honor. They cleaned up the hill, planted trees and made new wooden markers. Located in residential neighborhood. Street parking. It has two entrances: one with a number of stairs and the second one is around the block with handicap ramp for access. Free brochures and information plaques along walkway. Some have written that the cemetery is unkept. I appreciate that it looks authentic to time period. See more..

    Fort McPherson National Cemetery image
Traveling cross country with my sister and mother, we saw the sign for Fort McPherson National Cemetery and took the exit. Not too far off the highway we turned into the cemetery and saw the rows upon rows of headstones of military members and some family members. It was sad to see so many marked "Unknown." The cemetery is in a beautiful area. It was late afternoon, interesting shadows were playing across the landscape and the sprinklers were on, casting rainbows across the headstones. See more..

Still fairly new as there aren't that many headstones out there. There appeared to be two service areas and an office as well as two sections with headstones. See more..

A person needs to get off the main road to locate this jewel. It is on a paved road in a unlikely spot. This would be good for a quick educational stop. There are no services or refreshments located on this premises. See more..
