We had come a long way to see this. And I myself was pleasantly surprised as it isnt my thing, my husband chose the location to visit. But it was beautiful. We got there ar 545pm on June 9 and the visitors centre was closing at 6 and they werent allowing people to drive up the road till 9am the next morning. But the view of the area were amazing, the lighting added to that. It is well worth a visit. We had a quick look around the visitors centre which was very informative even for the short amount of time we were in there. We came back the following morning for opening at 9am so we could drive up to the top. What lovely views. There is a little walk you can do for more pics. You will need to keep small children under control as I cant remember any railings. See more..
  2. 4.5 South Overlook (22 reviews)
    - Short, Easy Walk to Breath-taking View

This trail is located inside the boundaries of Scotts Bluff National Monument so an entrance fee is required ($3/person or NPS pass). The trailhead is at a large parking area on top of the bluff. There are three ways to reach it: drive your vehicle up Summit Rd. (1.6 miles from the Visitor Center), hike up the Saddle Rock Trail (1.6 Miles from the Visitor Center), or ride the shuttle bus (seasonal). The trail is paved and only .4 mile long - a sidewalk, really. The grade is not very steep and we were able to take a wheelchair to the viewpoint that overlooks the Visitor Center, Mitchell Pass, and the Oregon Trail. There isn't any shade so be prepared for sun exposure. See more..

What an amazing find!! Beautiful park with lake access, perfect for the dogs to run, swim and play! Even has an area to rinse your dog before leaving. Only thing I’d recommend is a few more areas of shade on the beach. But we and our dogs had a blast! Budweiser, Latke and Clover all say thank you for having us! See more..
  5. 3.5 Summit Lake State Recreation Area (6 reviews)
    - Average campground

Summit Lake is a nice little quiet campground. The lake is huge! There are plenty of picnic tables to just go for a picnic. There were electric sites for RV’s and non-electric for tent camping. Seems like a great place for fishing because there are several gravel piers. There is no office or camp store for ice etc. But you can make a quick drive into Tekamah for needed items. There is a playground for the kids and a nice area for swimming in the lake. I was impressed that the outhouses were handicap accessible. Sadly they were not flushies. I do not know if the other parts of the park have flushing toilets. If you have a horse the lake seems to be a popular for horseback riding on the many trails. I would recommend Summit Lake. Cloisters on the platte image
I am from Florida and was amazed what a wonderful treasure Cloister on the Platte is in Nebraska. The Bronze Stations of the Cross captured the emotion in a natural surroundings of trees and streams. Weekend retreats are available year round. It took about 1 hour to walk through the stations and each person receives a headset to listen to the commentary. This should be at the top of your list in visiting Nebraska!
