German Oceanographic Museum (Deutsches Meeresmuseum) image
Visited the museum with two kids (6 and 8 years old). Had thought it was relatively small now that they had build the new Oceaneum too, but it just went on and on. We used a lot of time in there. Lots of displays and information on fishing, boats, the sea and oceans, a large area with aquariums with exotic fish. See more..

I spent a good hour in here looking around every bit of the sub. I'm on the merchant navy myself so found it even more appealing. You don't have any set time limit so you don't feel rushed. I got a great feel for how life must have been onboard. Entry price was good as well as the little gift shop. Nothing was overpriced. My only issue was the signs were only in Germany. It's a tourist attraction so feel some of the signs and information needs to be translated into more languages. Great fun. See more..

The amber museum is located about half an hour's drive from the city of Rostock. It is next to the monastery in Ribnitz, and is one of the largest exhibitions of amber in Europe. The main exhibition is located on the first floor. Excellent presentation with magnifying glasses places in front of pieces with small insects and plants. Upstairs it was possible to have a closer look on how amber can be polished etc. See more..

    Hangar-10 Heringsdorf image
My husband is an aviation enthusiast, I am a little less knowledgeable. However, my husband doesn't have a trip advisor account so on both of our behalf - he was in 7th heaven (excuse the pun). This museum has many exceptional old planes, and the extraordinary thing about them is that they all fly. I believe you do have to know about aircraft to be quite as enthusiastic as us though, since the information about the history of the aircraft isn't particularly extensive. There is a huge play area for those with small children, a small café area and a good shop. See more..

We were lucky to have great weather when we went to the Freilichtmuseum. Booking a private 90 min tour was perfect with the kids. The lady told us a lot about the way people lived in the past and how live was. In between the kids could always play and relax a bit on the many "playgrounds" they have within the museum. The restaurant was also excellent! See more..

To be able to fly like the birds is a dream that is as old as mankind. Welcome to the Otto Lilienthal Museum, the museum for the Pomeranian Icarus born in Anklam, who, 130 years ago, actually gave wings to mankind. Moreover, the Brothers Lilienthal were particularly creative and versatile personalities of the latter days of the 19th century. If you visit the Historiches-Technical museum, take the time to go on this tour too. It takes you into the restricted area of the site where there is normally no access. Our tour guide, Ralf, was very knowledgeable and told the fascinating story of the test site. We got off at 3-4 different stops and was shown around, where we saw the launch site, train tracks and other fascinating remains. The place has that eerie feeling of having been totally deserted and nature has now taken over - a bit like I imagine Chernobyl to be. The tour lasts 90 minutes and cost only 12 euro per person - very reasonably priced if you ask me. See more..

The title of this "museum" is confusing. I prefer the word "collection". It is much more than a museum of technical items and bikes. This is a very large collection of every day items from DDR times: cars, bikes, buses, tractors, radios, TVs, toys, kitchen utensils, washing powder - everything imaginable! Anyone who knew the DDR or who lived in the west in the time of the DDR, will find a lot of fascinating items to remind them of those days. See more..

Reconstructed from archaeologic excavations on the site this is a fine example of time before time existed. It's situated in a wooded area with at a lake. There is so much to do for kids and teenagers! Canoe along the channel like the people at the time did, flour making and baking like they did in the stone age, make a rug with the same material the ancient people used. And for grown ups sometimes you can make iron tools. It's a more rural area there so brush up on your German a bit before you go See more..

    Heimatmuseum Insel Poel image
We took a ferry from port Wismar to visit the Island. A whooping 12 Euro ticket, but the hilariously funny staff on board lets you forget this quickly. The crossover doesn't take an hour, there is just enough time to take in the view and to sip that pot of coffee. The small port at the Island is crowded around the eateries, very simple food places. But as we walked around, into the tiny church and over the cemetery and further through the village we encountered a single citizen who was a canine. The older houses, mostly renovated now, are kept in style of the place. They have few interesting small houses for rent there, others are more in modern accommodations. We ventured over the hill to try to get a glimpse of the water on the other side of the Island, but for that one would have to take the route around, along the water. Long time ago, the Island was used to house soldiers in a fortress. Now one can see a miniature replica of the area put up on an open piece of land in the village. Our trip back to the mainland was by the local bus. Turns out the gap between Island and main land is what looks like barely 5 meters. People staying on the Island go camping near the beaches, walk a lot or ride bicycles. The Island is quite ideal if you want to really relax. See more..

We ended up at the Burgmuseum when some extended family members were showing us around Plau Am See. The weather had been a bit rainy, and looking for an indoor activity, we ended up at this museum. It is a lovely little local/area history museum with staff members who are take pride in what it offers. The most interesting feature of the museum is that is has things that are still operational and that the staff will demonstrate for you. These include a magnifying/illumination mechanism used in shoe making in days-gone-by, printing press/type setting machines, and a steam power demo machine. The docent showed us all of these things "in action." I found the printing machines to be the most interesting. The upper level featured displays of historical bicycles, antique fishing equipment, and about animal trapping. The entrance fee was so low, we felt compelled to put something in the donation box at then end. Kids were 50 euro cents and adults I think were 2.50 euros. Everything is in German and the docent spoke only German. Our family is fortunate to have one fluent German speaker among us to interpret. However, even if you don't understand the language, the entrance fee is beyond reasonable, the physical displays will still be interesting, and you'll feel great about supporting this museum which is clearly a labor of love and civic pride for those who founded it and work there. - A glance at the past.
    Tuesday: Speciality Museums
    Regionalmuseum Neubrandenburg image
Neubrandenburg Regional Museum, founded in 19th century, is placed only stone throw from Fangelturm (defence tower). Located in a former Franciscan Monastery building from 13th century, is taking a visitor on a journey throughout the history of the city and surrounding it area. We were welcomed by rather grim exposition of the excavated fragment of battle field at Tollense Valley transferred there, the biggest battle of ancient times, where the three armies, from the east, south and north met at the ford on the River Tollense. In general, collection on the ground floor is dedicated to the history of the city starting from medieval times onward. First floor's exhibition told us story of city's industrial development and modern culture, and the upper floor took us back to the ancient times, when people lived a bit simpler life than nowadays. Outside of the old convent chambers, and within the cloister's walls, we have found some old friezes, column heads and other broken stonework from local churches and monastery gathered in there. What I like about local museums is that you can always find something interesting there, some pieces of information about our past, that for whatever reasons, can't be found in history books. Admission is not free, but this few quid that one have to pay won't ruin ones budget. There's also additional fee for those who like to take a photo inside the building. And all the bags need to be left in the locker room, which is free. That's probably all, what you need to remember of, if you wanna nip in over there. See more..
