    - A wall to be proud of

    Rostock City Wall image
Rostock is a pretty little walled town very easy to walk around. The wall has obviously been built up from what is left of the original fortifications, but it has be done in a respectful way so that you can see and appreciate what it would have looked like. We walked along the Main Street to the tower at the end and then turned left and back on ourselves into a park running along the edge of the old city walls. It was beautifully landscaped and was a great place to stroll and admire the old fortifications. We got a train to Rostock and it’s only a short walk from the station to the town, very easy to do. 3. 4.5 Mittelalterliche Wehranlage (75 reviews)
    - Wonderfully preserved city walls

    Mittelalterliche Wehranlage image
Neubrandenburg was comprehensively trashed by the advancing Russian forces in 1945, but miraculously the medieval city walls and several gates have survived both that experience and the Communist era. The walls and the immediately adjacent area are a delight (the rest of the city most definitely isn't!). The guard houses built into the walls at regular intervals are a particular delight. A pleasant walk with informative plaques in both German and English at regular intervals on significant structures or elements of the wall itself. See more..

    Fürstenhof image
While our cruise ship was berthed in the port of Rostock, we participated in a guided tour to the UNESCO listed town of Wismar. While being taken on a walking tour of the town, our tour guide led us past the Furstenhof as we were on our way to visit the St. Georgen Church. While the former small palace was not part of our tour as such, our tour guide did point out the building to us and briefly commented upon it. The most striking parts of the building were the beautifully detailed artwork and carvings on the building’s façade and the arched passageway visible from the front courtyard. Certainly worth a quick look by any tourist who happens to find themselves in this part of Wismar. See more..

  20. 4.5 Stargarder Tor (9 reviews)
    - Very interesting ensemble of buildings
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Observation Decks & Towers
    Stargarder Tor image
The Stargarder Tor is in fact a combination of two gates in the northern part of the old city wall of Neubrandenburg. It is at one end of the Street Stargarder Strasse; at the other end is the city’s train station. I haven’t been in that city for more than 30 years. So, it was interesting to visit it again. I didn’t know that the term Stargarder Tor contains more than just a single gate. Beside two gates it also includes a building that was a customs office and a wall across the street from that building. Additionally there were two mills beside the outer gate, from which one is still there. I recommend the Stargarder Tor to everyone who is interested in historic architecture. One should go there with an open mind and open eyes. See more..
  21. 4.5 Friedländer Tor (8 reviews)
    - The oldest city gate in Neubrandenburg.
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Observation Decks & Towers
    Friedländer Tor image
Following the circuit of the city fortifications, roughly, took us to the oldest and the best preserved city gate in Neubrandenburg. The Friedlander Tor, located to the north-east, is also the biggest of the four city gates. The gate was built in three stages. The oldest part of the Friedlander Tor, the main gate, was constructed around 1300. Around fifty years later, the outer gate was built, along with ring walls and custom and gatekeeper houses. Century later, the entire complex was completed with so called "Zingel", barbican like, three-storey, semi circular bastion, that was defending gate from the large calibre firearms. Connected with the rest of the complex by walls with small turret added next to the entrance, created 88 meters long defensive premise. Twenty five years later, the stair tower of the main gate was rebuilt. In the second half of 19th century, probably, turret and the kennel walls between bastion and outer gate were demolished, although, the outline of their foundations is still visible. Compared to the other gates, decorations of Friedlander Tor are simpler, not that lavish like in the case of other Neubrandenburg's gates. Still, we have in there all elements that Brick Gothic is famous of, just in the slightly cruder form. Plastered panels, pinnacles, pointed arches, gabled roofs. In other words, Early Brick Gothic in a pill. See more..

  23. 4.5 Das Arsenal am Pfaffenteich (8 reviews)
    - Not sure about the colour
    Historic Sites • Government Buildings
    Das Arsenal am Pfaffenteich image
When grand duke Paul Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Schwerin decided to transfer the ducal residence from Ludwigslust (don’t miss the palace there!) back to Schwerin he needed a new building to house his guards’ regiment, arsenal and military administration. So, he asked his court architect Georg Adolf Demmler to draw up some plans. This is what he came up with: a huge Tudor Revival style building with five sturdy towers crowned with corner turrets, crenulations all around, mullioned windows and a columned projected porch. Four years (1840-1844) and around six million bricks were needed to build it, under the supervision of Hermann Willebrand and Gottlieb Ruge, on the south-west bank of Lake Pfaffenteich. We thought the arsenal very much looked like a fairy-tale castle, especially when seen from over the water of the Pfaffenteich. Although one with a rather weird colour. Before the last restauration the building was white, but preservationists and architects have chosen an orange tint this time. We couldn’t find any reason for this choice, which takes some getting used to. The Arsenal now houses the Ministry of the Interior and Europe of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is not open to the public. 24. 3.5 Rathaus Malchow (7 reviews)
    - Worth a passing glance
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Government Buildings
    Rathaus Malchow image
The town hall on Alter Markt (‘Old Market’) was built in the early 19th century in a classicist style. The extension at the back dates from the late 1920s. Today the half-timbered building is painted in a sober grey, in keeping with its historic appearance. It’s interesting to have a look at the information panels (in German) showing pictures of how it looked around 1920 and 1940 when the traditional timber framing was accentuated by stark colour contrasts. While inspecting the back of the town hall, you may want to have a quick look at the 19th century red-brick former courthouse See more..

  29. 5.0 Treptower Tor (2 reviews)
    - The most representative city gate.
Tuesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Treptower Tor image
Treptower Tor was the last of the four city gates that we have seen that day. Built, depending on the sources, in the middle of 14th century, or around year 1400, The Treptow Gate was the most representative of four Neubrandenburg's city gates. Also, is the tallest one. The outer gate added in 15th century was, like in case other city gates complexes, connected with main gate by bailey walls. Timbered house built, in 18th century, into southern bailey wall, was the seat of tax collector and served as a shelter for gate guards. Originally, Treptower Tor was connected to Vierrademule (The Four-Wheeled Mill), located outside of the city walls, through the walls and bulwarks that no longer exist. Located on the west side of the city of Neubrandenburg, The Treptow Gate was even commemorated on the postage stamp. Architecture of the Treptower Tor encapsulate the finest elements of the Brick Gothic architecture, in my humble opinion. The admirer of late Medieval architecture can find all the features so characteristic to this very period of time there. Plastered panels, pointed arches, gabled roofs, rosettes, pinnacles and turrets. All this was erected on foundations constructed of fieldstones. A museum was established within the gate in 1873, the oldest museum in Mecklenburg-Strelitz region. Really nice place. See more..
  30. 3.5 Fangelturm (2 reviews)
    - Fangelturm - lofty Gothic tower.
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Fangelturm image
Just few steps away from Neubrandenburg's Regional Museum, Fangelturm, lofty, late Gothic defensive tower can be found. Built in the 15th century, Fangel Tower, also known as Monchenturm or Monk's Tower, was one of two defensive towers constructed in order to secure city from the north and south. Southern tower has collapsed in 1899, whereas northern one has survived, not without reconstructions, till now. Like in case of many similar structures before, Fangelturm, apart from being a good point for observing the foreground and resistance point in the city's defence system, was also used as a prison. Access to the dungeon was provided by so called "fear hole". Round opening about 70 centimetres in diameter through which convicts were lowered, and then supplied with food and water. "Fear hole" was also the only access of air and light. Tower, 25 meters high, could be accessed only by ladder. Current entrance was only created in 19th century, during reconstruction of the tower. The Neo-Gothic breakthrough next to the tower was made during the same reconstruction works. Unfortunately, the tower was closed for visitors. See more..
  31. 4.0 Die Stadtkirche (1 review)
    - Ungewöhnliches Altarbild
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals

  36. 3.0 Greifswalder Tor (1 review)
    - Greifswalder Tor - old city gate.
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Greifswalder Tor image
We found ourselves in Grimmen accidently, whilst our wandering around North Germany. This sleepy town, located to the south of Stralsund, and to the west of Greifswald, has this nice atmosphere, so typical for such a places where time seems to slow down in its pace. Driving through we'd spotted this characteristic silhouette with sloping roof, blind, pointed arch, windows and we immediately knew - "Aha! Red Brick Gothic is here." So it was. Greifswalder Tor is one of three old, medieval city gates that back then were part of city's fortifications system. Built between 1350 and 1400 Greifswald Gate is a good example of how small, not very rich towns tried to follow new trends in architecture. Nothing extravagant, nothing flamboyant, yet, just from one glance you can tell that's Brick Gothic. Simple, humble, one would even say stern, but it is still Brick Gothic, that was so popular in these areas of Europe that lacked stone and quarries. I know, I know, there's a lot of much more interesting places, full of amazing examples of finest architecture from the times when people didn't have to rush that badly, when life was simpler and food tasted better, but myself, I'm finding such a places like Grimmen, located off the beaten tracks, quite charming, having its own stories to say, its own small gems to show. So why not to discover them? See more..
