Mormon Trail Center at Historic Winter Quarters image
We visited the Trail Center at Winter Quarters when we were passing through Omaha. The missionary couple working that day greeted us warmly and gave us a wonderful personal tour ( we were the only people ). It is interesting to see how the early pioneers lived and basically survived while at Winter Quarters. The grounds are very nice as well. You can see actual pioneer graves and there are many statues depicting the struggles these pioneers endured. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints owns and runs the property and there is also a small temple. I would recommend stopping by for a visit if you belong to the church or not. We had a great visit. See more..

  4. 4.0 Boot Hill Cemetery (93 reviews)
    - The forgotten cemetery
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Historic Walking Areas • Cemeteries • Ghost Towns
    Boot Hill Cemetery image
It became known as Boot Hill during the Texas Trail era of the 1880s, when unlucky cowboys were often buried with their boots on. During lawless times, rough cowhands and opportunistic criminals flooded the community of Ogallala in the 1870s. Trail boss' refused to let his cowhands come into Ogallala because of its wild and unsavory reputation – a popular phase became to be known that Ogallala was the “town too tough for Texans.” Boot Hill was abandoned in early 1885. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that there was an effort to treat Boot Hill with some honor. They cleaned up the hill, planted trees and made new wooden markers. Located in residential neighborhood. Street parking. It has two entrances: one with a number of stairs and the second one is around the block with handicap ramp for access. Free brochures and information plaques along walkway. Some have written that the cemetery is unkept. I appreciate that it looks authentic to time period. See more..

  8. 5.0 World's Largest Porch Swing (16 reviews)
    - Great little attraction and really friendly neighbors!
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks
    World's Largest Porch Swing image
We stopped by, and a man from the senior housing across the street came and gave us a pin with a picture of the swing on it. He told us a little about it, and there's an informational sign, too. The swing itself was a fun place to take pictures -- from one end to the next, lying down, all into one frame, etc. It's very well made and looks like someone keeps it clean, and since it has a roof over it, there weren't any bird droppings to wipe off before sitting down. 9. 4.5 Panorama Point (15 reviews)
    - Absolutely incredible

    Panorama Point image
Nebraska's highpoint is a spectacular place to visit. After following dirt county roads for miles, you end up at 5,424 feet at elevation at the highest point in the state. You are surrounded by farmland, and are looking across scenic views of Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming. You feel like you're the only person within 20 miles. This would be a great place to visit just for the feeling of complete remoteness, but add in visiting a state highpoint and it makes Panorama Point really awesome. See more..

  11. 4.0 Rebecca Winters Memorial (15 reviews)
    - So sad
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
    Rebecca Winters Memorial image
The Rebecca Winters’ gravesite is one of the few graves of the 6,000 Latter-day Saint pioneers who died while making the journey across the plains to the West. She was traveling in the James C. Snow Company in 1852 when an outbreak of cholera took her life. William F. Reynolds inscribed her name and age onto a discarded iron tire. It reads, “Rebecca Winters – Age 50.” Several individuals traveling west made mention of the grave as they passed it while traveling through the area. In 1902, when surveyors were planning the Burlington Railroad through the area, the grave with the iron tire was again discovered. The railroad decided to redirect the rail line out of respect for this noble pioneer mother who died on the plains. Also, the railroad constructed a small fence around the grave to help protect it. Fort McPherson National Cemetery image
Traveling cross country with my sister and mother, we saw the sign for Fort McPherson National Cemetery and took the exit. Not too far off the highway we turned into the cemetery and saw the rows upon rows of headstones of military members and some family members. It was sad to see so many marked "Unknown." The cemetery is in a beautiful area. It was late afternoon, interesting shadows were playing across the landscape and the sprinklers were on, casting rainbows across the headstones. See more..

  16. 3.5 Robidoux Trading Post (9 reviews)
    - A Sidebar to Pioneer History
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Robidoux Trading Post image
This site, located at Robideux Pass, lies on the initial trail established by the early fur traders and Oregon Trail pioneers. This pass was the forerunner of Mitchell Pass at Scott's Bluff National Monument. Historical markers indicate the original site, but the current Robideux Trading Post is a replica. It is located some distance south of Scott's Bluff National Monument, accessed primarily through miles of dirt/gravel roads. A map to this attraction is available at the front desk of Scott's Bluff National Monument. The best way to access this site with very little travel on gravel road is to proceed south from Gering on Hwy 7, turning West on Carter Canyon Rd. From the point the pavement ends on Carter Canyon Road, it is exactly two miles to the building. Check with the Park Service about events or reenactments that might open the building to the public. Scott Lookout Tower image
To All who have been to and appreciated this location through the years and to those who hoped to visit but hadn't yet: Last night (10/2/22) another terrible fire burned through Halsey National Forest. The tower was consumed in flames along with the state 4-H lodge and cabins just up the road. As many mentioned here, this tower offered a breathtaking view of the hills and forest. I hope that they will rebuild it so that future generations (including my kids) can go and take in the same majesty that so many experienced through the years. See more..
  19. 3.5 Summit Lake State Recreation Area (6 reviews)
    - Average campground
Spent More than 3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Scenic Walking Areas
Summit Lake State Recreation Area image
Summit Lake is a nice little quiet campground. The lake is huge! There are plenty of picnic tables to just go for a picnic. There were electric sites for RV’s and non-electric for tent camping. Seems like a great place for fishing because there are several gravel piers. There is no office or camp store for ice etc. But you can make a quick drive into Tekamah for needed items. There is a playground for the kids and a nice area for swimming in the lake. I was impressed that the outhouses were handicap accessible. Sadly they were not flushies. I do not know if the other parts of the park have flushing toilets. If you have a horse the lake seems to be a popular for horseback riding on the many trails. I would recommend Summit Lake. I am from Florida and was amazed what a wonderful treasure Cloister on the Platte is in Nebraska. The Bronze Stations of the Cross captured the emotion in a natural surroundings of trees and streams. Weekend retreats are available year round. It took about 1 hour to walk through the stations and each person receives a headset to listen to the commentary. This should be at the top of your list in visiting Nebraska! The courthouse has a stunning and beautiful - it's a much different style than most of the 1930's-era WPA-built courthouses. The interior is no different than other Great Plains courthouses. I went to do genealogical research, and the staff in the offices were friendly and helpful. See more..

We stopped here as part of the Nebraska Passport. This is a huge lake that has RV parking right up to the lakes edge. It was really cool to see the RV's with the kayaks and jet ski's in the water right next to them. The eroding sandhills provide a breathtaking backdrop to the dark blue lake. If you follow the entrance road it will lead to a lighthouse. You can walk up to the top for a great view of the area. See more..

    Harold Lloyd Birthplace image
This place is certainly out of the way but if you're a fan of the silent comedian or the early stars of Hollywood and in the area it's worth a little detour to visit. This is the house where Harold Lloyd was born. It's in the middle of a very small town buried in backroads of Nebraska. You have to call to make an appointment to tour through the building. The woman who runs it, Esther, is very friendly and accommodating. Inside there are some actual possessions of Lloyd's donated by his family. You can watch one of his films and just get a sense of what it was like to live here in the early days. See more..

    - Expectedly cool!

    Sentinels of the Prarie image
Unexpected and very cool place right on the highway. I didn’t know it existed until I was driving by on my trip to North Dakota, and it I found it to be pretty darn awesome. Each old windmill had a history plaque of how old it (probably) was, where it was found, who made it. It is right in front of landfill, but I detected no smell in the half hour I was there. And while I was there, a freight train went by (the tracks are in between where the windmills are and the landfill) - that was pretty exciting for a city dweller! Don’t miss this site, you won’t be disappointed in the fun of it. See more..
