    After leaving the castle, continue across the bridge to the south in order to see the statue of Friedrich Franz II and the surrounding gardens. You will be glad you did. He was the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin until his death in 1883 and was an officer in the Prussian army during the Second Schleswig War, the Austro-Prussian War, and the Franco-Prussian War.     I glanced at this statue, in the beautiful market square, without really seeing it the first time we passed it on the way to the cathedral nearby. Luckily I looked more closely when passing a second time. What a hoot! One facet of the base shows two long rows of citizens of Schwerin--male and female--mooning a "person of note" [rebelled against Duke Henry] as he rides horseback out of town, his horse's rear just one more element in the mocking display.     This tiny bridge is on the way from the street Schweinsbrücke to the Nicolai church and as you are stunned by the sheer size of the church in this little town, you tend to overlook the little bridge. What a mistake: You will find 4 little bronze pigs in different poses, and the secret is to touch their belly. It will bring you lifetime luck - and believe me, it works. I have been so lucky ever since.... A little marvel not to miss when in Wismar. My kids loved it and there is a magnificant cafe just 50 metres up the road. See more..

    Während eines abendlichen Spazierganges besucht. Die Verbrechen und Unglücke während der Zeit der Naziherrschaft dürfen nicht in Vergessenheit geraten. Leider gehört auch dieses Ereignis mit dazu und an der kleinen Gedenkstätte wird diese Episode sehr gut dargestellt. Ich denke, es ist ein Muss, dort einen Moment inne zu halten und der Opfer zu gedenken. See more..

    Da die St.-Marien-Kirche im 2. Weltkreig zerstört und zu DDR-Zeiten bis auf den Kirchturm abgerissen wurde, wurden als Mahnmal die Umrisse der Kirche mit kleinen Mauern nachgebaut. Uns gefiel diese Darstellung sehr gut, da es einen Eindruck der früheren Größe gibt und gleichzeitig zum Nachdenken anregt. See more..
