We travelled independently to Rostock from our cruise ship instead of taking the cruise line's excursion to Berlin. The Warnemunde train station is a 10 min walk from the cruise terminal and day tickets by S-Bahn cost 6 Euro each. The train takes 21 mins to Rostock Hauptbahnhof and you can either walk to the city centre or take the tram, which is covered by the day ticket, we opted to walk one way. Our primary reason to visit Rostock was to see the Astronomical Clock dating back to 1472, amazing piece of engineering with the original clockworks, precision workmanship that works today after more than 5 centuries. The clock is wound everyday! Being a Sunday, most of the city was closed. We however walked the lovely streets & had a light lunch as well.See more..

As of March 2013, it cost 3 Euro to go up to the observation terrace, and it is absolutely worth it! It is quite a climb, often in somewhat tight spaces, but it is brilliant to see the various enormous bells and then ultimately continue on up to the observation terrace. The terrace provides the absolute best view of Greifswald you could ask for. Afterwards, we walked around the cathedral a bit and thoroughly enjoyed seeing this historical site.See more..

Just off of the main street this is a 'must see' in Rostock. Everywhere you look there is something different to see from the massive organ, stained glass windows, unusual astronomical clock, beautifully carved pulpit and altar and even a model of a ship hanging down. If you can get there for noon then do so to see the clock in action (as you go into the church turn right). As you come out of the church, turn right and go into the quaint tea shop (they also have a small garden area). We had 2 coffees and 2 large pieces of home made cake for 5 Euros!See more..
Disappointingly enough you can't get into the church itself, but if you crawl the flight of stairs to the tower you'll find a great view of the Saaler Bodden and into The Baltic Sea.See more..

A stand out Lutheran Gothic brick church. The tower collapsed in the 17th Century and, still tall, is not as high as it once was. The entrance area is jaw droppingly enormous and that's before you enter the church. Inside huge lanterns swoop down overhead from the high roof supported on octagonal columns. We saw a little boy having a fantastic time pretending he was a soldier and hiding behind them. The organ is stunning as is the trumpeting angel. You can climb the tower and have great views over Rugen island and the town below. Good frescoes in the squinches of the arches.See more..

Ganz toll gemacht mit liebevollen Details, Beschreibungen usw. Sehr interessantes Bauwerk! Übrigens: für die Kinder der Kirchengemeinde lag am Eingang ein großes Banner mit der Frage: „Was wünscht ihr (Kinder) euch von der Kirchengemeinde?“. Daneben lagen Stifte für die Wünsche. Klasse! Ich wünsche mir mehr so tolle Kirchen - hier wäre ich auch gern Teil der Kirchengemeinde. Vielleicht sollte man mal ein Projekt: „Offene Kirche nach dem Reriker-Modell“ starten. We came upon this red brick church with its characteristic west tower while walking from the New Market to the Old Market in Waren. It is said to date from the early 15th century but the brickwork shows several forms of repatching, so it probably has been modified or rebuilt several times. We repetedly tried to get in, but found St. Georgen closed, even on a Sunday, which came as a surprise to other passing tourists too. According to our travel guide the interior has been refurbished in Gothic Revival style in the 19th century, so we probably didn’t miss much. During our boat trip on the Binnenmüritz lake St. George’s provided an attractive landmark.See more..

Man traut es dem kleinen Städtchen Barth gar nicht zu, so eine große gotische Hallenkirche zu haben, noch dazu mit gut erhaltenen Wandmalereien. Von außen sieht sie zwar sehr groß, aber für eine gotische Kirche wenig filigran und kunstvoll aus, aber das sollte nicht unterschätzt oder abwertend betrachtet werden. Ein Besuch lohnt wirklich! Außerdem hat die Kirche mehrere sehr schöne Details, wie die kunstvoll geschnitzte Kanzel und den Altar. Die farbig abgesetzten Bögen des Gewölbes unterstreichen den emporstrebenden Charakter der Kirche, die eine angenehme Ruhe und Ehrwürdigkeit ausstrahlt. Auf der Empore erwartet den interessierten Besucher ein weiterer Schatz, eine Kirchenbibliothek mit jahrhundertealten Büchern. Auch der Klang der Orgel ist hörens- und sehenswert.

Wir machten einen ausgiebigen Spaziergang und kamen an dieser schönen kleinen Dorfkirche vorbei. Also rein. Die Dorfkirche ist mit liebe gepflegt und sehr sauber. Ein wenig Werbung für Veranstaltungen der Gemeinde und des Dorfes machen neugierig. Wir nahmen uns Zeit und lasen uns alles durch. Auch diese sehr alten Grabsteine beeindruckten uns.See more..

Das Gegenstück zur Klosterkirche (mit dem Orgelmuseum) ist die Stadtkirche auf der Insel-Seite von Malchow. Das neugotische Backsteingebäude ist erst um 1870 entstanden und hat diesen erhaben-ruhigen Stil aller Backsteinbauten im Norden der Republik. Das Innenleben ist schlicht und unter der Orgelempore kann man noch die "Winterkirche" erkennen, der einzig beheizbare Ort früher. Wir hatten das Glück an einer Sonderführung am "Tag der offenen Tür" (vielleicht nicht offiziell so genannt) teilzunehmen und kamen dadurch auch in sonst geschlossene Räume ! Das war sehr gut und informativ; und die Führende war auch für ein weiterführendes Gespräch sehr zugänglich.

Dieses wunderbare Gotteshaus ist sowohl von außen als auch von innen saniert worden. Die holzgeschnitzte Kanzel hat mich sehr beeindruckt. Das Innere beherbergt ein ungewöhnliches Altarbild. Es besteht aus 350 qm bemalten 1000 Pappmacheplatten. Die Orgel ist dahinter und der Kantor kann den Pastor nicht sehen Darum gibt zwei Gucklöcher in der Wand (ein Stück rechts vom kleinen unteren Engel). Dort schaute jemand durch und wenn der Pastor ein Zeichen gab, dann wurde es vom "Gucker" weiter an den Kantor gegebe.See more..

Oft vorbeigefahren, nie offen erlebt, aber jetzt gelang es, die Kirche zu besichtigen! Ein Kleinod in dem kleinem Ort ganz in der Nähe von Rostock. Die ältesten Teile stammen aus dem 14. Jahrhundert. Das Taufbecken aus Granit ist älter als die Kirche. Eine eher schlichte Dorfkirche, die dadurch auch besticht. Sehr hell, weiß mit einer wunderschönen alten Malerei. Der bekannte Doberaner Baumeister Möckel hatte hier noch Veränderungen vornehmen lassen, z.B. würden größere Fenster eingelassen, so dass der Raum heller wurde. Man kann schöne Holzplasiken sehen aus dem 15. Jahrhundert. Empfehlenswert, ebenso der Friedhof, wo man alte Gräber aus dem 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert findet. Sehr gepflegt, insgesamt einen Besuch wert.See more..

Abtshagen, is small village in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern province in north-east Germany located halfway between Grimmen and Stralsund. Cut in half by road number 194 leading to the north, village is hiding within its precinct a small gem, namely, Gothic Parochial Church dedicated to Holy Spirit (Heilgeistkirche = Holy Spirit's Church). Surrounded by small cemetery, and well visible from the road that is just passing by, red-brick church was completed in 1380. Massive, brick tower, that was planned to built; which is indicated by remnants of the wall; has never been finished. Instead of it, wooden bell tower was added to the structure of the church in 1667. However, original tower has not survived as it's been destroyed by arson in 1999 and then, rebuilt in year 2000. Church's simple, neo-gothic, interior is well preserved. Within his walls, bearing remains of old Medieval and Baroque paintings, medieval baptismal font can be found, and one of the very few preserved organs made by Carl August Buchholz, famous organ builder from Berlin. A simple 18th century epitaph of pastor Martin Partenius can also be seen in church. Renaissance preacher's stall, that is still there, was made around 1650. Original, Gothic, altar piece was replaced by Renaissance one, which is no longer there. I had a chance to look around church's interior thanks to the courtesy of the verger, who spotted me wandering around the church with photo camera and opened it for me. We had a little chat, and I'd learned some historical facts about the church from him. That was very kind of him. What a charming place, with serene atmosphere. Built around 1267, Church of Saint Mary is the oldest building in town. Austere, red brick building surrounded by trees is located to the north-west of small, old market square. Original, three-nave hall church, built on base made of field stones with walls supported by small buttresses, undergone throughout the centuries, some modifications. In 15th century the brick vaulted hall choir was added, and in 1436 Duke of Pomerania, Branim VIII founded chapel named after him the "Branim Chapel". Around the same time square tower was built on the west side of the church, and on the north side of it, two chapels, Agnes and Mauritius, were constructed. At the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries apse closing church's presbytery was added. Last modification to church's silhouette took a place in 19th century when Mauritius chapel, at the north side of the church was, redesigned and converted into Wakenitz's hereditary burial, and Agneskapelle (Agnes Chapel), which has fallen into disrepair as early as the 16th century, was demolished. Polychrome, that once covered church's walls is nearly all gone. Of most interesting things that can be found inside of the church are medieval baptismal font from 13th century, Gothic Pieta and tombstone of Johannes Klinckenberch from 15th century, Renaissance epitaphs of Klaus von Schwerin and Barbara von den Osten, beautiful Baroque pulpit, Buchholz organ from 1838 and portal from the same century. On day of our visit church was still renovated both inside and outside. The interior of the church was plunged by darkness, and the scaffolding standing here and there additionally obscured the view. Pity, but if not for renovation, many monuments would have fallen into ruin, so there's nothing to complain about.See more..
