Make sure you know how to get in before going

By visiting the Museum of the Roman Theatre you will encounter one of the most surprising discoveries of the city in the last decades. Thanks to the ingenious design of the architect Rafael Moneo, you will start your tour of the Palace of Riquelme, the first building of the museum, and then follow the historical hallway located under the street to then move to the new space that collects the most emblematic pieces of all found in the excavations. Using modern stairs you will come to the second tunnel, this time is under the medieval church of Santa Maria, a construction superimposed to the old theatre which increases its uniqueness and attraction. After this, the second corridor, will take you to the most relevant part of the museum, the Roman Theatre, one of the largest in the Roman Hispania with capacity for 7,000 people.

    Spectacular museum
What a great museum, you enter at street level opposite the City Hall and emerge into the amphitheatre via 2 other buildings. All the signage is in Spanish and English and its easy to follow the history of the site and some of the finds from the area. We spent over 2 hours here and could easily have spent longer. We went in late September when the Roman festival was on in town. The weather was perfect for being out all day, 28C and afterwards we watched the legionnaires march through the town.

    Sensitively excavated roman theatre
Four of us visited in late January in glorious sunny weather. It was marvellous to witness the large amphitheatre as it would have been over 2000 years ago and to imagine the huge crowds who would witnessed dramas on the large stage. When the Palacio de las Condesa de Peralto was demolished in 1987, the theatre was exposed. The architect Rafael Moneo was tasked with creating a series of museums each leading through various inter-linking levels to the amphitheatre itself. We found the whole experience very informative and inspiring. The history is clearly displayed and demonstrates the ingenuity of the Romans and the careful excavation that took place once the buried remains were found. It is certainly worth every cent of the 5 euro entrance fee that is offered to senior citizens. There is a carpark a few hundred yards from the theatre so it is easy to access. We would recommend a visit if you are in the Murcia region.
