    - The Essence of the German Romantic Sensibility
    Ancient Ruins
    Klosterruine Eldena image
If you are a fan of the German Romantic movement in art, poetry, music and gothic novels then the ruined monastery at Eldena will feel like a hauntingly familiar place. Best viewed by moonlight at the back end of the year, when the information boards and neatly mowed lawns dissolve into the shadows, and the coach-loads of tourists have gone home. But also delightful on a sunny day with a picnic spread and the kids running around the ruins playing mediaeval soldiers. See more..

    - Muhlentor - Mill Gate.

    Muhlentor image
Muhlentor, or the Mill Gate, is another example of Medieval Brick Gothic architecture that can be found in Grimmen. Formerly it's been known as Tribseer Tor (Tribseer Gate), name taken from the road leading to the town of Tribsees. Four-storey city gate, built in 1320-25 on base of field stones, is located to the west of Grimmen's Town Hall and just a little walk from it. Muhlentor was a part of city fortifications surrounding Gimmen since Medieval times. Fine plastered panels, so characteristic of Brick Gothic architecture, were added around year 1460. Two protruding rock blocks, that can be seen from the western side of the gate, were presumably used to fasten drawbridge. Faded dates of 1776 and 1876, that are still visible on the gate's façade, probably commemorates earlier repairs to the structure of the steep gable roof after a lightning strike. Gate's roof is additionally decorated with stepped gables, also, very characteristic motif of Gothic architecture. Within pointed arch gate opening with a barrel vault can be found remains of old wooden gate. Current name of the city gate comes from the mill that once stood nearby. Directly adjacent to the city gate is Museum "Im Muhlentor" Grimmen but it was temporarily closed. I have to admit that Mill Gate panels looked eerily and threatening in cloudy weather. Amazing effect. See more..
