KdF - Koloss von Ruegen image
Well, this was an interesting place. The longest building complex in the world. It originally consisted of eight identical buildings and was 4.5 km (2.8 mi) in length parallel to the beach, with the surviving structures stretching 3.0 km (1.9 mi). And it was built by the Nazis between 1936 and 1939 as part of their "Strength through Joy" (Kraft durch Freude or KdF) project. Eerily weird. Some of the buildings have been turned into apartments and even a hotel. But others are still completely abandoned and in poor shape. One seems to have been taken over by bats and there is now concern about where the bats will live when these buildings are also turned into prime real estate. Fascinating history including the use of the buildings by both the Russian military and then the army of the former East Germany in later years. Oh, and the beach running parallel to all of this is superb. On our visit even the sun came out and the east wind dropped. Really glad that we came. See more..

Reminiscent of an English pier but much cleaner and newer. Just walk to the end, catch a boat there or stop in the excellent cafe . Ludwigslust Palace image
The palace is truly amazing. It is in a small town in the middle of nowhere and you would definitely not expect something like that to be there. You can visit the palace all year round. They offer a guided tour as well as an individual visit. The fee of 6.50 Euro for an adult was quite cheap. At the moment the east (or west?) wing is closed for renovation. You can take photos for free. There is a cloak room for your bags/backpacks (you would need a 1 or 2 Euro coin for the locker which you get back when leaving). The park behind the palace is huge and you can walk there for free (the ticket is just for inside the palace). At the moment the green grass is rather brown as there wasn't much rain this summer. Nevertheless a walk along the shady park ways is truly amazing. See more..

While our cruise ship was docked in the port of Rostock, we participated in a guided tour to the UNESCO listed town of Wismar. The first stop on our guided tour was in the Old Town market square. Here, our tour guide pointed out a number of structures of historical interest located around the market square. While there, the tour guide also gave the tour group a little bit of free time to stroll around the square. During this time we were able to take a close-up view of the Wismar Town Hall which by its large size dominates one end of the market square. The town hall’s façade has a vivid white colour scheme which contrasts nicely with its red tiled roof. The entrance portico supported by four rounded columns is a stylish feature of the symmetrically styled architecture of this impressive public building. Another “must-see” building for any tourist visiting Wismar! See more..

While our cruise ship was berthed in the port of Rostock, we participated in a guided tour to the UNESCO listed town of Wismar. While being taken on a walking tour of the town, our tour guide led us past the Furstenhof as we were on our way to visit the St. Georgen Church. While the former small palace was not part of our tour as such, our tour guide did point out the building to us and briefly commented upon it. The most striking parts of the building were the beautifully detailed artwork and carvings on the building’s façade and the arched passageway visible from the front courtyard. Certainly worth a quick look by any tourist who happens to find themselves in this part of Wismar. See more..

    St. Marienkirche Evangelical Church image
Finding a 250 year old church in this part of Germany that is close to 100% original is very difficult. But because Ueckermunde is off the beaten track and was not a major bombing target in the wars, the church remains intact. The front altar is beautiful and a great piece of woodwork. The painted ceiling is a highlight as are the verses on the upper walls. The church is open at times when there are volunteers to staff it and for special events. The church office phone number is listed above and you can try it ahead of time to see if arrangements can be made, If you are into church architecture and furnishings this is very, very interesting. Most churches only a few miles east are now converted to Polish Catholic and the original interior features have been changed to better reflect that religious group. My great grandfather was baptized here so I admit some bias but we have visited many religious sites in Germany and this one jumps out for it's originality and character. Excellent organ. See more..

    Rathaus Malchow image
The town hall on Alter Markt (‘Old Market’) was built in the early 19th century in a classicist style. The extension at the back dates from the late 1920s. Today the half-timbered building is painted in a sober grey, in keeping with its historic appearance. It’s interesting to have a look at the information panels (in German) showing pictures of how it looked around 1920 and 1940 when the traditional timber framing was accentuated by stark colour contrasts. While inspecting the back of the town hall, you may want to have a quick look at the 19th century red-brick former courthouse See more..

  22. 5.0 Treptower Tor (2 reviews)
    - The most representative city gate.

    Treptower Tor image
Treptower Tor was the last of the four city gates that we have seen that day. Built, depending on the sources, in the middle of 14th century, or around year 1400, The Treptow Gate was the most representative of four Neubrandenburg's city gates. Also, is the tallest one. The outer gate added in 15th century was, like in case other city gates complexes, connected with main gate by bailey walls. Timbered house built, in 18th century, into southern bailey wall, was the seat of tax collector and served as a shelter for gate guards. Originally, Treptower Tor was connected to Vierrademule (The Four-Wheeled Mill), located outside of the city walls, through the walls and bulwarks that no longer exist. Located on the west side of the city of Neubrandenburg, The Treptow Gate was even commemorated on the postage stamp. Architecture of the Treptower Tor encapsulate the finest elements of the Brick Gothic architecture, in my humble opinion. The admirer of late Medieval architecture can find all the features so characteristic to this very period of time there. Plastered panels, pointed arches, gabled roofs, rosettes, pinnacles and turrets. All this was erected on foundations constructed of fieldstones. A museum was established within the gate in 1873, the oldest museum in Mecklenburg-Strelitz region. Really nice place. See more..

    - Neues Tor - the youngest city gate.
Tuesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Neues Tor image
Neues Tor - The New Gate is the youngest of the four Neubrandenburg's city gates. Built after 1450 in the eastern section of the city walls in order to relieve the main traffic route through the town, Neues Tor can be found at the intersection of Neutorstrasse and 4.Ringstrasse streets. Of the entire The New Gate system only main gate has survived to our days. Unfinished kennel walls, that was connecting main gate with the front gate, was destroyed during Thirty Years' War. Never repaired, decrepit kennel, or so called ring walls were dismantled, along with outer gate, in 1852. Difficult years of WW2 have spared The New Gate. The bombing of the city in April 1945 left Neues Tor, and the rest of the old city fortification system relatively untouched. Today we can adore fine architecture of the late Brick Gothic enchanted in the walls of The New Gate. Plastered panels, gables, rosettes and eight life-sizes figures of baked clay that enriching gate's façade from the town's side. Worth seeing. See more..

    Fangelturm image
Just few steps away from Neubrandenburg's Regional Museum, Fangelturm, lofty, late Gothic defensive tower can be found. Built in the 15th century, Fangel Tower, also known as Monchenturm or Monk's Tower, was one of two defensive towers constructed in order to secure city from the north and south. Southern tower has collapsed in 1899, whereas northern one has survived, not without reconstructions, till now. Like in case of many similar structures before, Fangelturm, apart from being a good point for observing the foreground and resistance point in the city's defence system, was also used as a prison. Access to the dungeon was provided by so called "fear hole". Round opening about 70 centimetres in diameter through which convicts were lowered, and then supplied with food and water. "Fear hole" was also the only access of air and light. Tower, 25 meters high, could be accessed only by ladder. Current entrance was only created in 19th century, during reconstruction of the tower. The Neo-Gothic breakthrough next to the tower was made during the same reconstruction works. Unfortunately, the tower was closed for visitors. See more..
  25. 4.0 Dorfkirche Abtshagen (1 review)
    - Parochial Church in Abtshagen

    Dorfkirche Abtshagen image
Abtshagen, is small village in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern province in north-east Germany located halfway between Grimmen and Stralsund. Cut in half by road number 194 leading to the north, village is hiding within its precinct a small gem, namely, Gothic Parochial Church dedicated to Holy Spirit (Heilgeistkirche = Holy Spirit's Church). Surrounded by small cemetery, and well visible from the road that is just passing by, red-brick church was completed in 1380. Massive, brick tower, that was planned to built; which is indicated by remnants of the wall; has never been finished. Instead of it, wooden bell tower was added to the structure of the church in 1667. However, original tower has not survived as it's been destroyed by arson in 1999 and then, rebuilt in year 2000. Church's simple, neo-gothic, interior is well preserved. Within his walls, bearing remains of old Medieval and Baroque paintings, medieval baptismal font can be found, and one of the very few preserved organs made by Carl August Buchholz, famous organ builder from Berlin. A simple 18th century epitaph of pastor Martin Partenius can also be seen in church. Renaissance preacher's stall, that is still there, was made around 1650. Original, Gothic, altar piece was replaced by Renaissance one, which is no longer there. I had a chance to look around church's interior thanks to the courtesy of the verger, who spotted me wandering around the church with photo camera and opened it for me. We had a little chat, and I'd learned some historical facts about the church from him. That was very kind of him. What a charming place, with serene atmosphere. Definitely worth stopping there. 26. 4.0 Muhlentor (1 review)
    - Muhlentor - Mill Gate.
Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Muhlentor image
Muhlentor, or the Mill Gate, is another example of Medieval Brick Gothic architecture that can be found in Grimmen. Formerly it's been known as Tribseer Tor (Tribseer Gate), name taken from the road leading to the town of Tribsees. Four-storey city gate, built in 1320-25 on base of field stones, is located to the west of Grimmen's Town Hall and just a little walk from it. Muhlentor was a part of city fortifications surrounding Gimmen since Medieval times. Fine plastered panels, so characteristic of Brick Gothic architecture, were added around year 1460. Two protruding rock blocks, that can be seen from the western side of the gate, were presumably used to fasten drawbridge. Faded dates of 1776 and 1876, that are still visible on the gate's façade, probably commemorates earlier repairs to the structure of the steep gable roof after a lightning strike. Gate's roof is additionally decorated with stepped gables, also, very characteristic motif of Gothic architecture. Within pointed arch gate opening with a barrel vault can be found remains of old wooden gate. Current name of the city gate comes from the mill that once stood nearby. Directly adjacent to the city gate is Museum "Im Muhlentor" Grimmen but it was temporarily closed. I have to admit that Mill Gate panels looked eerily and threatening in cloudy weather. Amazing effect. See more..

    Die Marienkirche In Grimmen image
Built around 1267, Church of Saint Mary is the oldest building in town. Austere, red brick building surrounded by trees is located to the north-west of small, old market square. Original, three-nave hall church, built on base made of field stones with walls supported by small buttresses, undergone throughout the centuries, some modifications. In 15th century the brick vaulted hall choir was added, and in 1436 Duke of Pomerania, Branim VIII founded chapel named after him the "Branim Chapel". Around the same time square tower was built on the west side of the church, and on the north side of it, two chapels, Agnes and Mauritius, were constructed. At the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries apse closing church's presbytery was added. Last modification to church's silhouette took a place in 19th century when Mauritius chapel, at the north side of the church was, redesigned and converted into Wakenitz's hereditary burial, and Agneskapelle (Agnes Chapel), which has fallen into disrepair as early as the 16th century, was demolished. Polychrome, that once covered church's walls is nearly all gone. Of most interesting things that can be found inside of the church are medieval baptismal font from 13th century, Gothic Pieta and tombstone of Johannes Klinckenberch from 15th century, Renaissance epitaphs of Klaus von Schwerin and Barbara von den Osten, beautiful Baroque pulpit, Buchholz organ from 1838 and portal from the same century. On day of our visit church was still renovated both inside and outside. The interior of the church was plunged by darkness, and the scaffolding standing here and there additionally obscured the view. Pity, but if not for renovation, many monuments would have fallen into ruin, so there's nothing to complain about. See more..
  29. 3.0 Rathaus Grimmen (1 review)
    - Grimmen - medieval town hall.
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Government Buildings
    Rathaus Grimmen image
Grimmen's Rathause is a small edifice built around year 1400 in Brick Gothic Style. Much more modest in terms of size and number of decorative elements compared to its better known counterparts, still, it's an interesting monument from the past, when life was simpler, yet no less exciting than now. This two-storey brick building with steep pitched roof was erected on rectangular plan. The ground floor was used by merchants and traders and for jurisdiction purposes, while in the hall on the upper floor citizens and councillors held their meetings. Characteristic Gothic façade has 7-axis pillar gable, slim plastered double panels and arcades below. The whole thing is topped with Baroque roof turret in form of open lantern with curved roof, that replaced earlier one, destroyed by the lightning strike in 1744. Opposite the town hall there's small cafeteria and take away where one can sit down for a while, sip a coffee and enjoy quiet, and a bit sleepy atmosphere of Grimmen's market. See more..

    Greifswalder Tor image
We found ourselves in Grimmen accidently, whilst our wandering around North Germany. This sleepy town, located to the south of Stralsund, and to the west of Greifswald, has this nice atmosphere, so typical for such a places where time seems to slow down in its pace. Driving through we'd spotted this characteristic silhouette with sloping roof, blind, pointed arch, windows and we immediately knew - "Aha! Red Brick Gothic is here." So it was. Greifswalder Tor is one of three old, medieval city gates that back then were part of city's fortifications system. Built between 1350 and 1400 Greifswald Gate is a good example of how small, not very rich towns tried to follow new trends in architecture. Nothing extravagant, nothing flamboyant, yet, just from one glance you can tell that's Brick Gothic. Simple, humble, one would even say stern, but it is still Brick Gothic, that was so popular in these areas of Europe that lacked stone and quarries. I know, I know, there's a lot of much more interesting places, full of amazing examples of finest architecture from the times when people didn't have to rush that badly, when life was simpler and food tasted better, but myself, I'm finding such a places like Grimmen, located off the beaten tracks, quite charming, having its own stories to say, its own small gems to show. So why not to discover them? See more..

Points of Interest & Landmarks • Historic Walking Areas • Architectural Buildings
    Wiekhaus image
Wiekhaus also known as a Wikhaus, Wieke, Wiechhaus or Weichhaus is very characteristic element of fortification system that use to be popular in northeast Germany (Mecklenburg, Brandenburg, Pomerania) and Lower Rhine, in Medieval times. It can be described as rectangular tower built into city's defensive walls, open from the city side, with the other three sides reinforced. They were used as observation posts, defensive towers and as guard posts. Built in more or less regular intervals, they contributed to stability and reinforcement of city fortification system. After Thirty Years' War, in 17th century, most of them were rebuilt into half-timbered houses and converted into living spaces for the poorer strata of urban denizens, leaving structure of old medieval city walls intact. In the past, Neubrandenburg could boast of 56 of such a houses, of which only 25 remained. Many of these "second generation" Wiekhauses increasingly fell out of use, and then fell into disrepair and were demolished in the course of 19th century. Those which survived were gradually restored starting from the 70' of the last century, however, not without intervention into their shape and size. Wiekhauses can be found all along Neubrandenburg's city walls perimeter, although, most of them is clustered in northern and western stretches of city walls creating truly picturesque effect. Nowadays few of them were turned into restaurants. We had a really nice walk along old city fortifications. Actually, entire old town area is surrounded by city walls and park created in the place of old moat and ramparts that dividing it from the "modern" Neubrandenburg. Cool place. See more..
